I just spent 30 fun minutes learning a few basic sentences in Russian. I find the Pimsleur approach clear and useful. The tactic of making you repeat a word in pieces, backwards, may seem puzzling, but I found it helps you isolate the sounds better for understanding and it creates an unusual pattern that probably promotes learning as your mind works to put the word together again in its proper order and backwards.

However did someone come out with the brilliant scheme
of learning words backward first. What a wonderful way to confuse and to scramble the brain's natural learning patterns.. I tried several first lessons in various languages and all do this. Of course, I did not bother going further.
