Autobiographical Podcast

Today we focus on how my speech challenges brought me to the counseling field. Perhaps it seems odd to think that a person like me would want to go into a field where you talk for a living when I have a speech impediment. On the surface it might not make sense, however, it’s a great example of my philosophy of counseling; it also gives you an idea of who I am personally, not just as a professional counselor. Although I want to be cautious about talking too much about myself, people legitimately want to know about a therapist or teacher’s personally, which helps to determine if there is an appropriate match of values so that the process leads to growth and not conflict. By the end, you’ll have a better idea about what I bring to therapeutic relationships, how my personal tensions inform my practice instead of distract from it, and what might motivate me to do this work. There are certainly other elements that pulled me toward counseling - - perhaps I’ll explore those at a later time . . . :)
