Though a military hero, Andrew Jackson had a checkered reputation. When he ran for president an elderly woman from his home village said, "When he was here he was such a rake that my husband would not bring him into the house.... If Andrew Jackson can be president, anyone can!" University of Texas history professor H. W. Brands examines the career of the man who won the popular vote for president in 1824 only to lose the election to John Quincy Adams, sparking electoral reforms that helped him win the 1828 election by a large margin. A book signing will follow the Forum.

Great Lecture from Historian H.W. Brands, August 10, 2006
Reviewer: LOLDavid from Los Angeles, California

In this lecture from the Miller Center of Public Affairs, H.W. Brands lectures on his latest book "Andrew Jackson: His Life and Times". Professor Brands focuses on the way that American public opinion regarding Andrew Jackson has changed since Jackson was thought of as "the hero" of his day to his demonization in contemporary America for his policies such as Indian removal. Brands probes deeper into the character of Jackson, pointing out his admirable qualities and crediting Jackson for twice saving the Union.
