Catholic Insider: Yeah!, August 17, 2006
Reviewer: Cade_One

I've been tuning in since the beginning. Fr Roderick does great work. This PodCast is of great quality. At times he seams a little too worldly, but he is very entertaining. And his coverage in Rome and of World Youth Day was amazing. It was like I was there. Even if you are not Catholic I think you would enjoy this PodCast.

I first started listening to Roderick Vonhögen's podcast when he started recording dispatches from the Vatican during the death of Pope John Paul. Listening to this young priest discuss the different emotions he was going through amidst fellow mourners was a wholly new experience that wouldn’t have been possible via regular TV or Print media. All too often, listening to the news detaches us from any notion of how huge world events affect everyday people. Later, Vonhogen recorded the crowds that filled Vatican square during the ascendancy of Benedict XVI, and I finally realized what the pope truly means to Catholics. Instead of the figurehead that I assumed everyone obeyed as the leader of the church, I heard real heartbreak in many voices, and an outpouring of genuine love for John Paul. It was an immersive experience: you were in Rome, you could hear the sadness and later the excitement in everyone’s voices, and best of all, you had an ‘insider’ that helped put it all in perspective. I’d take that over a front page news article any day.

This podcast made me realize the power that is being placed in the hands of regular people thanks to podcasting. The boundaries placed on regular journalism have dissolved: regular people are blowing away the mainstream media by virtue of being well, "regular".

Catholic Insider was the first podcast I subscribed to, and is still the one I look forward to listening to most on a daily basis. I'm not a catholic, and my creative sensibilities sometimes run counter to Roderick’s, but nevertheless I respond to his sincerity and warmth. Vonhögen gives indispensable access to modern European Catholicism, and if you feel the Catholic church has lost its modern context, I encourage you to give this priest a chance at changing your mind.

I am not a Catholic, but I had heard a few things about the Catholic Insider Podcast, so I decided to give it a listen. The thing that immediately jumped out at me was the obvious enthusiasm that Father Vonhögen possesses. This enthusiasm shines through whether he is talking about secular matters such as podcasting, or about spiritual matters such as faith.

I enjoyed this podcast because it showed me that at least one Catholic priest is pretty progressive and isn't afraid to embrace technology and use it to help further his mission.

The podcast was well done overall. The only thing that seemed a bit out of place was the religious music that was used to signify transitions in the show's topics. It was loud, and therefore a bit jarring. That's just a minor beef, however. I will definitely listen again.

I wasn't really sure what to expect when I downloaded my first epidsode of The Catholic Insider Podcast. I had heard a lot of good things about it and now I know why. Father Roderick Vonhogen has produced one of the more livelier, entertaining podcasts I've listened to thus far. And this is from a priest! :)

He covers a wide range of topics ranging from exorcism and the London bombings to Harry Potter and Star Wars. His podcasts are produced in short chunks (5-15 minutes) which in my opinion is the way most (if not all) podcasts should be done. The production quality is top-notch and Father Roderick is very listenable.

Kudos on a shining example of the potential for podcasting!
