Meet the Poet: Nikki Giovanni

Meet the Poet: Nikki Giovanni

by Nikki Giovanni

Nikki Giovanni, University Distinguished Professor of English and Gloria D. Smith Professor of Black Studies at Virginia Tech, reads and discusses excerpts from her latest of 27 books, Quilting the Black-Eyed Pea: Poems and Not Quite Poems.

Along with Madhubuti, Sonia Sanchez, and Etheridge Knight, she formed the 'Broadside Quartet' of young poets in Greenwich Village, introduced and promoted by Dudley Randall, founder of Broadside Publishing. In her first two collections, Black Feeling, Black Talk (1968) and Black Judgement (1969), Giovanni reflects on the African-American identity. Recently, she has published Quilting the Black-Eyed Pea: Poems and Not-Quite Poems (William Morrow & Co., 2002) Blues For All the Changes: New Poems (1999), Love Poems (1997) and Selected Poems of Nikki Giovanni (1996). Her honors include the NAACP Image Award for Literature in 1998, and the Langston Hughes Award for Distinguished Contributions to Arts and Letters in 1996. Several magazines have named Giovanni Woman of the Year, including Essence, Mademoiselle, and Ladies Home Journal.

LearnOutLoud.com Review:

 Nikki Giovanni Reads Some Poems
Nikki Giovanni has been publishing works of poetry in America for over 30 years. In this talk from the Harvard Graduate School of Education, she tells many stories from her life and reads from her 2002 collection of poetry Quilting the Black-Eyed Pea: Poems and Not Quite Poems. Giovanni is candid and full of humor as she tells about how Mars astronauts can learn from African slavery, how Rosa Parks actively stood up against the murder of Emmett Till when she refused to move from her bus seat, and how one should confront prejudice in contemporary society. This talk can be heard on streaming audio and video from the WGBH Forum Network.

...which is one reason she wrote an ode to Feet in O magazine.
Nikki G describes herself often as a forward thinking person. She does not wait for you to catch up! She also knows many try very hard not to do so. I've loved her "stories" since I first heard her on the then uptown campus of NYU in 1968. Her steel is the veneer over her very loving heart. So embrace her strength, her clarity and take it on because we need it!--starami8
