Tissue Engineering

Tissue Engineering

The Challenges of Imitating Nature

by Gordana Vunjak-Novakovic

Imagine a world where we could engineer living tissues to cure a disease, heal an injury, or fix a broken heart. Tissue engineering combines the principles of biology, engineering and medicine to create biological substitutes of native tissues. Can we use engineered tissue to better understand our own bodies? What are the promises of this new technology? What are the roadblocks and controversies?

This project is supported by a Science Education Partnership Award (SEPA) from the National Center for Research Resources, National Institutes of Health. It does not necessarily represent the official views of NCRR or NIH.

Write a Review of Tissue Engineering

Reviewer: girijad83 from India

This is another informative podcast by an MIT research professor. Gordana’s research focuses on the functional cardiac and skeletal tissues. She has a highly commendable academic experience, having written over 150 periodic articles and with a book in progress. She teaches chemical, biological, and tissue engineering at MIT and, if I got the slightly unclear introducer right, also at Texas University. She is also a member of 30 scientific panels, has written reviews for the NIH, and also co-directs the only tissue engineering resource of its kind funded by NIH.

Gordana starts out by explaining the need for researching in tissue engineering. She explains that tissue engineering is needed because tissue reconstruction is necessary in cases of congenital abnormalities or severe injuries, transplantation is necessary in case of terminal diseases, and it also helps us understand how the body works, and how drugs and therapies may work. She tells that this field is limited by the shortage of donor organs. She then goes on to give a detailed, step-by-step explanation of how tissues in organs are formed, starting with a single cell structure.

The audio quality of the podcast can be improved a bit more, and that is the sole reason this podcast not getting 5 stars.
