The Faith of God (Bereishit, Covenant & Conversation 5777)

Author: The Office of Rabbi Sacks
Wed, Oct 26, 2016

There is a deep question at the heart of Jewish faith, and it is very rarely asked. As the Torah opens we see God creating the universe day by day, bringing order out of chaos, life out of inanimate matter, flora and fauna in all their wondrous diversity. At each stage God sees what He has made and declares it good. What then went wrong? How did evil enter the picture, setting in motion the drama of which the Torah – in a sense, the whole of history – is a record?

"Religion is not a threat" - Rabbi Sacks in conversation with Father Raymond de Souza at Cardus

Author: The Office of Rabbi Sacks
Mon, Mar 21, 2016

The world, it seems, might be better off without religion. Witness the horrific violence of the Islamic State, or look across the ages and see crusades, inquisitions, and a European world awash in violence, all done in the name of religion. But what if, as Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks argues, religion is not the problem? What if the very potent idea of "religion" is often hijacked and abused by those who wield it with violence? Religion belongs here. This event by Cardus was recorded on 15th March 2016 at The Glenn Gould Studio in Toronto, Canada. Rabbi Sacks was in conversation with Convivium Editor and National Post Columnist Father Raymond de Souza.

Violence And Law: Ancient And Contemporary Reflections (The 2015 Hildesheimer Lecture)

Author: The Office of Rabbi Sacks
Tue, Feb 16, 2016

In the Hebrew Bible, when God reveals himself, he does so primarily in terms of law. Why is this so? What impact did it have on the nature of Jewish spirituality? And does this have a bearing on the current phenomenon of violence in the name of religion? The Hildesheimer Lecture Series - which takes place in Germany - offers insights and perspectives on Jewish Law, Halacha, with a particular focus on the relationship and co-existence of Halacha with other legal frameworks and systems. The objective of this lecture series is to facilitate the dialogue and discourse necessary to promote tolerance and understanding. A broad range of social scientists, those in public policy and religious leaders, and activists have attended the Hildesheimer Lecture Series. The lecture is a cooperation between the Rabbinerseminar zu Berlin and the Berliner Studien zum J?dischen Recht (Humboldt-Universit?t).

Not in God's Name: Confronting Religious Violence - Rabbi Sacks speaks at The Brookings Institution

Author: The Office of Rabbi Sacks
Thu, Nov 19, 2015

In his new book, "Not in God’s Name: Confronting Religious Violence," Rabbi Jonathan Sacks examines the recent phenomenon of violent extremism by exploring the origins of violence and its relationship to religion. Rabbi Sacks challenges the assertion that religion is an intrinsic source of violence and describes how theology can be central to combating religious violence and extremism. Through analysis of biblical texts tied to the three Abrahamic faiths, Rabbi Sacks illustrates how religiously-inspired violence stems from a critical misreading of these texts. On November 12, Governance Studies at Brookings hosted a discussion addressing Rabbi Sacks’ book and other important issues related to the roots of religious violence. This event is part of the long-running Governing Ideas book series, which is hosted by William A. Galston.

Valuable Lessons Our Children Learn From School (Thought for the Day)

Author: The Office of Rabbi Sacks
Wed, Dec 10, 2014

The following 'Thought for the Day' was broadcast on BBC Radio 4 on Wednesday 10th December 2014. Transcript below. In the past few days both the education secretary Nicky Morgan, and shadow education secretary Tristram Hunt have spoken about how important it is for schools to build character in their pupils: things like determination, resilience, respect, kindness and integrity, things that used to be called virtues. And that makes a whole lot of sense to me. Children at school are being tested on facts more than ever, and we’re in danger of becoming obsessed with SATs, exam results, and league tables. Yet if there’s one thing we all learn on leaving school, it’s that life isn’t an end of year exam. What matters in the long run is your ability to persist, learn from your mistakes, act so as to earn the trust of others, to be able to listen, and praise and admire the work of others, to be loyal, and honest and do what you say you’re going to do, and just keep going. More than once I’ve been sustained by Winston Churchill’s great remark that success is going from failure to failure without loss of enthusiasm. And that other quote, author unknown, that education is what’s left when you’ve forgotten everything you learned at school. What’s left, of course, is character, habits of the heart. It’s a profound biblical insight. In the only verse in the Bible to explain why Abraham became the father of faith, it says God chose him “so that he would direct his children and his household after him to keep the way of the Lord by doing what is right and just.” It was his ability to shape the character of his children. And the great Greek philosophers, Aristotle especially, came to the same conclusion, that ethics is an education in virtue. At times like ours, when the world is changing almost faster than we can bear, and yesterday’s knowledge is made obsolete by today’s, we can’t give our children a map of the future, but we can give them a compass that will allow them to navigate tomorrow, the inner compass we call character. The aptly named American educator Paul Tough, recently assembled the evidence showing that “there is no anti-poverty tool that we can provide for disadvantaged young people that will be more valuable than character strengths,” especially grit, curiosity, self control, and the willingness to keep learning and growing. What matters most in what we learn from school and home is not the knowledge we accumulate but the kind of person we become.

Author: The Office of Rabbi Sacks
Tue, Oct 21, 2014

There are many conflicts around the world at present which claim to be in the name of God, particularly (although not only), the Middle East – such as ISIS in Iraq (with the persecution of Christians and Yazidis in Mosul), the ongoing situation in Gaza (which affects all three faiths of ‘the people of the Book’), and so on. In this public lecture, Rabbi Lord Sacks, as Professor of Law, Ethics & the Bible at King’s College London and Global Distinguished Professor of Judaic Thought at New York University, reflects on how we might challenge this situation and confront this violence, and do so in the name of God.

When people of faith lose the ability to live peaceably together (Thought for the Day)

Author: The Office of Rabbi Sacks
Mon, Jun 23, 2014

On 20th June 2014, Rabbi Sacks delivered 'Thought for the Day' on BBC radio where he spoke about the ongoing tragic situations in Iraq, Syria and elsewhere, analysing them from an historical perspective. Identifying the current conflict as "at least in part, a revival of a long standing conflict within Islam, between Sunni and Shia strands within that great faith", Rabbi Sacks noted that "if we look back across the centuries we’ll find similar conflicts within two other great monotheisms, namely Judaism and Christianity." Rabbi Sacks concluded that: "When conflicts within a faith cost lives within that faith, religion must cease to be the pursuit of power and become again what it was meant to be: God’s call to compassion for the powerless."

On Monday 12th May, Rabbi Sacks delivered a keynote plenary address at the American Jewish Committee's 2014 Global Forum in Washington, DC. For the first time in its long history, Rabbi Sacks said, the Jewish people enjoy a secure and independent Jewish state as well as a free and vibrant Diaspora, but it also faces unprecedented challenges that can and must be addressed. Watch a recording of this major speech to find out what these challenges are, how they can be tackled in the 21st century, and why, most importantly, a renewed recognition that Judaism is "less oy and more joy" would strengthen Jewish determination to persevere and prevail.

The Relevance Of The Bible For Law And Ethics In Society Today

Author: The Office of Rabbi Sacks
Wed, Mar 19, 2014

This inaugural lecture was delivered by Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks, on 13 March 2014 to mark his appointment as Professor of Law, Ethics and the Bible at King’s College London. About the lecture The historian Niall Ferguson quotes the verdict of a member of the Chinese Academy of the Social Sciences, tasked with finding an explanation for why the West overtook China in the sixteenth century and went on to industrial and scientific greatness. At first, he said, we thought it was because you had better guns than we had. Then we thought it was your political system. Next we thought it was your economic system. But for the past twenty years we have had no doubt: it was your religion. What was it about the Judeo-Christian ethic that led the West to develop market economics, democratic politics, human rights and the free society? The lecture will look at seven aspects of biblical ethics, each of which played a part in this development: human dignity, freedom and responsibility; an ethic of guilt rather than shame; the family as the matrix of virtue, love as the basis of ethics and covenant as the basis of society. It will argue that all seven are currently under threat, and that the Bible remains an important voice in the public conversation about ethics and law.

"Vision-Driven Leadership for the 21st Century" - Rabbi Sacks at the JFNA's General Assembly

Author: The Office of Rabbi Sacks
Mon, Nov 11, 2013

On Monday 11 November 2013, Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks spoke to a packed room at the Jewish Federations of North America’s General Assembly gathering in Jerusalem. In his session entitled ‘Vision-Driven Leadership in the 21st Century’, Rabbi Sacks spoke at length about his perspective on the recently published report by the Pew Research Center: “A Portrait of Jewish Americans”. Rabbi Sacks presented a counterintuitive narrative of the Pew Report noting that it ”is not a story of collective failure. It is a story of three very different kinds of success by very different groups of Jews, coming at very different times to America, facing different crises, dreaming different dreams.” These stories of success are: (1) of Jews as part of American society; (2) of Judaism as a culture and ethnicity; and (3) of the growth of an Orthodoxy presence in America. For Rabbi Sacks, the major challenge posed by the report – for American Jewish and Jewish communities around the world – is the need to answer one of the major questions being asked by the next generation of the Jewish people: not how should I be Jewish, but why. Drawing on his experience and the lessons learnt from a similar study undertaken in Britain 20 years ago, Rabbi Sacks offers his perspective on how this can be done.
