The Daily Idiom Podcast

The Daily Idiom Podcast

by Robert Diem

The Daily Idiom is a podcast lesson for learners of English at the intermediate to advanced level. Each lesson focuses on one idiom or slang expression. An idiom is an expression, often slang, often very colorful, that has a non-literal meaning. They are very common in the English language, but difficult to master.

Learning idioms is one of the most challenging parts of learning a new language. In addition, it's one of the most important. Unfortunately many of the traditional audio learning products (e.g., Pimsleur, Rosetta Stone) don't always do a good job of teaching idioms. Daily Idiom Podcast to the rescue!

The Daily Idiom Podcast is a short podcast (1-2 minutes) that teaches a commonly used idiom in the English language. It's a cool and easy way to learn and they offer review questions as well. The sound quality was a bit lacking but otherwise it's a good podcast. I would only subscribe if you have a means to automatically listen to podcasts (because of the length) but having said that, I would recommend The Daily Idiom Podcast to people learning english.

As you can guess from the title of this podcast, The Daily Idiom introduces listeners to one idiom from the English language per day. This podcast is clearly intended for listeners whose native language is not English. Non-native English speakers might find the content interesting, but I doubt that native English speakers would.

The host does a good job of presenting the idiom, giving the definition, and then using the idiom in a sentence. His pronunciation is clear and his diction is slow, both of which are important for language learners.

On the other hand, I thought the audio quality was rather poor and amateurish. This might not be such a big factor for most people considering that the broadcast was just a minute and a half long, but it still bothered me. Furthermore, the host gives a couple of "review questions" for listeners, but doesn't tell the answers. I think the review portion would be much more effective if he followed through with the correct responses.

The good and bad points combine for a 3-star rating from me.

The Daily Idiom Podcast by Robert Diem features an idiom daily. The host gives sufficient examples to illustrate the idiom, and suggests alternative idioms having the same meaning. For example, the August 27 broadcast has 'keep your chin up' as the idiom. Robert Diem gives good examples of situations in which one can use this, and also suggests 'hang in there' as an alternative. The broadcasts end with one-two test questions. However, what I found was that these questions are not related to the idiom discussed, nor are answers to them given by the host. I feel that this is something which may not be of help to listeners.

Overall, however, this is an excellent podcast. It is interesting and helpful not only to ESL students but also to the general english-speaking audience wishing to brush up their knowledge of idioms. The audio quality and narration are good. I give this podcast 4.5 stars.
