Pack of Lies Web Extra: The Shortwave Spy Numbers Stations
Fri, Nov 13, 2009
Pack of Lies Web Extra: Shortwave "Numbers" Stations Genre: Radio Tags: betrayal, Cold War, Communism, espionage, shortwave, spies Download : MP3 Audio
Martin Jarvis's character, Mr. Stewart, is one of the few fictional characters in a spy story filled with real-life detail. Hugh Whitemore based his play "Pack of Lies" on the Portland Spy Ring of 1960 and 1961. The Krogers did, in fact, live at 45 Cranley Drive in Ruislip, and were frequently visited by the real-life Gordon Lonsdale, as he passed on information to be transmitted in secret from their house.
But how did these transmissions work? How was the information kept secret? And what did it sound like? We got some answers from radio producer David Goren, who guides us through the sinister underground world of the shortwave "numbers stations".
"Atencion: Seis Siete Tres Siete Cero: The Shortwave Numbers Mystery" was written and mixed by David Goren for The Lost and Found Sound Series produced by the Kitchen Sisters and Jay Allison. More information at http://www.thekitchensisters.org.
The recordings of the numbers stations came from the collections of Simon Mason, Chris Smolinski, Tom Sevart, Don Mussel, David Goren, and The Conet Project produced by Akin Fernandez for Irdial Discs.
The Havana Moon interview originally aired in 1992 on Radio Netherlands' Media Network program, hosted by Jonathan Marks. Simon Mason provided the recording of the interview.
David Goren is an independent radio producer who continues to explore the sonic, aesthetic, and cultural resonances of the shortwave radio spectrum at shortwaveology.com.

The "hungry ghosts" of Vietnam are a very real part of the country's traditions and folklore. Each year, they are honored in a festival known as Vu Lan, or the Amnesty of Unquiet Spirits, in which the hungry ghosts are fed, and prayers are offered for their salvation. But when American forces arrived in Vietnam in the 1960s, they saw the Vu Lan tradition as the perfect tool of psychological warfare. We invited psychological operations expert Herbert A. Friedman to tell us more about "Operation Wandering Soul."
