KCRW's Final Curtain Podcast

KCRW's Final Curtain Podcast

by Forrest Murray

Interesting people die every day -- some we've heard of, some we haven't. And every newspaper has an obituary page to chronicle these passings. There's been nothing like the Obit Page on radio or TV -- until now.

KCRW (89.9 FM and KCRW.com) launches what's believed to be a broadcast first: Final Curtain, a monthly half-hour obituary program. It will air the first Tuesday of every month.

Produced and hosted by Perri Chasin and Forrest Murray, Final Curtain will focus on the one thing that unites all living beings -- our demise.

Final Curtain will, of course, deal with people of fame, infamy and notoriety. But it will also feature lesser-knowns whose stories are no less interesting. And it will examine the traditions of death in different cultures.

KCRW's Final Curtain Podcast by Forrest Murray is an interesting and innovative production by KCRW Santa Monica and kcrw.com. It is the audio equivalent of the Obituary Page in newspapers, and features obituaries of not only famous but also lesser-known people.

This particular podcast features the obituaries of Dale Velzy, the master surfboard shaper; Henry Corden, the premier bender at the Yankee Stadium; Emanuel Gluck, the actor who was the voice of Fred Flintstone, and Paul Keene, the man who launched the american organic foods movement.

The obituaries tell the listener about the life and achievements of these people in an in-depth manner. For example, in the obituary of Dale Velzy, there are inputs by Steve Thelsman, publisher of Surfer's Journal, who talks about Velzy's life and his contribution to the popularity of surfing. There are also recollections about Velzy by some customers.

The audio quality is excellent and the narration by Forrest Murray and Perri Chasin impeccable. I highly recommend this podcast to all those who would like to know about interesting but lesser-known people and their contributions to their particular field.

I rate this podcast a 4.5.
