What Does it Mean to be “Partakers in the Divine Nature?” 2 Peter 1:4 - Carl Olson - Deep in Scripture

Author: Marcus Grodi
Tue, Dec 06, 2016

Carl Olson, Editor of Catholic World Report for Ignatius Press, joins Marcus Grodi to discuss 2 Peter 1:2-4, where St. Peter talks about the idea of becoming partakers in Jesus’ divine nature.  How, exactly, is this supposed to work?  Are we invited to become ‘gods’ ourselves?  Certainly Mormon theologians would argue for this perspective.   Does it mean we will eventually be absorbed into the Godhead, as is taught in Buddhism?  Or is something else meant by what the Church Fathers refer to as “divinization?”

Colossians 2:8 - What are the “traditions of men” that Paul warns Christians against? - Dr. Jim Papandrea

Author: Marcus Grodi
Wed, Oct 19, 2016

One of the verses most commonly used to argue against the Catholic Church is St. Paul’s admonition in his letter to the Colossians to not be led astray by “empty philosophies” and the “traditions of men.” To what traditions is St. Paul referring?  And if Sacred Scripture springs forth from the tradition of its being reverenced in the liturgy, is Paul arguing against the use of the Bible itself?  Dr. Jim Papandrea, a professor of Church History at Garret-Evangelical Seminary on the Campus of Northwestern University, looks at the implications of this controversial teaching from St. Paul.

What does it mean that the Creator of the Universe took on flesh? Genesis 1 and John 1 - Rob “The Donut Man” Evans

Author: Marcus Grodi
Wed, Sep 07, 2016

God made the natural world, and then, as a baby in Bethlehem 2000 years ago, was introduced to that same world as a physical part of it in the person of Jesus.  If the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, what does it then mean that he promised that the bread and cup that we take at Communion would also become his flesh?  Rob Evans, who has entertained thousands of children for the past several decades as “The Donut Man,” talks with Marcus about the meaning of the incarnation of Jesus, and its implications for our lives as people of the sacraments.

How do we join our sufferings to those of Jesus? Romans 8:16-17 - Bruce Sullivan - Deep in Scripture

Author: Marcus Grodi
Wed, Aug 17, 2016

Former Church of Christ minister Bruce Sullivan joins Marcus Grodi on this episode of Deep in Scripture to discuss Romans 8:16-17, where St. Paul talks about the Holy Spirit bearing witness with our spirit that we are heirs with Christ- which is great- but then it goes on to say that we become those heirs through being joined with Christ in his suffering so as to receive his glory.  What does it mean to suffer for Christ?  Should we seek out suffering?  What about the notion that suffering can be a result, not of our desire to identify with Christ, but rather due to our own disobedience to God?

Bruce Sullivan is the author of “Christ in His Fullness.”

“You are not to be called ‘rabbi…’ and call no man on earth ‘father?’” – Matthew 23:8-9 – Kenneth Hensley

Author: Marcus Grodi
Tue, Jun 28, 2016

Fuller Theological Seminary product and former Baptist pastor Kenneth Hensley joins Marcus Grodi to look at one of the main verses some Bible-only Christians use to try and prove that Catholicism is unbiblical.  Are Catholics violating a core teaching of Jesus if they call priests ‘father?’  If so, does that also mean we sin by calling anyone ‘rabbi,’ ‘teacher,’ ‘master,’ or even ‘mister?’  In our ongoing exploration of hard verses in the Bible, Marcus and Ken dig into this passage, which has long been the focus of debate in Protestant-Catholic conversations.

Author: Marcus Grodi
Wed, Jun 15, 2016

When Ephesians 5 pops up in the lectionary, every pastor knows what kind of fallout they need to be prepared for.  Does submission in a family relationship diminish the value of certain members?  What are the implications for the Church in regard to obedience to hierarchy?  Can someone who is given a Biblical mandate to lead and govern forfeit the legitimacy of their claim to authority through immoral or imprudent behavior?  Marcus Grodi and Steve Wood look at the meaning of authority and obedience in an age where rebellion and disobedience seem to be heralded as virtues.

“Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ loved the church… cleansing her by the bath of water with the word”; Ephesians 5:25-26 - What is the meaning of that bath of cleansing?

Author: Marcus Grodi
Tue, May 24, 2016

One of the more controversial chapters in the Bible for pastors to preach on is Ephesians 5, because of Paul’s statement about wives submitting to their husbands.  Deacon Alex Jones addresses another challenging portion of the same chapter- when Paul says a husband should lay down his life for his wife, “cleansing her by the bath of water with the word.”  In his Pentecostal days, Deacon Alex saw salvation through receiving the word of God as primary, and the washing of water through Baptism as merely a later affirmation of what had happened when the word was received.  He and Marcus discuss the historical teaching of the Church in regard to this passage from St. Paul’s letter to the Ephesians.

Author: Marcus Grodi
Thu, Oct 08, 2015

Deep in Scripture Podcast is returning with a new series entitled “Hard Verses”!

We believe that to be deep in history and deep in Scripture is to become deep in Christ. This idea is based on the teachings of John Henry Newman and St. Jerome, both committed to Jesus and His Word. In fact St. Jerome once wrote, “To be ignorant of Scripture is to be ignorant of Christ.” In this we see all three aspects of this idea, for Jerome was an early Doctor of the Church, who dedicated his life to the study of Scripture and devotion to Christ. Every episode we will explore what it means to be “Deep in Scripture”, interviewing a special guest about a scripture verse that they would have considered “hard” to interpret, apply, or even preach [...]

To Bring about the Obedience of Faith, Romans 16:1-27

Author: Marcus Grodi
Thu, May 14, 2015

How does Saint Paul, as apostle and missionary bishop, warn the Christians in Rome (where he has never visited) to only follow teachers who proclaim “the doctrine which you have been taught” and to avoid those “in opposition to” this apostolic tradition? This needs tender care because, though he knows personally faithful leaders in Rome, he has only heard rumors about the bad teachers. To name these people “who create dissensions and difficulties”, he would have to depend upon second-hand rumors. So, as a wise bishop, he first gives a long list of faithful Christian leaders they can trust, then warns them generally to avoid those who teach otherwise. All of this—all of the book of Romans—has been to “bring about the obedience of faith.”

Romans 15 & 16

Author: Marcus Grodi
Wed, May 06, 2015

As St Paul closes his letter to the Christians at Rome, he first tells them of his desire to finally come an see them. However, he first has another task: to take the alms collected from several churches to help the struggling Christians in Jerusalem. In this we hear our call own call to comfort and support - our responsibility to - our Christian brothers and sisters to whom we are united in baptism. We also hear St Paul affirm how important it is for us to pray for one another - his ministry and each of ours depends upon our shared prayers for one another. We then hear about all the faithful friends Paul had in Rome, through whom he had become aware of the needs of the Christians in Rome. He talks about multiple churches and even a women whom he called a deaconess. What do these references mean for us today? This is what discussed today on Deep In Scripture.

Chain Reference Bible Study & Paul’s Reasons For Writing, Romans 15:14-33

Author: Marcus Grodi
Wed, Apr 29, 2015

In this section, St Paul moves on from deeper theological and ethical teachings to discuss why he has written so boldly to the Roman Christians, why he has not visited them, but why now he plans to do so. In these verses, we hear allusions to the power of the mysteries, or the sacraments as they will be called: to the changes that he as a bishop can assume are true in the lives of all baptized Christians; to his responsibilities as an “ordained” missionary bishop; and to the liturgical sacrifices of the Eucharist. Paul confesses that all that he has written them and all that he has accomplished throughout his missionary journeys is not the result of his own efforts, but what Christ has wrought through him. He is merely seeking to be obedient to Christ and his calling, and this will now mean, God willing, taking the gospel to the ends of the earth.

Is Faith Between us and God?, Romans 14:22-15:13 , Romans 14:22-15:13

Author: Marcus Grodi
Wed, Apr 22, 2015

Given the challenging call of Christ “to be perfect as our heavenly Father is perfect” and St. Paul’s call for us to not be conformed to the world but to be transformed, there can be a temptation to become self focused on our individual salvation. However, being a faithful follower of Christ has always meant being a faithful member of the Family of God, or as Paul says elsewhere, the Body of Christ, the Church of the Living God. This means we are to be concerned about each other’s growth in Christ. This will involve protecting and keeping the faith we have received and bearing with the failings of weaker brothers; we are to be steadfast in the faith we have received, and the Scriptures have been given as an encouragement; but we are not called to do this on our own, but through the power of God, the source of unity, joy, peace, and hope.

Romans 14

Author: Marcus Grodi
Wed, Apr 22, 2015

Again, following St Paul’s instructions to transform our thinking (Rom 12:1,2), this requires examining our lifestyles down to most simple habits of eating and drinking. The truth is, in many ways our Christian Faith frees us up from the scrupulous and over-zealous legalism of many well-meaning religious people. Many build their faith upon life-constricting regulations that have no basis in Scripture or the teachings of the church. Yet, what is our responsibility before these well-meaning “weaker” brothers and sisters? Should we ignore their scrupulous irises and flaunt our freedoms? What if it is their misinterpretations of our freedoms that holds them back from coming home to the Church? This is what we discuss today on DIS.

The Christian and the Governing Authorities, Romans 13:1-14 Continued

Author: Marcus Grodi
Fri, Apr 10, 2015

In Romans 12:1,2, St Paul calls Christians to continue their conversion by transforming their minds—and not conforming to the world, or the culture around them. In chapter 14 we see that this involves trusting that God is in control of our Country, our government, and its leaders, to whom we are to submit. But what if the laws they have passed are contradictory to the moral laws of our faith? Must we submit? This is part of what we discuss today on DIS.

Question About the “Pillar & Bullwark” and Romans 12:9-21

Author: Marcus Grodi
Wed, Mar 25, 2015

Email: Mr. Grodi, I have heard you quip many times & in your books that when Scripture says (1 Tim 3:15) that the pillar and bulwark of the truth is the Church, Jesus could not have meant the thousands of denominations divided by contrary interpretations of Scripture we now have in our world, for how could an invisible church of faithful believers be the pillar and bulwark of anything? This may sound reasonable, but if this seeming disunited diversity is contrary to God’s will, then why does God continue to bless hundreds of thousands of non-Catholic Christians? Why does He continue to use these non-Catholic Christian traditions to inspire and evangelize thousands of people every year around the globe out of darkness, into faith in Jesus Christ, away from sin, into prayerful, devotional lives, and even out of secular lives into lives dedicated to ministry? With so few people worldwide [...]

Thu, Feb 19, 2015

Today Marcus and Ken discuss Romans 11:11-24 in which St. Paul explains God’s mysterious plan of incorporating the Gentiles into his plan of salvation. Using the imagery of the vine from the Old Testament, Paul calls Gentile Christians to humility and hope for the return of the Jews to their Messiah.

Listener Email: Dear CHN, God bless you for the work you do. Can you discuss the development of modern Protestantism and of Protestant thought from the reformation forward. For instance, the novelties of altar calls, sinner’s prayers, symbolic baptism, symbolic Eucharist, personal relationship, personal interpretations of scriptures, rejection of infant baptism, etc. I would find this useful in my discussions with Protestant family members to help illustrate the theological novelty of Protestant theology in the framework of Catholic salvation history. Being Sent to Preach, Romans 10:13-21

Author: Marcus Grodi
Wed, Feb 04, 2015

St. Paul quotes Joel that all who call upon the Lord will be saved. Did the Old Testament prophet Joel mean everyone or just the Jews? Building upon other OT prophesies, St. Paul emphasizes that for a person to call upon the Lord, that person must first believe the gospel, and for them to believe they must hear, and for them to hear someone must preach. But can just anyone decide that they are called to preach? And how can one know whether what one is preaching or hearing is true? This all has to do with being sent.

St. Paul, Why Haven’t Jews Responded to the Gospel of Christ? Romans 9:30-10:13

Author: Marcus Grodi
Sat, Jan 24, 2015

Continuing our study of Romans, we’re right in the middle of the section in which Saint Paul addresses the question: “Why haven’t all the Jews responded to the Gospel of Christ?” They were the chosen people, but yet the majority of the Jews did not accept Jesus as their Messiah. Why? In this first half of chapter 10, Paul addresses the question of faith versus works of the Law, and the necessity of confessing with our lips and believing in our hearts.

A few key points for today’s discussion:
1) This is Paul’s Theodicy—i.e. his justification of the ways of God.
2) His purpose is to explain the ways of God in allowing the Gentiles to share in the Jews’ privileges of the Covenant.
3) The text never says that God predestines people to damnation.

Why Haven’t Others Responded to the Call of Jesus Christ? Romans 9:1-13

Author: Marcus Grodi
Wed, Jan 14, 2015

In this passage, Saint Paul addresses a question that nearly every Christian wonders: Why haven’t my friends and family members, or even the majority of Mankind, responded to the call of Jesus Christ? Why are they set against coming to Church? Why don’t they believe in God? Is it their ignorance? Their stubbornness? Is it my fault? Or is it God’s fault? Did God predestine from the beginning of time that they would not believe and not be saved? Or did He just foreknow how they would respond?

Romans 8:18-30

Author: Marcus Grodi
Tue, Dec 16, 2014

In this section St Paul builds upon what he assumes his Christian audience already accepts: that there is a close intimacy between God and His Creation. The Hebrews spoke often of this in their Psalms. St. Paul draws on this intimacy, as well as the separation and “groaning” that Creation experiences as a result of Man’s sin, as a metaphor of a Christian’s present experience in this world and the eventually resurrection of the body. Creation and Mankind stand side-by-side awaiting this redemption.

The Catholic Church and the “Mystical Body of Christ”, Romans 8:1-11

Author: Marcus Grodi
Thu, Dec 04, 2014

Today on Deep in Scripture Marcus and Ken discuss a fine email concerning the relationship between the Mystical Body of Christ and the Catholic Church. They go on to examine Romans 8:1-11. In 6, Paul emphasized that anyone in Christ through baptism has been freed from death and slavery to sin. Then in chapter 7, Paul gives a candid personal testimony of his own struggle against temptation and sin—even though he has been united with Christ through baptism. He ends chapter 7 with a testimony that the only answer to the continuing struggle is Jesus. Then in chapter 8, he picks up again what he had summarized in chapter 6: there is no condemnation for those who are in Christ (through baptism), and who remain in Christ by walking / living by the Spirit who dwells within them—by setting our minds on the Spirit.

Freed from the bond of sin, who will we serve? Romans 7:1-6

Author: Marcus Grodi
Thu, Nov 20, 2014

In answer to a listener email, we discuss how there are indeed ways in which we have, either blindly or willingly, become enslaved by our modern industrialist culture, particularly through our over dependence upon technology.

In today’s text, Romans 7:1-6, we see proof that the re-emphasis by Jesus of the original indissolubility of marriage has become the accepted norm of the Christian community. Paul assumes his Christian audience agrees that the marriage bond cannot be broken except by death. He then uses this assumption as an analogy of how our death in Christ has broken our bonds to sin. The question is, now that we are freed from the bond of sin, who will we serve?

EMAIL:

Dear Mr. Grodi and Dr. Howell:

A short time ago, you had some discussion in Deep in Scripture about salvation. I was wondering if you could tell me how you would respond to the following view about salvation and hell that there’s been a very long discussion about: “God is all powerful, God is all loving, has created us and wants us all to be saved; therefore He will find a way to make us all want to be saved and choose Him. No one will go to hell, because God hasn’t stepped off of the throne. Catholics are saying that God is not all powerful and sovereign and can’t make what He wants to happen happen. God would not create us to let us lose such an important thing as salvation.” Thank you very much for your help and for all of the information that you provide to people.

What is “the Gospel of God”? When St. Paul said he was not ashamed of the Gospel, or that he was “set apart for the gospel”, what did he meant by “the gospel”? Do all Christians agree on what this means? And what does “the gospel” require of us? What must we believe? What must we do? Or does it even require that we do anything, except believe in Jesus Christ? Today Marcus Grodi and Dr. Howell begin a series of study on the book of Romans.

Or how do you correct Christians who have inaccurate views of the faith, of Jesus, of the Church, which they only hear you through the lenses of their prejudice, or ignorance? Faith, Works and Abraham Part 2: What must we do to be saved? Galatians 3:1-14

Author: Marcus Grodi
Thu, Jul 10, 2014

“What must we do to be saved?” This question draws us into the theological questions of salvation, justification, sanctification, faith and works, and the diversity of opinions on these issues have sadly divided Christians for centuries. Both sides of the arguments claim Saint Paul as their champions, but especially, through Saint Paul, point to Abraham as the model for all men of faith. Many non-Catholic Christians still presume that Catholics believe that they are saved by works, but is this true? And was Abraham a model of faith without works? This is what we discuss today on Deep In Scripture.

Faith, Works and Abraham: What do Catholics Really Believe? Galatians 3:1-14

Author: Marcus Grodi
Thu, Jul 03, 2014

Many people asked Jesus, “What must I do to be saved?”, and two thousand years later, many more are still asking this question. Over these two thousand years, many Christians have answered this question by positing a clear division between faith and works, or faith and the law, based supposedly on statements by St. Paul in his NT letters—with Abraham as the model for all men of faith. Many non-Catholic Christians still presume that Catholics believe that they are saved by works, but is this true? And was Abraham a model of faith without works? This is what we discuss today on Deep In Scripture.

Today is the feast of St. Matthias. The remaining eleven apostles were gathered in the Upper Room, after the resurrection and ascension of our Lord, and Simon Peter, their leader appointed by Christ, called them to an important task: the replacement in the vacant office of Apostle of Judas. Of the two qualified men nominated, the Holy Spirit led them to chose St. Matthias, but the main reason for this act of choosing him to replace Judas was, as stated in the book of Acts, that “one of these men must become with us a witness to His resurrection.” Thus the primary importance of the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, which is what we will discuss today on Deep In Scripture.

We’re in the middle of Lent, preparing our hearts and our lives to appreciate and receive what our Lord Jesus did for us, gave for the whole world, on the Cross of Good Friday and the Resurrection of Easter. And a key factor in this preparation has always been, since the beginning of the celebration of Lent in the history of the church, the practice of fasting. In fact, prayer and fasting has always been a central part of the Judeo-Christian religion. But today, many if not most Christians do not practice any form of fasting, partly because their particular tradition does not encourage it, but also because many of us have forgotten why we should fast. This is what we will discuss to day on Deep IN Scripture.

Psalm 1 and the “Two Ways” – Deep in Scripture Radio

Author: Marcus Grodi
Wed, Mar 12, 2014

From the very beginning of time, throughout the biblical record, and on into the writing of the Early Church Fathers we encounter the idea of two ways that we can chose to live our lives. Throughout Church history this has always been the foundation of our faith. From the beginning of time, however, there has always been a counter voice, either denying or downplaying the distinction of these two ways, and in today’s world this distinction has become so blurred that to even mention it is to reap ridicule. As Isaiah prophesied, the day has come where what is good is called evil, and what is evil is called good. So what are these two ways? This is what we will discuss today on Deep In Scripture.

But how do we understand the relationship between this “one God” and this “one man Christ Jesus”? Must of us automatically hear this relationship through the doctrine of the Trinity, one God in three persons, but this doctrine itself is not found in Scripture, and not all Christians today, basing their faith on Scripture alone, believe in the doctrine of the Trinity. So how should we understand the relationship of God the Father, our Lord Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit?

1 Timothy 2 – Salvation and Mediation – Deep in Scripture

Author: Marcus Grodi
Thu, Feb 13, 2014

Saint Paul wrote in his first letter to Timothy that God our savior “desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth”. That the man Christ Jesus “gave himself as a ransom for all men”. What does this mean for all those people who have never heard the Gospel message? Or what about those who have heard – our friends and family – but who have rejected the gospel, rejected God? But there is another topic in this passage as well: How did Saint Paul understand the relationship between God our Savior and the man Christ Jesus and what does it mean that Christ is the only mediator between God and us? Join us for this episode of Deep in Scripture!

2 Timothy 3:17 and Sola Scriptura – Deep in Scripture

Author: Marcus Grodi
Thu, Feb 13, 2014

The Apostle Paul once wrote to his fellow bishop and son in the faith Timothy, that “all scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching for reproof for correction and for training in righteousness that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.” This verse from 2 Timothy is the primary verse used to defend the doctrine of Sola Scriptura. This is precisely what my guest and I did for many years. But does this verse teach Sola Scriptura? What does it say about the Bible we hold in our hands and which we consider so foundational to our faith now nearly 2000 years later? This is what we’ll be discussing today on Deep in Scripture.

I am the vine, you are the branches, John 15:4-7

Author: Marcus Grodi
Wed, Jan 04, 2006

Deep in Scripture Live! Scripture passage for Wednesday, January 4th 2006

“Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me. I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in me, and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing. If a man does not abide in me, he is cast forth as a branch and withers; and the branches are gathered, thrown into the fire and burned. If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask whatever you will, and it shall be done for you.” John 15:4-7
