History According to Bob Podcast

History According to Bob Podcast

by Bob Packett

Professor Bob Packett has been teaching history for thirty years. His passion for history permeates his entire life, from the thousands of primary resouce materials in his personal library, to his collection of historical artifacts. Professor Bob loves to tell stories of the real people behind the often sterile descriptions found in history texts. His conversational style, filled with anecdotes, quips, and humor, will bring to life the characters of history.

Now, through the technology of podcasting, you can also enjoy what Professor Bob's students have been enjoying for years — history that comes alive.

Voluminous and usually good, December 19, 2007
Reviewer: AnneTheMan

Bob Packett is a college history professor that simply cannot stop talking. He delivers history lectures, with sources, on a daily basis, touching on all corners of history.
Be on the look out for thematical series. French revolution was very good. World War 1 is fantastic. I am looking forward to the Franks.
The American Presidents, on the other hand, I found tedious.
Last but not least, there is always a good laugh with the famous mistresses of history. You haven't heard History according to Bob if you haven't heard Bob say the word 'unfortunately'.

History According to Bob is a short but sweet podcast in which the charming Bob Packett briefly goes over randomly chosen historical tidbits that he's come across in his 30 years as a history teacher. Do you want a sample? Well have you ever found yourself wondering what governed German U-Boat etiquette during World War 1? Interested in Mayan creationist myth? How about the time the Russians created a CIRCULAR war ship that unintentionally turned into a spinning top on its maiden voyage? These are the different topics Bob goes over for your pleasure, and I have to say, the show wouldn't work nearly as well if it weren't for bob's personality. He reminds me of my favorite teachers: kinda nerdy, but self aware and ultimately a gas to learn from. He ends each podcast with a thank you and a genuine hope that everyone enjoys what he's had to say. This is a valuable podcast, not only for the information imparted, but also because of the personality that brings it to life. Yes, Bob coughs and pauses during his delivery, but in the end, he's part of the reason podcasting is so vibrant and alive. Instead of hearing scripted, polished news that's as dry as a fossil, we hear a real teacher sharing his passion with the hope that listeners will benefit from what's he's found. Best of all, this information is totally free.

Think about the smartest friend you've got. Now imagine that friend explaining an important historical event, term, or process to you. His or her explanation would probably be pretty conversational and understandable rather than stiff and scholarly. Well, that's exactly how the History According to Bob Podcast plays. Listening to Bob talk about history is like listening to an old friend.

I have listened to two shows now, and am planning on subscribing. I learned several obscure tidbits about papal indulgences and the founding of Rome that I never knew before. Best of all, at the end of the podcast, Bob recites a couple of book titles or website addresses in case the listener wants to learn a bit more about the day's topic. This a very educational and interesting podcast.

I listened to several of the History According to Bob Podcasts. I’m not a huge fan of history, but I found each podcast truly interesting. Bob has a vast knowledge of history and a large repertoire of historical anecdotes. He really has a personable teaching style and his passion for history is contagious.

Bob’s podcasts aren’t very long, but he packs each one with tons of information. The topics he covers in his broadcasts are varied. I especially enjoyed the show on “Thor – More Than A Guy with a Hammer” because I enjoy learning about mythology. Bob’s podcasts will undoubtedly attract a lot of fans. History buffs will definitely want to subscribe to this podcast for some great entertainment.
