Episode 46: The Arian Century Part 8, A New Sheriff in Town

Sun, Jun 07, 2015

Description: When Theodosius was appointed to clean up the mess in the eastern part of the Roman Empire, he was served with a tall order. The Goths were rampaging through the countryside and who could blame them the way they were treated? Theodosius would embrace Christianity in a serious way, but not just Christianity in general, but a specific form of Christianity. Orthodox Catholic Trinitarian Christianity was Theodosius’ choice and he was going to use all of his power to push all other forms of the religion out of the picture. Not only that, he was going to push out any and all other religious faiths, making Trinitarian Christianity the official religion of the Roman Empire. Theodosius was the new sheriff in town and nothing was going to be the same after.

In the next few episodes, we are going to explore several individual stories which will all lead us into the Second Ecumenical Council held in Constantinople in 381AD. The First Ecumenical Council, or world-wide synod, which took place at Nicaea in modern day Turkey, involved many of the biggest names of the day and really turned the Roman world on its head. Christianity, which was a heavily persecuted religion, became the preferred religion of the Empire all in the course of a few short years. The foundations of Christianity needed to be solidified though if  it was to become the unifying force in the Roman Empire.

Episode 34: The Council of Nicaea Part 8 The Canons

Sat, Jul 26, 2014

The first ecumenical council, the First Council of Nicaea in 325AD, was a pivotal moment in Christianity. Once the Creed of Nicaea was defined, the bishops at the Council had a number of important issues they needed deal with. The bishops at the council created twenty canons, or rules of faith that created the guidelines the clergy and the laity would follow going forward. All this was done under the watchful eye of the Emperor Constantine.

Sun, Jul 06, 2014

Constantine’s purpose for calling an ecumenical council was to stabilize and unify the Roman Empire. For many reasons, the Empire was neither stabilized nor unified. Theological battles were raging inside of the Empire and groups outside of the borders of the Empire were on the move. A bishop variously named Ulfila, Wulfilas or even Orphila was central to all of these critical historical movements of the fourth century.

Thu, Jun 05, 2014

The creed or statement of beliefs from the First Ecumenical Council at Nicaea was what the whole thing was really about.  The Church and Constantine had a whole agenda of other various gripes, issues and complaints they needed to address, but the creed or basic beliefs of the Church and by default mainstream Christianity was the main event. After the Nicene Creed was written, the Church would have the mission statement it would use until this day.

Sat, May 24, 2014

The First Ecumenical Council, The Council of Nicaea, wasn’t just about Arianism. The Council had a laundry list of controversies, problems, gripes and grievances to deal with which had built up in the Christian Church since day one. Constantine the Great wanted a unified Empire and what he needed to attain that goal was a unified religion. Setting a uniform date for the celebration of Easter, the most important holiday in the religion was of huge importance in creating uniformity. The Popes of Rome and the Church of Rome will play their role in establishing the timing of Easter.

Episode 30: The First Council of Nicaea Part 4, Arianism

Wed, Apr 16, 2014

Arianism might not have been the idea of Arius of Alexandria alone, but he was the one who definitely popularized that set of theological positions. The writings, creeds and canons of the First Ecumenical Council at Nicaea in 325 made it very clear where the Church stood on Arianism and what the Christian God was all about, but that didn’t mean everything was written in stone. One way or the other history of the Popes of Rome and the Christian Church would be altered tremendously at this council.

There were so many problems in the Egyptian Church, which magnified problems in other local churches, the Emperor Constantine felt he had to step in. Meletius of Lycopolis, probably inadvertently, gave the firebrand preacher Arius a perfect platform to spread his ideology.

Episode 21: Ante-Nicene Popes Part 2

Sun, Sep 15, 2013

The second part of our tour of the popes before the Council of Nicaea will start in a fairly stable situation where Christianity was largely tolerated, but we will quickly move into the first formal, centralized persecution of the Christian Church. The third centry of the common era was not a great time to live in the Roman Empire, especially as a Christian. We are right around the corner from Constantine, but it will be a rough ride to get there.
