LearnOutLoud.com Review
Watch this moving and disturbing portrait of Internet activist Aaron Swartz, who after founding Reddit, became a progressive advocate for free speech on the Internet which eventually led to intense investigation from the U.S. federal government that contributed to Swartz’s taking his own life at the age of 26. Prominent Internet voices such as Lawrence Lessig, Cory Doctorow, and World Wide Web inventor Tim Berners-Lee chime in with their admiration for Aaron Swartz and the contributions he made. After leaving the start-up world, Swartz became active in disclosing legal documents that were behind pay walls and he came under FBI investigation for downloading academic journals while at MIT. Swartz’s role in helping defeat the Stop Online Piracy Act in 2012 is covered in the film. After that the U.S. federal government wanted to make an example of Swartz for other “hacktivists” around the world, and he was charged with 13 felonies for downloading academic journals. After years of investigation and facing 35 years in prison, Swartz took his own life in 2013. The film paints a disturbing portrait of the FBI and the U.S. criminal justice system as they attempt to intimidate and prosecute Internet hacktivists in this new age of information.
