I've Been to the Mountaintop

I've Been to the Mountaintop

by Martin Luther King, Jr.

"And then I got into Memphis. And some began to say the threats, or talk about the threats that were out. What would happen to me from some of our sick white brothers?

Well, I don't know what will happen now. We've got some difficult days ahead. But it really doesn't matter with me now, because I've been to the mountaintop.

Like anybody, I would like to live a long life. Longevity has its place. But I'm not concerned about that now. I just want to do God's will. And He's allowed me to go up to the mountain. And I've looked over. And I've seen the Promised Land. I may not get there with you. But I want you to know tonight, that we, as a people, will get to the promised land!

And so I'm happy, tonight. I'm not worried about anything. I'm not fearing any man! Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord!!"

-Martin Luther King Jr.

This speech was delivered 3 April 1968 in Memphis, Tennessee.

LearnOutLoud.com Review:

 An Amazing Final Speech
On April 4th, 1968, Martin Luther King, Jr. was assassinated in Memphis, Tennessee. The night before he was assassinated Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his prophetic "I''ve Been to the Mountaintop" speech.

In this stirring speech Dr. King looks back on his life and is thankful for all the positive changes in civil rights that occurred in his lifetime, and he is grateful to have lived in the second half of the 20th century when masses of people all over the world were standing up for freedom and human rights. Important Speech of Peace, January 15, 2007
Reviewer: dmoscaluk

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was not even scheduled to speak this night, but graciously did so when the citizens present demanded it. I am a Social Studies teacher and played this speech to my classes; all were stunned at how prophetic it was, even before they were told it was the speech was the last he gave, and given the night before his assasination. This is a powerful, spirit-led (in my opinion) seed of hope which deserves some fresh air and sunshine today. This speech built empathy among my white students, and it softened the hard edges of my black students. We must remember, and must pass on to our youth, that PEACE is what this great man gave his life for, not for blacks to beat out the whites. Please let every youth you know, regardless of color, be exposed to this lesser-known speech of this great man.
