When Mozart was born, Europe was dominated by wealthy and powerful monarchies, with their kings and aristocrats. What we call 'Classical Music' emerged in the royal courts of these kingdoms. Louis XIV of France, with his great court in Versailles, set the standard in the 17th century, By the 18th Century many other kings had imitated him. The great musicians of this period were employed by kings and aristocrats and composed and performed for a court audience who saw their culture as superior to that of ordinary people.
