Do You Talk Funny?

Thu, Apr 28, 2016

Welcome! My guest today is David Nihill, the author of Do You Talk Funny? When I read his book, I absolutely could not put it down! David used to be terrified of public speaking, but he conquered his own fears and launched into the field of stand-up comedy. He now teaches others to do the same. The premise of his book is that comedians are the ultimate public speaking masters and we can learn from them.

  • What prompted you to take up the challenge of improvisation?

It started with a friend’s spinal cord injury, and I ended up hosting a comedy show fundraiser. I feel that I was dragged kicking and screaming into the world of public speaking as a stand-up comic. I committed to a full year but then decided to keep going.

  • What was it that stood out to you in applying comedy to public speaking or everyday conversations?

Storytelling is the key, and it’s what stand-up comics do best. They learn to tell stories about themselves that are short, effective, with key pieces of information. Most comics keep a “fun story file” with key bullet points on their phones. Don’t lead any conversation with the “linked-in bio” because that’s just not engaging conversation in any way.

  • Does having world experiences lend to your content in writing jokes?

Yes! You can connect with people immediately and open up conversations based on shared experiences of living or visiting the same places in the world. People immediately identify with you if they have a shared experience. It’s very hard to get people to laugh unless they connect with you.

  • How do you memorize the needed information in your speeches?

I don’t recommend trying to memorize them word for word. That brings too much stress and sounds robotic and rehearsed. It’s hard to be engaging when you are reciting. Remember that good content trumps everything else. I memorize the first 30 seconds with key bullet points and the conclusion; you should always leave room to play around in the middle! I recommend the “Memory Palace” technique which is outlined nicely in the book Moonwalking with Einstein, by Joshua Foer.

  • What is it about being funny that makes it so memorable for your audience?

The most powerful thing you say will be right after something funny because THAT is what your audience will remember. Humor grabs attention, breaks down barriers, creates human connection, and invites favorable reactions.

  • Do you think someone will come across better if they are innately funny, or does that matter?

It DOES matter. If you are funny already, just within your personality, then it will be easier to learn to be really funny on stage. Relatable material makes you more engaging. A good comedian will use the same trigger words to tell stories and to make conversational connections with people. Don’t try visibly to be funny, but restructure your sentence to give the funny “key word” at the end—like a punch line.

  • In business writing or in emails, people don’t usually write in a funny way; how can people get better at this?

You need for your personality to come through without being overly opinionated. Learn to be fun and playful. Expose yourself for people to react to some form of your story. I usually try to include three things, but make the third one funny.

  • Lightning Round Questions:
    • What trophy do you want on your mantel? The World Cup of Rugby for Ireland, and I want to be a player!
    • What is your guilty pleasure? Chocolate!
    • What are you currently reading? Originals by Adam Grant
    • What is your favorite productivity hack? Funny gift videos and emails
    • What is your personal motto? “Life is either a daring adventure or nothing at all.” –Helen Keller
    • What would you do differently, if given the chance to start over? “I would maybe become an entrepreneur earlier rather than traveling so much in my younger years.”

Create, Build and Automate with Fabienne Rapha?l

Thu, Apr 21, 2016

Welcome! My guest today is Fabienne Raphael, who is an online business coach, speaker, best-selling author, and podcaster of “Marketing to Crush Your Competitors.” She helps women cash in on their expertise and build their online businesses the right way, focusing on profitability and automation. Fabienne lives by the mantra “Connect, Build, Automate.” Let’s jump right in with Fabienne!

  • Tell us a little about your story.

My story as a woman entrepreneur is not like what I thought it would be. After obtaining my college degree in Physical Therapy, I always thought I would work a traditional job. My business and life partner introduced me to seminars, personal development, and the idea of “What if you had your own business?” My mind slowly opened to the idea of entrepreneurship. We started several businesses together before entering the world of online marketing.

  • In your early days, where did you find your clients?

Where I worked previously was where I first became a consultant. Most of my contacts at first came through word of mouth advertising, but I did try some direct mail and marketing to offer my at-home physical therapy services.

  • Was your direct mail on postcards?

No, I used letters, sent in three intervals over a six-week time period. I wanted to introduce myself to potential clients and build my credibility and rapport within the community. Within two months, I started getting new clients as a result of the letters.

  • How would an online business owner acquire mailing addresses?

There are certain websites that have addresses and Facebook lists allow you to refine your search criteria to target your audience. I can use those searches to get guests that I want to have on my podcast. I think the personal action of mailing letters gets attention and speaks to people.

  • Is the best strategy to send out a cold letter at first?

Well, the letter will differ as to whether or not you have had contact with the person before. You may have some first mailings that are cold, but some come from previous contact.

  • Today, what are you doing in your business?

I’m an online business coach for service-based businesses. I help them learn to automate processes to increase revenue and free up their time through automation.

  • What do you suggest as critical steps in starting out in online business?

Ask yourself the following: Is there a market for what I’m passionate about?

How can I target a specific audience and not just everyone?

Don’t be afraid to reach out for help!

  • When doing research about your starting your business, what particular things should you look for?

If the niche is popular, you shouldn’t be scared. You can go for a different audience, like targeting the beginners in that niche who know less and have less experience. Every voice can be unique.

  • Concerning your podcast, how do you connect with “influencers”?

Influencers are people who are well-known in their market and have huge followings. Find common ground with them and be sincere in following them and giving them feedback. Find a way to stand out to them and they will usually respond when you reach out to them. See how you can share their message and help them shine.

  • How did you approach influencers about coming on your podcast?

I focused on following them and being active on their blogs. I like to send personal emails on reviews. Support them and dig into their work. At major events, let them know you are attending. The more you humanize the process, the greater results you will have.

  • Lightning Round Questions:
    • What trophy would you like to have on your mantel? “The person who influenced the most people on earth positively.”
    • What is your guilty pleasure? Almond Cake
    • What book are you reading? The Fast Lane Millionaire by M. J. DeMarco
    • What is your one productivity hack that you can share? “Prioritize ONE thing each day.”
    • What is your personal motto? “Success is something you attract by the person you become.” –Jim Roan
    • What would you do differently if you started over again? “I think it took too long for me to learn to delegate. I should have done it sooner.”

Emotional resilience, overcoming self-doubt, and mindset shifts with Kim Ades

Thu, Apr 14, 2016

Welcome! Today’s guest is Kim Ades, who designed The Frame of Mind coaching program to provide executive coaching clients with a powerful infrastructure to help them achieve higher levels of success. Kim is here to help us understand emotional resilience, overcoming self-doubt, and mindset shifts. Join us!

  • Tell us about the first job you ever had.

I was the salad bar girl at a Subway shop in Montreal.

  • How did you start coaching and doing all that you do today?

I am really a serial entrepreneur; I owned a company and found that a higher degree of emotional resilience is the determinant in success. This is what led me to coaching.

  • What does “having emotional resilience” really mean? Is it being completely relentless that is the ultimate success factor?

We all know that life experiences knock us down sometimes. Those who can get back up will have a higher level of success than others.

  • Do you think that failure is important to experience and understand your resilience?

Yes, failure is important to success. Failure helps you get better, sharper, and tougher. You have to be aware of your strengths and weaknesses.

  • How can people get over self-doubt?

We ask our coaching clients to journal in an online journal that goes to a coach for a response. This allows the client to write down the story about their failure. We want to teach people to reinterpret the events that lead to failure.

  • How does journaling through a failure help me?

We want to see how their thinking affects their outcomes and see where the self-limiting beliefs impact them. We are looking at how you respond to what happens to you.

  • Can you give us some tools of thought-mastery in journaling?

One exercise is to write down, in paragraph form, your answers to the following questions:

What do I really, really want?

Why don’t I currently have what I really, really want?

After writing these down, challenge every reason you’ve listed; this tells you where your thinking isn’t aligned with your goals.

  • Is emotional resilience being able to overcome whatever adversity you go through?

Absolutely! When the negative occurs, we shut down and close in. We teach clients to examine the negative and use those experiences as a contrast to gain clarity on what they really want instead.

  • Do you have other ways besides journaling to get over the self-doubt after a failure?

We all experience some form of self-doubt, even the most successful people. People with a high degree of emotional resilience recognize the self-doubt, but don’t allow it to paralyze them. A mindset shift takes place. It’s about understanding the risk and mitigating it.

  • What is a strategy for success for women entrepreneurs to keep in mind?

Many entrepreneurs are doing too many things! Identify and focus on core strengths. Work hard to eliminate and outsource the rest. Start to believe that you can find the resources you need.

  • Do you have any techniques you can recommend for women entrepreneurs?

I have two tips: Try things out before going full-fledged. Take care of the way you think.

  • Lightning Round Questions:
    • What trophy do you want on your mantel? “Best Mom Ever”
    • What is your guilty pleasure? Getting facials
    • What are you currently reading? Scaling Up by Verne Harnish
    • What is your favorite productivity hack? Make a list!
    • What is your personal motto? “Do your best and keep trying.”
    • What would you do differently if you could start all over? “I’d be a little less averse to debt and be willing to take on some to grow at a faster rate.”

How to Go from Mom to Mogul While Keeping Your Family Intact with Liz O'Donnell

Thu, Mar 17, 2016

My guest today is Liz O’Donnell, a wannabe mogul, busy working mom, and (sometimes) maid. She is the founder of Hello Ladies, an award-winning website for smart, busy women. It was named one of the Top 100 Websites for Women by Forbes. She has written the book, Mogul, Mom, and Maid, which looks at the choices, options, and the impact of women’s decisions on them, their families, and their careers. Let’s explore the following questions with Liz:

  • What brought you where you are today, and what was your first job?

I signed up with a temp agency, thinking I would be doing office work. They stuck me at an Adult Day Health Center, which was NOT what I expected. I was so intimidated, working with the elderly people, but I ended up LOVING it!

  • What made you write your book?

My girlfriends and I get together occasionally for “Wine and Whine” sessions. A good friend was sharing about her busy mom schedule and her husband’s involvement and irritation when the house was messy. It occurred to me that women face these challenges with gender roles, juggling so many aspects of their lives. Even though, in my case, my husband stays home while I’m the breadwinner, I know that many women face the same struggles.

  • What do you see as the mindblocks that women have about the balance we are striving for?

The key is that we all strive for something different and define success differently. The biggest mindblock to success is understanding that women have different ideals. Women do 67% more of the housework and childcare than men in the average home. Don’t compare yourself to others. Women also fall into the “We do it BEST” trap and don’t allow their husbands to do certain tasks. Also, women tend to assign superlatives to every action. We forget something and think, “Oh, I’m the WORST mom ever!” A dad can forget the same thing and thinks, “Oh, I forgot.”

  • Is it a mindblock when women question why their husband is taking on a specific task, like “Does he think I can’t do it?”

Yes, that is absolutely a mindblock. We have to remember that the whole gender role shift is a relatively new thing that has occurred in recent years. Gender norms are ingrained in our heads based on how we grew up. We now have different roles than our parents did, but still feel the guilt and the pull when we aren’t the mothers that we grew up with.

  • Do you have any tips for busy, working moms who want to be entrepreneurs and “do it all”?

I use the metaphor, “Put down the mop!” I mean that we should prioritize our lives over our laundry. We all want to be good wives, good moms, and good employees. What are the things that we do because we feel like we “should” be doing them? If we stop doing all those things, then it creates space to do other things that we WANT to do. Don’t compare yourself to others; get off social media!

  • Do you think shutting down social media is the BEST thing to do?

Sometimes. Social media is a powerful tool that can lead to great business connections, relationships, and networking opportunities. It’s not all bad, but there are times to shut it down. A strategy I recommend is to define 3-5 non-negotiables that absolutely matter to me:

*Being home at least 3 nights/week with my family

*Finding time to write every week

*Making sure I do a great job at my PR firm

*Finding time to exercise enough to maintain my sanity

If I do these four things, then that’s a WIN. It’s my definition of success.

  • Do you think we can connect our non-negotiables to our overall goals?

Absolutely. I have goals around my writing and career goals. My job has to be something that I say YES to.

  • What are the Top Three Beliefs of Successful Women?

Being a working mother means never having to say you’re sorry.

Never feeling guilty about providing for my family

Never feeling guilty for putting my family first

  • What would you say to women entrepreneurs who are just starting out and not able to provide for their families yet?
  • Don’t try to justify what you do. Reframe your thoughts around what you’re modeling for your children. Hopefully I’m teaching them to pursue goals and dreams and see the long-term potential until the dollars start rolling in.
  • Build a power network of women who support you. Cultivate the network BEFORE you actually need it.
  • From Robert Frost: “The only way through is through.” So many working mothers are also “working daughters” who are caring for aging parents. Face the challenges and DIVE IN!
  • The trophy you want on your mantel? “Best Mom”
  • Your guilty pleasure? Really, really BAD television. It’s so bad that I won’t even share!
  • Currently reading? Unfinished Business by Anne-Marie Slaughter
  • Your favorite productivity hack? “I set a timer to work on small tasks.”
  • Your personal motto? “The only way through is through.”
  • What would you do differently? “Start my own business sooner.”
