Isaac Bashevis Singer - 1978 Nobel Lecture

Isaac Bashevis Singer - 1978 Nobel Lecture

by Isaac Bashevis Singer

"I am not ashamed to admit that I belong to those who fantasize that literature is capable of bringing new horizons and new perspectives - philosophical, religious, aesthetical and even social. In the history of old Jewish literature there was never any basic difference between the poet and the prophet. Our ancient poetry often became law and a way of life."

-Isaac Bashevis Singer

This speech was delivered December 8, 1978.

Write a Review of Isaac Bashevis Singer - 1978 Nobel Lecture

This podcast is the speech given by Isaac Bashevis Singer when he received the Nobel Prize in literature in 1978. Singer says that he’ll speak a little in Yiddish, as it would be the first time anyone has done so in this hall, and then speak the appropriate translation in English. He then goes on to speak in Yiddish, followed by English.

He talks of how a poet must be an entertainer in its full sense, how the modern literature writer must be concerned with the problems in today’s world, the power of religion, the belief in revelation. He then goes on to say how there is no technological achievement that can mitigate the problems of modern mankind.

This is an interesting speech, clear to understand. The audio quality is good considering that it was recorded in a hall in 1978. I recommend this speech to all lovers of literature.
