President George W. Bush at the NAACP

President George W. Bush at the NAACP

by George W. Bush

President Bush addresses the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People's (NAACP) national convention for the first time since he took office in January of 2001. He discusses his commitment to civil rights, education and the renewal of the 1965 Voting Rights Act - emphasizing his dedication in creating a more united nation. Bruce S. Gordon, President and Chief Executive Officer of the NAACP introduces the President.

The NAACP was founded February 12 and is one of the oldest and most influential civil rights organizations in the United States. The organization has had sufficient influence in black America to draw every president after Harding to its conventions.

George W. Bush is the 43rd President of the United States. He was sworn into office on January 20, 2001, re-elected on November 2, 2004, and sworn in for a second term on January 20, 2005. Prior to his Presidency, President Bush served for 6 years as the 46th Governor of the State of Texas.
