Mother's Day for Peace: A Dramatic Reading of Julia Ward Howe's Mother's Day Proclamation

Mother’s Day was yesterday here in the United States so we thought we'd feature Julia Ward Howe's Mother's Day Proclamation which she wrote in 1870 as part of her effort to establish a Mother's Day for Peace in the wake of the American Civil War. The Mother's Day tradition continued into the 20th century and in 1914 President Woodrow Wilson declared the first national Mother's Day, as a day for American citizens to show the flag in honor of those mothers whose sons had died in war. This audio/video version of the Mother's Day Proclamation features actors and activists reading portions of the proclamation. It is available on MP3 download and streaming audio & video from Democracy Now.

The Way of Peace

Franciscan priest and founder of the Center of Action and Contemplation, Richard Rohr, OJM was the quest speaker at the 2004 Way of Peace talks. He speaks clearly and bluntly of Christian religion's role in the peace process. "Do we use Jesus to justify violence?" "The most clever way to avoid following a teacher is to worship him." an animated and thoughtful speaker, Rohr admonishes us to seek rather than avoid internal transformation - in prayer, in contemplation, in meditation, in silence and in action.

Joyce Meyer is an American author and one of the world's most important Bible practitioners. She was born in St. Louis, Missouri in 1943 where she had a rough childhood living with her parents. At age 18, as soon as she graduated, Joyce married a part-time car salesman who was unfaithful to her and manipulated her into stealing from her employer. She ended the marriage five years later and married her current husband, Dave Meyer in 1967. A spiritual event in 1976 changed her life significantly and she started teaching Bible classes. She also hosted a radio show as she got involved in Life Christian Faith. Some years later, Joyce established her own ministry called Life in the Word. She has written over 70 books on practical Christianity and how to overcome emotional battles. She has also earned a PhD in theology from the Life Christian University in Tampa, Florida. Her speaking and writing style is practical, down to earth, and filled with humor. Some of her best-selling books include Battlefield of the Mind, How to Hear from God, I Dare You: Embrace Life with Passion, Approval Addiction, and more.

We Recommend:

Joyce Meyer's top selling book is Battlefield of the Mind which has sold over 3 million copies worldwide. Throughout the book, Meyer helps readers change their lives by changing their minds. Battlefield of the Mind is available on MP3 download and Audio CD. Another good read we have for download How to Hear from God in which Meyer helps readers recognize the voice of God. A book that explores the modern obsession with the approval of others that people tend to have is Approval Addiction, which is available on audio download as well. The book describes this habit and offers ways to deal with it. Also you'll want to check out Joyce Meyer's numerous free podcasts that we feature on our site.
