Description

Welcome to the Finance Career Launch podcast, where we have one goal - to make sure you develop your full potential as a finance professional so you can contribute as much as possible to your organization and, as a result, advance your career. This is a finance podcast for professionals or students interested in competitive financial fields such as, investment banking, commercial banking, private equity, corporate finance, corporate development, personal financial advisory, wealth management, corporate insurance, commercial real estate, etc. I am your host, David Mariano. I am a Director with Western Reserve Partners, a middle market investment bank in Cleveland, OH. I have spent most of my career working with business owners, CEOs, CFOs and Heads of Corporate Development as an advisor, part-owner and/or business leader. I have served in many other capacities, including Manager of Financial Planning & Analysis, VP of Finance, Head of Marketing and General Manager, and have made the transition from an entry-level, analytical role to one focused on leadership and business development. I entered the finance world like most people - I was young, ambitious and ready to take on the world. I was willing to put in long hours and eager to do whatever it took to succeed. And once I secured my dream job, I thought I was all set. I did very well early on, but I began to run into some stumbling blocks around year 5. All of a sudden I was responsible for teams of people and struggled with leadership and delegation. It was difficult for me to pull myself away from the details. I was responsible for client interaction, project management and was assuming more business development responsibilities. As I became overwhelmed, I became less productive and couldn't quite articulate what was going on. For years, I was frustrated, unhappy and didn’t know what to do to fix it. I had became very proficient at ‘the job’, but I didn’t have a clue how to build a successful career. I felt lost. I realize this now, but, in addition to some lack of training and knowledge, one of my biggest problems was that I was trying to do this alone. My independent nature has served me well for the most part but, in hindsight, I realized I was also a bit naive. NO ONE succeeds without help from other people. I needed a mentor. Deep down I understood the value of mentors, but I didn’t know how to find the right one. As it turns out (probably no surprise to you) I'm not alone - people all over the world want to advance and be promoted. Many people understand that a mentor can help with this. It is hard to find external mentors who 'get' your situation. When you find someone, they are often the busy ones. I am asked daily for advice. So are many of my colleagues. In a perfect world, the logical place to go is your boss or other colleagues. I'm sure there are many successful people around you. Unfortunately this is tough. It can be awkward and uncomfortable to ask for career advice from those people you are trying to impress. I don't think it has to be this way or is like this everywhere, but it's rare to have this type of culture. There are some resources out there for certain careers in finance. They are pretty good at giving very specific training on financial modelling and technical skills. They also are great if you are looking to break into the industry as a student. The problem is that it stops there. None of them address the long, hard road of building a career. None of them help you address the challenges you face once you get there. Finance Career Launch fills this void. For the complete mixed media mentoring experience, head over to http://financecareerlaunch.com/.
