Existentialism in Literature and Film

Existentialism in Literature and Film

webcast.berkeley Course - Phil 7

by Hubert L. Dreyfus

The course will be organized around various attempts to reinterpret the Judeo/Christian God, and to determine in what sense, if at all, such a God is still a living God. We will study Dostoyevsky's and Kierkegaard's attempts to preserve a non-theological version of the God of Christianity, as well as Nietzche's attempt to save us from belief in any version of God offered by our tradition. We will view and discuss three films that deal with related issues.

LearnOutLoud.com Review:

 Roots of Existentialism
The "Existentialism in Literature and Film" course, taught by professor Hubert L. Dreyfus, cuts right to the roots of existentialist thought, looking at the works of Kierkegaard and Nietzsche, and examining Dostoyevsky''s Brothers Karamazov in depth. It''s an excellent philosophy course and it''s free!

Wonderful job, July 19, 2010

I didn't listen to every single download in this course because I was already familiar with some of the subject matter. I was a philosophy major in college (but this was some years ago).

I would just say that Prof. Dreyfus does a masterful job with the course. He does not assert his personal opinions, and he pays close attention to the texts.

One point of interest. There is another connection between Nietzsche and Dostoevsky and "The Brothers". There is a scene of animal cruelty (horse beating I think) in The Brothers. I'm pretty sure it's in there. Dosteovsky was against any kind of cruelty in my opinion. Nietzsche went mad upon seeing a horse being beaten, so the Superman did have a heart, even if he couldn't tolerate his own "weakness".

I mark this course "highly recommended".

Life changing!, August 15, 2009

Ever feel like life needs a little more meaning? Well then listen to these guys' perspectives and solutions to make sense of this craziness in life. The lecturer is super-accessible, and clear, and sometimes even funny. I'm 22, studied biology, never taken a philosophy class and never heard of Kierkegaard, and all his talk is understandable even to me.

This class builds a framework for which we can understand our own existence and what we can do with the time we got here, from the perspectives of three philosophers. Truly, it gave me three new ways to think about the meaning of life, and I now follow a bit of each. You can download all the lectures in one batch through itunes U, and be sure to get the handouts he references here: http://socrates.berkeley.edu/~hdreyfus/7-s08/html/Handouts.html
And the last movie, Breathless, is available free on Google Video.

NEW VERSION: a more recent version of the podcast, from the 2008 class, is available for free on itunes U, through the itunes store.
