Part comedy, part tragedy, it’s the life of a writing team trying to make it in Hollywood. We’ve sold movies, we’re in the Writer’s Guild, we’ve pitched TV shows to networks – but we’re still working on our big break. Our show is about writing, Hollywood and our experiences on the way to…we wish we knew what.

Sam and Jim's podcasts ooze into my writing hand and make my hand less shaky as I try to find the right word and sentence to make my story zing. It's a pleasure to listen to them speak of their successes and "learning experiences" in writing for TV.

The premise goes like this: Two successful entrepreneurs from Minnesota decide to leave a thriving restaurant business for the incredibly risky life of a Hollywood TV Writer. This podcast basically traces the success and failure of these writing partners, and how they have worked to find their niche in La-La Land. For anyone that is an aspiring writer or for someone that doesn't know what to do about achieving their dreams, this is just the podcast to find some inspiration. While Sam and Jim have found some success and sold a few scripts, even they would be loathe to admit they are anywhere near what they ultimately want. The best thing about this podcast is how accessible it is: Sam and Jim offer a good quality commentary on the hopes and dreams that fuel their daily lives. From what I can tell they're income is derived entirely from whatever they sell as writers. I live in Hollywood, I know what the daily expense level is, and therefore I can't impress enough upon you the amount of risk these two have put themselves through. What's admirable is the level they've taken it: they HAD a series of successful businesses in St. Paul, and the GAVE THEM UP for an intangible but nevertheless omnipresent lifelong dream. Personally I like that, and being someone that wants to work in motion pictures myself, I respond to their devotion. Each podcast, Sam and Jim go over what they've been doing in the business, and devote some time to topics related to the craft of being a screenwriter. Sometimes there are big gaps in between podcasts, and ultimately I don't mind that, because the more I get to know these guys, the more I hope those gaps mean they've found something successful that is occupying their time. I recommend this podcast to anyone that is risking their skin as a writer; you will find kindred spirits here.

Every show starts out with what Sam and Jim must hear from all the time from women when they tell them that they're writers: "Oh he's a writer...he's a writer...do you know any directors?"
As struggling writers, Sam and Jim are brutally honest in chronicling their fight against what they call The Hollywood Machine, made up of endless meetings that don't amount to anything and disinterested TV executives. Sam and Jim go quite in-depth into the process of writing and the challenges that writers face in Hollywood. This might be a drawback for the average listener because it does get a bit lengthy after a while. However, for fellow aspiring writers, Sam and Jim's show is a must.
The sound quality is not as good as other podcasts and their voices are a bit low. However, they do play a funky and upbeat tempo between segments that make up for it.
