Art Buchwald describes his experiences as a hospice patient.On February 7, 2006, Mr. Buchwald checked into a Washington, DC hospice. He refused dialysis treatments for his failing kidneys and expected to live only three weeks. However, he survived and after five months left for his home in Martha's Vineyard. His book Too Soon to Say Goodbye - published November 7, 2006 - explores how people deal with illness and death. The book includes eulogies by Tom Brokaw, Ben Bradlee, and Mike Wallace. Mr. Buchwald died January 17th, 2007 at age 81.
Art Buchwald is the author of 33 books, including Beating Around the Bush and I'll Always Have Paris: A Memoir. He became a syndicated columnist after serving in World War II and attending the University of Southern California. He received the Pulitzer Prize for outstanding commentary in 1982 and was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Letters in 1986.
