Episode 159: How to outsmart your brain for optimal health with Stephan Guyenet

PMR Episode 139 Feature Image

The Hungry Brain is a new book from Stephan Guyenet, an obesity and neuroscience researcher. In his book, Stephan explains all about the complicated processes of the brain and body that leads us to behave the way we do with regards to eating and food, and how this can be problematic when taken into context with our modern world and our modern diet, which is a situation that’s very different from the world our ancestors lived in and the world in which our brains developed.

This book really resonates, we think, because so many of us feel out of control with our eating and don’t understand why we make the food choices we do or why we act the way we do or look the way we do when we so desperately want things to be different. This book is so important because it helps explain in very specific and scientific, yet clear terms, why our brain does what it does and the ways we can work to combat the very intelligent biological processes that in today’s world can make us fat, sick, and keep us caught in a negative cycle with our eating.

We’re really excited about our talk today with Stephan and think it will make us all feel more informed, more empowered, and more able to tackle what, on the surface, seems like a very simple task — eat well and be healthy — but is actually so much more complicated than we think. We really hope you get as much out of this episode as we did.

CLICK HERE for the full transcript.

On today's show we discuss:

  • The main goal and learning points of Stephan’s book, The Hungry Brain.
  • What is meant by the terms “sensory specific satiety” and “habituation”.
  • The progressive ratio test and it is used to test your motivational drive.
  • How the hypothalamus regulates body fat and how your set point can change with time.
  • How to transition to a diet that contains less hyper palatable foods.
  • Stephan’s typical diet on a day-to-day basis.
  • How sensory queues trigger the motivational circuits in our brains towards certain foods.
  • His thoughts on the whole abstainer versus moderator debate.
  • The effect that eating at all times of day has on your ability to lose weight.
  • How uncontrolled stress can effect our food intake behaviors.
  • Stephan’s top tips and strategies for tricking the brain to feel fuller on fewer calories.

“There are a lot of brain functions that we are not aware of and not in control of.” — @whsource [0:14:43.1]

“There is no other diet that is better at fattening rodents than palatable human foods.” — @whsource [0:24:30.1]

Is Milk Paleo? Does it matter? Is milk good for you? For those of us willing to eat the flesh and guts of many animals, is it really that much of a stretch to consume dairy products too? These are questions that may be a source of a lot of debate. However, considering a pretty big theme in nutrition these days, even in our ancestral health and nutrition, is about personalizing your diet with foods that make you feel and perform your best, some of you may still be into milk or at least willing to explore your options.

On the podcast today we are talking with Walid from Desert Farms, a company that sells pasture raised grass fed camel products in the US such as milk, meat, and even skin care. He gives us the low down on why camel milk is different and in his opinion, superior to cow’s milk. He talks about how his camels are raised and we also get into the different ways that camel products can be used like in chocolate and beauty products. We also talk about hump fat, so definitely tune to learn all about it.

CLICK HERE for the full transcript.

On today's show we discuss:

  • How Walid first had the idea to introduce Camel products to the US.
  • What makes camel milk different from cow’s milk and how they are inter-linked.
  • The difference between pasteurized and raw milk, and the fears that consumers face.
  • How hump fat will be their first meat line product.
  • The properties in camel milk that are helping people heal themselves.
  • What is to come for Desert Farms in the near future.

“For everyone that basically has missed their dairy, their real milk, this is a perfect alternative for them.” — @WalidAbdulWahb [0:14:43.1]

“Supplementing camel’s milk on a Paleo or elimination diet helps significantly with people with autoimmunity..” — @WalidAbdulWahb [0:18:02.1]

OUR MISSION
To restore our health, strength and vitality by providing history's healthiest whole food nutrients to the modern world.

AncientNutrition.com

We’re talking to Nora Gedgaudas on the podcast today. Many of you are probably already familiar with her name. She is a Paleo expert with a number of bestselling books like Primal Body, Primal Mind and Rethinking Fatigue. Nora is a board certified nutritional consultant and clinical neuro feedback specialist with the practice in Portland, Oregon. She is a speaker and educator with her own podcast as well as being a regular at Paleo f(x). Nora has a new book out called Primal Fat Burner that talks about a fat based ancestral diet that helps you live longer and be leaner and healthier.

Now, while the term ketogenic diet is probably familiar to many of you, this book covers topics that even we did not know. In today’s episode, we get into the biological basis for this type of eating and how it can benefit everyone from high level athletes to those dealing with a whole host of health issues, and everyone in between. Nora schools us on things like how much protein you should actually be eating. Spoiler alert, it’s probably pretty different than you think. So let’s get right into it, and learn more about Nora.

CLICK HERE for the full transcript

In our conversation we discuss:

  • How Nora discovered a fat rich diet while observing wolves in the tundra.
  • What sparked her to question our modern day diets from observing others.
  • Why some people may need to approach the ketogenic lifestyle differently than others.
  • Why being in a fat based ketogenic diet requires a protein sparing approach.
  • If the ketegenic diet has different implications for women.
  • Why a dependence on glucose is the truly unnatural form of metabolism.
  • Why our inability to eat meat is an indication of how far removed we are from our natural environment.
  • Why there are some vital components that cannot be substituted by a plant-base diet.
  • The strategies that can help you transition gradually into a ketogenic diet.

“The fact of the matter is that a fat based ketogenic approach is extremely protein sparing.” — @NoraGedgaudas [0:16:40.1]

“Ultimately what you want to do, the name of the game is making your own ketones by eliminating carbs.” — @NoraGedgaudas [0:48:29.1]

Everyone’s talking about Four Sigmatic; Time Magazine, Vogue, Forbes, even the New York Times. This super food company’s goal is to popularize medicinal mushrooms by incorporating them in popular products like coffee and hot coco. Basically, they’re nicely tricking us into eating what’s good for us already. Their products launched in the US market in 2015 and are now sold in more than 25 countries.

Today’s interview is with the founder Tero Isokauppila, president of Four Sigmatic. Tero grew up in a farm in Finland where he foraged for mushrooms and learned about natural foods from an early age and he later got a degree in chemistry and a certificate in plant based nutrition from Cornel University. He’s an authority on super foods and natural health and he was chosen as one of the world’s top 50 food activists by the Academy of Culinary Nutrition. So if you’re into food and bio hacking, definitely stay tuned. You’ll never look at mushrooms the same way again.

CLICK HERE for the full transcript

In our conversation we discuss:

  • The products Four Sigmatic offers and what they do for people.
  • The unique properties of each type of mushroom used in Four Stigmatic’s products.
  • The origins of medicinal mushrooms and their ideal growing environments.
  • Why it is important to understand where your food comes from, even with mushrooms/fungi.
  • What mycotoxins and aflatoxins are and why mushroom companies need to be aware of them.

  • What needs to be done in the industry to educate people on the benefits of medical mushrooms.
  • The possible benefits medicinal mushrooms have for treating cancer in patients.
  • The recommended dose for the average person or general cross-fitter.
  • Tero’s suggestion for what product to try first if you are just starting out with mushrooms.

“Medicinal mushrooms are extremophiles so they grow in extreme climates.” —  Tero Isokauppila [0:13:34.8]

“The promise of some compounds in mushrooms having antiviral and anti-tumor properties is very fascinating.” —  Tero Isokauppila  [0:35:24.0]

I think many of us Paleo folks have already learned that one of the biggest challenges in being healthy is that our modern world seems stacked against us and at odds with our biological wiring. Our world, which we are very lucky to inhabit, encourages us to eat processed unhealthy food, encourages us to sit and watch TV rather than walk and play, and to scroll on our phone all night rather than sleep.

The knowledge of this modern world with all its amazing technology and comfort is also the source of much of our current physical and mental challenges, but that isn’t an excuse to let go and be as sedentary and unhealthy as possible. Instead, this information can help to empower us to be mindful of our choices and educate ourselves about better ways to live. Ways that more closely aligned with what makes each of us feel good and healthy. Today on the podcast, Robb Wolf is here to discuss his new book, Wired to Eat. Robb is one of the original leaders of the Paleo movement, he is a former research biochemist, a health expert, and bestselling author of The Paleo Solution.

In today’s episode, we talk about why most diets fail and why another diet is not the answer. We dive into rewiring our bodies, a lot about carbs, and we also get into the ketogenic diet. I also bug him about his own personal training and eating routines. Robb is a ridiculously smart human being and he is also super down to earth and friendly. So I really hope you enjoy this interview as much as I did.

CLICK HERE for the full transcript

In our conversation we discuss:

  • Robb’s inspiration to write his new book, and how he planned to change lives.
  • How to reframe and change your mindset of guilt-based thinking about food.
  • Why it is important that our human tendencies are rewarded for movement towards favorable outcomes.
  • The carb test and how it can help determine which carbs are best suited for you.
  • The ketogenic diet, the caveats, and who it is best suited for.
  • The use of exogenous ketones and Robb’s thoughts on their use overall.
  • How to seamlessly cater for a family with different eating requirements.
  • His eating and exercise routines, and what they typically look like.

“Continually eating poor food choices could get us sick; it could stick us in an early grave.” — @robbwolf [0:16:50.0]

“You can get buried under data that gives you no actionable insights.” — @robbwolf [0:59:06.0]

The internet is often seen as the cause of and solution to all of life’s problems. Wi-Fi is basically everywhere these days and it is pretty convenient. Most people think it's a good thing, but wireless radiation can also be harmful, especially to young people and those who are sensitive to it. Educating ourselves about the pros and cons of our increasingly wireless world is critical, and today’s guest is going to help us with that.  Alison Main is a freelance writer who focuses on environmental health and illness, wireless radiation, electromagnetic safety, chemical safety, and technology addiction. She’s also a regular contributor to Paleo Magazine. In our chat today, Alison explains exactly what EMF and wireless radiation is and why it can be harmful. She talks about the sneaky ways it can show up in our lives and most importantly, she provides easy ways we can reduce our exposure to wireless radiation right away, while also easing off on that pesky technology addiction that many of us are guilty of. So it’s time to sit back, relax, power down, and listen to our chat with Alison Main.

Paleo Radio Bites 65 - Steve Sashen: The Barefoot Maestro of Xero Shoes

Mon, Feb 20, 2017

PMR Bites Feature Image

Steve Sashen has always been an energetic, athletic, and entrepreneurial guy. In high school he was an all-american sprinter, and while studying film in college, he did stand up comedy on the side. After graduating with his masters in film, he went on to develop word processing software for script-writers that became industry standard.

Steve stayed active throughout his life, trying things like circus acrobatics and competitive jump roping, but nothing really scratched his itch until he rediscovered his passion for running, and specifically sprinting. A friend introduced him to the world of Masters Track and Field, and for a time, he was having the time of his life.

Eventually, a string of devastating injuries forced Steve to pump the brakes, and while searching for a solution he found himself going on a completely bare foot run with the Boulder Colorado barefoot running club. As the miles ticked by, Steve explored the information his shoe-free feet provided, and in doing so, altered his gait and mechanics such that he didn't even realize that he had run farther than he ever had in his life.

That very first barefoot run lit a spark that changed the course of Steve's life forever and on today's Paleo Radio Bite, we discuss how.

HealthyHumanLife.com

It's in your pocket, in your ears, and it's even in the very air you breathe, but we're not talking about a chemical or biological organism, we're talking about EMF.

EMF is an acronym for Electric and Magnetic Fields. Naturally occurring EMF fields are generated by the earth and the sun, and as such, humans have been exposed to these fields since before we were humans. As with many things however, human ingenuity and innovation has led to the development of technologies that are changing the natural EMF environment.

Power lines, cell phones, computers, wifi routers, microwave ovens, and numerous other electronic devices generate evolutionarily novel EMF fields, and the question we must ask is whether or not these new sources of EMF cause long term harm and contribute to disease.

According to the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, "the few studies that have been conducted on adults show no evidence of a link between EMF exposure and adult cancers, such as leukemia, brain cancer, and breast cancer." They assert that the frequency of EMF emitted by household appliances is "non ionizing" and therefore relatively benign as opposed to the "ionizing" radiation of x-rays and gamma rays that have well documented harmful effects. Despite these assertions however, there are many anecdotal accounts of health issues related to low frequency EMF exposure.

On today's show, we talk to a former Silicon Valley engineer named Jeromy Johnson who experienced a health crisis after wireless "smart" electrical meters were installed below his San Francisco home. Jeromy's "wireless wake up call" has led him to become an electrical health advocate and he believes that managing our exposure to EMF will become an increasingly essential ancestral health strategy.

In our conversation we discuss:

  • The unforeseen consequences of "the internet of things".
  • The symptoms of EMF exposure.
  • The potential long term effects on reproductive health and cancer risk that EMF presents.
  • Tips for reducing your exposure to EMF.
  • Digital detoxes.
  • How to use technology safely.
  • Why he decided to speak up about his experiences with an EMF related illness.
  • What it was like to tell 2000 technology enthusiasts at TEDx that there might be a downside to inundating our environment and our bodies with EMF.

Paleo Radio Bites 64 - Exploring the Potato Hack with Tim Steele

Mon, Feb 06, 2017

PMR Bites Feature Image

Digestive issues like gastroesophageal reflux (GERD), irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), and small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) affect millions of people and cost billions of dollars in lost work and health care expenses each year.

In the search for relief, afflicted individuals often suffer through invasive colonoscopies, dangerous immune suppressing drugs, and even surgical removal of their colon, but what if the the answer was as simple as only eating potatoes for just a few days?

This might sound ridiculous, but according to Tim Steele, author of The Potato Hack, a short-term mono-diet of plainly cooked potatoes can strengthen your immune system, improve sleep, and even lead to weight loss by feeding beneficial gut bacteria, combating inflammation, and resetting your relationship to food.

Tim isn't even the first person to make these claims, he got the idea for a potato fast after reading about an 1849 diet prescribed to people who were "living too luxuriously" and who became overweight and "dyspeptic" as a result. More recently, both the magician Penn Jillette, as well as an Australian man named Andrew Taylor, have credited potato fasts for helping them to lose over 100lbs each.

On today's Paleo Radio Bite, we phone in to Tim at his home in North Pole, Alaska, to find out more about his book The Potato Hack and how the much maligned tuber might be a health food after all.

OUR MISSION
Healthy Human is more than just a hydration company, we are a lifestyle firmly planted in the healthy living space.

According to Zevia CEO Paddy Spence, fighting for smarter food options for consumers against large, established competitors is the riskiest career move he ever made, but he's not one to shy away from a fight, or to let fear of failure prevent him from taking a risk.

Growing up with a single mom who struggled to make ends meat, but always made a point to feed her kids the best food she could buy, Paddy knew that he wasn't going to get any handouts and any success he had would come from dedication and hard work.

He studied Greek and Latin in high school and used his unique specialization to get the interest of the college administrators at Harvard where he paid his way by delivering boxes for UPS. After graduating from Harvard Business School with his MBA, he went on to work for companies like Kashi, and Levlad, a personal care manufacturer that makes natural shampoos and soaps. He also founded SPINS, a health and wellness marketing firm.

While working at Levlad, Paddy came across a stevia sweetened soda called Zevia, and was inspired to find out more about the company. He ended up buying the the small startup and has since led Zevia to over $100 million dollars in annual revenue, and that's with products that are artificial color free, artificial flavor free, corn syrup free, GMO free and naturally sweetened.

On today's show, we are joined by Paddy Spence to discuss his career, his life, and how he's trying to revolutionize the diet soda industry.

Paleo Radio Bites 63 - From Master Chef to Meatme with Chef Trevor Bird

Mon, Jan 23, 2017

PMR Bites Feature Image

Chef Trevor Bird was born and raised in Montreal, Canada and began cutting his culinary teeth when we was only a teenager. His career path wound through some of Canada's best restaurants, and eventually landed him a spot on season 2 of Top Chef Canada. Although he didn't win the competition, he did come in second place, and used the experience, and a partnership with fellow contestant Curtis Luk, to open his own restaurant, a farm-to-table focused eatery named Fable Kitchen and Diner. He is now one of Canada's most ardent real food advocates and his passion for feeding people well has now manifested in his latest project, an online meat co-op called MeatMe.co

Meatme connects customers to a growing network of Canadian farmers who raise their animals on natural pasture and in a honest and humane way. Qualifying farms do not use hormones, antibiotics, or any chemicals whatsoever and are also required to provide ample living space, natural and GMO free feed, and high standards of animal welfare.

On the MeatMe.co site, you can actually pick the exact animal you want to buy a share of, such as "Heifer no. 347 | Black Angus", "Hog no. 188 | Nut fed Berkshire", and "Lamb no. 874 | Hair bred". Additionally, Chef Trevor provides innovative and delicious recipes with each order, and he joins us on our show today to tell us more about his culinary career and the Meatme.co difference.

PMR #148 - Deep Nutrition with Dr. Cate Shanahan

Episode Sponsor Logo: Essentia Mattress

OUR MISSION
Healthy Human is more than just a hydration company, we are a lifestyle firmly planted in the healthy living space.

HealthyHumanLife.com

We've talked to many people who have dealt with serious health conditions, and many of them have been frustrated or stymied by the conventional medical system and the care they've received from doctors, but what happens if you are the patient and the doctor? This is the situation Dr. Cate Shanahan found herself in when she experienced a mysterious and undiagnosable pain in her knee that made it difficult for her to walk and almost cost her her job.

After trying multiple treatments and experiencing numerous dead ends, she came across a book called Spontaneous Healing by Dr. Andrew Weil, which, in her words, "opened a crack in the darkness." In Spontaneous Healing, Dr. Cate learned about the significance of omega three fatty acids and it set her on a path to uncover the "dark calories" that have infiltrated our food supply and how traditional fats, and an ancestral diet in general, can provide a way out of many modern diseases. She was inspired to write her ideas down, and these notes provided the basis for her best-selling book Deep Nutrition that she wrote along with her husband Luke.

Deep Nutrition was originally released back in 2008, and since then, she has been busy building her medical practice, speaking at conferences across the country, and working as a dietary consultant for the LA Lakers. Obviously she's learned a lot in the process and is now taking those lessons and using them to revise, update, and expand her book.

The updated version of Dr. Cate's Deep Nutrition is now available, and on today's show, we discuss:

  • The dangers of intergenerational malnutrition.
  • The superfood she used to help Kobe Bryant recover 100% faster from an ankle injury.
  • Why oxidative stress is the ultimate disease maker.
  • How free radicals can create an explosion of inflammation in the body.
  • Why good fats taste better.
  • The right questions to ask when you go to a restaurant.
  • How she gets professional basketball players to eat healthy.

Based in Northern California, Jambo Superfoods has made waves in the Paleo community and beyond by bringing the world's first Paleo certified cannabis edible to the marijuana marketplace.

Earlier this year, we interviewed the founders of Jambo, Shannon Puma Drake and Johg Ananda, and we discussed their personal and professional lives, it was an enlightening conversation to be sure, but before we go any further we’d like to warn anyone who doesn't want to hear adults talk about pot that they might want want to skip today's show, alternately, if you have kids in the car and you'd rather not have "that" conversation with them, now would be a good time to check out just about any other episode of Paleo Magazine Radio.

If you're still here however, we’re going to assume that you're game to get into this discussion, and because it's a two part interview that spans an entire two hours, we’re going to cut right to the chase.

In part one, we’ll be talking to Shannon about:

  • Her former career as a fashion marketer.
  • What led to her starting her first company, Give me the Dirt.
  • How she first learned about Paleo from a biological anthropology professor.
  • The impact of witnessing her father's battle with lung cancer.
  • Overcoming chronic migraines.
  • Using cannabis recreationally, medically, and as a tool for personal development.
  • Resurrecting the wisdom of the ancients.
  • Using breathwork to master your body.
  • How she found her her inner jungle cat through plant medicine.

We will have a short intermission before getting into our second interview with Johg Ananda where we discuss:

  • Growing up in Florida.
  • Working for his dad's plumbing company.
  • Starting a startup, failing, and starting again.
  • How he turned an idea into a business in single weekend.
  • Why asking yourself the question "can you sell it?" is more important for an entrepreneur than "can you make it".
  • Why Tim Ferriss' 4-hour work week worked, but took more time, money, and energy, than Johg had ever imagined.
  • The irony of medical cannabis products that are full of sugar and processed ingredients.
  • How he is navigating his way through the complex web of marijuana laws and regulations in order to bring value to the lives of his customers, employees, and himself.

Breaking Bread with Dr. John Douillard - PMR #145

OUR MISSION

The fact that gluten is bad is one of the pillars of Paleo and any Paleo person worth their sea salt knows that hunter gatherers didn't eat grains and that of all the grains, gluten containing ones, like wheat and rye, are the worst.

But what if grain brain and wheat belly got it wrong? What if Paleo man did consume cereal grasses and what if there were actually benefits to eating grains?

If you're feeling skeptical right now, we don't blame you, when our Editor in Chief Cain Credicott forwarded the contact information for Dr. John Douillard, author of Eat Wheat, we thought that this had to be a hoax, but after talking to Dr. John, we realized that his approach towards consuming grains has a lot more in common with Paleo than we initially thought, and that it might not be a crazy idea after all.

In our conversation we discuss:

  • The 400 billion pounds of toxic chemicals that might be the root cause of our digestive health issues.
  • How to reboot your digestive system.
  • How digestive irritants like lectins may actually help to detoxify your digestive system.
  • The right time of year to eat wheat.
  • Which ancient grains are the best.
  • What you can do to bring bread back into your life without compromising your health.

Paleo Radio Bites 59 - Organizing Physicians for Ancestral Health with Dr. Polina Sayess

Mon, Nov 28, 2016

PMR Bites Feature Image

When Doctor Polina Sayess attended the 2012 Ancestral Health Symposium in Boston Massachusetts, she immediately wondered how many other physicians were in attendance.

She reached out to the event organizers who helped set up an informal meet and greet outside the conference hall and in that moment, the Physicians for Ancestral Health organization was formed.

The group, made up of practicing physicians, medical students, and residents from a wide range of specialties, share information online through their Physicians for Ancestral Health Facebook group and in person at their very own annual conference.

This year's event will be held Thursday, January 19th through Saturday, January 21st in Miami Florida, and Tony will be there covering the show for Paleo Magazine as well as presenting on the subject of media and content creation for Health professionals.

On today's Paleo Radio Bite, we talk to Dr. Sayess about:

  • Her experiences working as a family physician.
  • How Ancestral Health has informed her practice.

Unlocking Leaky Gut with Dr. Chad Larson - PMR #144

PMR Episode 144 Feature Image

Episode Sponsor
Ancient Nutrition

OUR MISSION
To restore our health, strength and vitality by providing history's healthiest whole food nutrients to the modern world.

AncientNutrition.com

It is thought that Hippocrates, the father of modern medicine once said that "all disease begins in the gut" and while we can't exactly prove that Hippocrates actually said that, modern science has begun to discover that whoever said it was right!

When we take in food, or the evolutionarily novel food-like substances sold at most restaurants and grocery stores, an entire cascade of reactions, absorptions, and outcomes occur. If we are eating biologically appropriate foods, our body will break then down, separate essential nutrients, feed the microbiome, nourish, rebuild, and repair our body, and eventually eliminate the waste products. But, If we go for the food-like substances,we disrupt vital tissues, irritate the immune system, and ultimately create disease.

On today's episode of Paleo Magazine Radio, we have an incredible conversation with someone who works on the front lines of this battle between our bodies and the ersatz foodstuffs that make up much of our diet, his name is Dr. Chad Larson and he's a trained chiropractor who also works for Cyrex labs, a clinical testing laboratory that provides high quality testing services for clinicians.

Cyrex labs assays can help detect leaky gut, gluten and other protein sensitivities, autoimmune and pathogen reactivity, and even blood-brain barrier permeability.

In this conversation Tony and Dr. Chad discuss:

  • Gut biopsies.
  • Non celiac gluten sensitivity.
  • The limits of conventional care.
  • The dangers of immunosuppressive drugs.
  • How to talk to your doctor.
  • How lifestyle factors like nutrition, alcohol, and stress impact gut health.

Paleo Radio Bites 58 - Moving Your Body with Jenn Pilotti

Fri, Nov 11, 2016

PMR Bites Feature Image

In the Outside Magazine article "The Workout Time Forgot", world-renowned movement expert Erwan Le Corre said that "We live like zoo animals!" and that we are essentially wild creatures ill-suited to desk jobs and processed foods.

He says that "We have become divorced from nature, trapped in colorless boxes,"and that "We have lost our adaptability, and it's threatening our health and longevity."

We all spend more than enough time in boxes, sedentary, motionless, but even when we know the benefit of getting up, going outside, and moving our bodies, getting out of the box can be difficult and potentially fraught if you are stiff, tight, imbalanced, and out of shape.

This is where Personal trainers, or more specifically, movement coaches come in.

On today's Paleo Radio Bite we talk to movement coach Jenn Pilotti, owner of a private training studio in Carmel, California.

In our conversation we discuss:

  • Her favorite functional movements.
  • Overcoming movement fears.
  • The difference between kick-ups, frogger's, and other handstand progressions.
  • and much more.

Imagine that you haven't been feeling well. Imagine that you go to the doctor, and after they review your symptoms they tell you that there is some very bad news. Imagine that you are told that you have an incurable illness.

What do you do?

Frankly, we don't think there is any "right" response to this kind of news. It's presumptuous and disrespectful to assume that we know what is good and right for someone else. Nevertheless, it’s hard not to be inspired by stories that suggest we have a choice.

A choice to give in or fight on

A choice to face darkness in the search of light

A choice to live, or die.

After being diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis, an autoimmune condition in which the immune system attacks nerve cells causing pain and other debilitating symptoms, Natalie Shultz was ready to make her choice, and in our conversation we discuss:

  • How she discovered that she had MS.
  • What MS is, what causes it, and how it can be controlled.
  • The limitations of conventional treatment options.
  • How the Wahl's protocol changed her life.
  • Why cheating on her diet isn't an option and how she channeled her desire to help others into the creation of the world's healthiest cups and water bottles.

Paleo Radio Bites 57 - Transforming with Michael Tamez

Mon, Oct 31, 2016

PMR Bites Feature Image

Life might give us lemons, but we don't always get to making lemonade right away. This is because, unlike lemonade, adding sugar to bitter events only provides a temporary salve with long term consequences.

This was the case for Michael Tamez, who after a devastating series of personal tragedies found that his coping mechanism of eating junk food caused him to rapidly become overweight and gave him severe sleep apnea, high blood pressure, and gum disease too.

On today's Paleo Radio Bite, we talk to Michael about how he turned all of this around and transformed the dysfunctional relationship he had to food, and transformed his lifestyle, health, and body in the process.

One thing we've noticed working in the health and wellness industry is that people often assume that we've always had it all together.

They assume we've always eaten Paleo, they assume we've always worked out, and they assume that we never struggled with staying fit. Of course, nothing could be further from the truth. We do this work because of the challenges we faced, not because we lacked them.

That's why it was so exciting to finally talk to Melissa Joulwan. Fashionable, fit, and successful, Mel looks like she's always "had it all together" too, but as you'll soon find out, her early struggles, numerous as they were, were the very things that forged her into the person she is today.

In our conversation we discuss:

  • Overcoming klutziness
  • Having something to prove
  • The benefits of setting big, audacious, physical goals
  • The psychology of Roller Derby
  • The success secret athletes don't often share
  • Her new cookbook, Well Fed Weeknights, which will teach you how to put together fantastic meals in 45 minutes or less

Do you ever feel like you're doing all the right things but you're still not getting results?

Do you love knowing obscure facts and figures?

Do you have a tendency for Googling well past your bedtime?

Do you regularly win at trivia night?

You might have a "Thirsty Brain" and Matt McCary might have the cure.

Matt is widely known in the Paleo community as one half of the dynamic Paleo Parent's duo, but after writing multiple best-selling books, creating an uber popular blog, and producing blockbuster podcasts, he and his wife Stacy decided they wanted to get Real.

Their new website, RealEverything.com, is dedicated to real talk, real food, and real life, and for Matt, this meant exploring his boundless search for knowledge. Matt's new podcast, Thirsty Brain with Matt McCary, explores everything from the history of zombies and Julius Caesar to medieval surgical masks and the sleeping habits of ducks.

On today's episode of PMR, Matt joins us for a Paleo-centric preview of Thirsty Brain where we dive deep into the controversial question, "How long did cavemen actually live?"

In our conversation we discuss:

  • The important differences between lifespan and life expectancy
  • What all-cause mortality means
  • Why wheat made us shorter
  • How our modern lives have been extended despite our crappy diets
  • and the reasons why our hunter gatherer ancestors really did die young, but spoiler alert, it had nothing to do with diet.

We usually start this show talking about our guests, but before we do that, Tony has a story to share, about himself, that you might not know.

It's a story that starts almost twenty years ago, back to the summer of 1998, the summer before Tony started his freshman year of high school. It was only a few weeks before the start of the school year, and, as is often the case, he had to get a physical before he could complete the enrollment process.

"During the exam, the doctor noticed a lump on my throat and after further investigation, it was determined that I had a potentially cancerous cyst on my thyroid gland. I was only 14 at the time, so I really had no idea what was going on but nevertheless it was decided between my doctor and parents that a partial thyroidectomy to remove the half of my thyroid gland that had the cyst on it, was the ideal course of treatment. I don't remember being scared as much as I felt like I was on a ride that I had no control over. The train had left the station and I was a passenger who had no choice but to go on to the next stop.

I remember going into the hospital and being prepped for surgery, getting the anesthesia, and then everything going black. The next thing I knew I was awake, but I couldn't lift my head and everything above my shoulders was in pain. What felt like seconds to me was actually more than five hours, during which the doctors had my throat completely opened up while they debated what to do.

When they initially opened me up, they sampled a piece of the cyst, but it didn't check out with any known cancers. This uncertainty led to fear and this fear led to them deciding that instead of removing half my thyroid gland, they would remove the whole thing. As lab tests would later prove, I did not in fact have cancer, but once your thyroid gland is gone, it doesn't come back and from that moment on my life was dependent on thyroid replacement medication.

The medication I was given is one of the most commonly prescribed medications in America, it goes by the generic name levothyroxine, or the brand name Synthroid. Every six months I would get blood tests, visit my endocrinologist, and get my prescription renewed. They always tested for TSH, thyroid stimulating hormone, a signaling hormone produced by the pituitary gland that supposedly indicates whether you have too little, too much, or just the right amount of thyroid hormone in your body.

As it was, my TSH levels were on a perpetual roller coaster, and my Synthroid dosage was constantly being changed. I had bags under my eyes, would fall asleep in the middle of the day, and never felt really energetic, but my TSH levels were good and so I soldiered on.

I started working out, began to eat healthy, got into the fitness business, and began my career, always assuming that everyone felt the way that I did. But, when I cured my chronic knee pain with barefoot running and resolved years of binge eating with a paleo diet I started to question the conventional wisdom. I started to wonder what was really going on with my thyroid and began to investigate whether or not synthroid was the best way to treat it.

As I looked deeper into the issue, I discovered that there were entire websites, books, and communities of people online who had many of the issues I did. I learned that natural thyroid replacement made from desiccated pig thyroids used to be the gold standard, but when synthetic thyroid, ie synthroid, was discovered and marketed, the pharmaceutical company that made synthroid went on a mission to discredit natural thyroid replacement, convincing doctors that it was unreliable, inconsistent, and unsafe.

With this knowledge, I demanded that my doctor switch me to a modern natural thyroid replacement called Armour thyroid. He wasn't an endocrinologist and didn't really seem to care too much about what I did, so he wrote me the prescription without resistance and I got my natural thryoid hormone.

On Armour thyroid I began to come back to life again. The bags under my eyes began to go away, the mid afternoon crashes disappeared, and I realized that I didn't have to do cardio for hours a day to maintain my weight.

The realization slowly began to creep into my brain that for all those years I had been a victim and didn't even know it. I wasn't a victim of any single person, doctor, or drug, I was the victim of an entire system that puts profits before people. That's why I was so excited to meet Elle Russ."

Elle found out who Tony was through his work with Paleo Magazine and she reached out to tell us about a book she was working on that dove into the subject of thryoid health, but from a Paleo perspective. She is a thyroid health advocate who had herself suffered from years of medical mismanagement and she too had to learn the hard way.

We had a great conversation about the proper ways to dose natural thryoid hormone the nuances of t3 and t4, and how TSH alone is not a good indicator of thryoid function. We didn't record this conversation, but when Elle's book, the Paleo Thyroid Solution, was finished, we invited her to come on to Paleo Magazine Radio to share her story with you. Little did we realize that she was about to change Tony’s life in a very significant way, but we’ll let you listen to find out how.

Paleo Radio Bites 54 - The Primal Pickle Jamie Brazie

Mon, Sep 19, 2016

PMR Bites Feature Image

We first saw Jamie Lynn Brazie on Instagram. At the time, Tony was editing Paleo Fitness Magazine (all 6 issues are now available in an ebook compendium btw) and we were promoting the #paleofitnessarmy hashtag. We occasionally searched the hashtag to see what people were posting and on this particular day one of Jamie's photos came up.

She was sitting on the beach in the lotus position, and as a lifelong Floridian, Tony immediately recognized the scenery. They both hailed from a similar part of the state, so when it came time to scout for a cover model for our fourth issue, Tony thought it would be cool to feature a local girl.

Jamie and her husband are now living out in the Pacific Northwest, but she is still bringing that Florida sunshine and sharing the message of health out west.

After the Ancestral Health Symposium ended, one of the show organizers, J. Brett Smith approached us and said he had organized an impromptu meeting outside the conference hall and he wanted us to bring the audio recorder because what was about to be said was going to rock the Paleo world.

Brett assured us that the assembled group represented a rare gathering of thinkers on the subject of plants. Despite the conventional wisdom that we need to eat a wide variety of fruits and vegetables, this group's controversial position is that fruit's and vegetables are overrated, unnecessary, and maybe even toxic!

According to the eclectic group of PhDs, authors, self-experimenters, and more, plants have been engaging in chemical warfare, which of course sounds like dirty tactics until you consider that they lack the ability to scurry away or fight back with tooth and claw like animals do. So, without these things they've had to develop an entire arsenal of insidious chemicals to ward off predators like us.

We've never really questioned the benefits of eating fruits and vegetables but the evidence presented by this panel was compelling and certainly dims the health halo surrounding plant based diets.

Paleo Radio Bites 53 - EPIC AHS Interview with Dr Terry Wahls, Darryl Edwards, and Chris Masterjohn PhD

Fri, Sep 02, 2016

PMR Bites Feature Image

Today we're continuing our coverage of the 2016 Ancestral Health Symposium with a conversation with Chris Masterjohn of the Daily Lipid, Darryl Edwards, the Fitness Explorer, and Dr. Terry Wahls, creator of the Wahls protocol.

This interview was originally featured as a Facebook live video on the Ancestral Health Foundation's Facebook page, but we wanted to make sure that you, our dedicated PMR audience, got a chance to listen in as well. And since we weren't about to cut any of these interviewees off, today's show is a bit longer than a typical Paleo Radio Bite, so we'll get right to the chase.

It's not often you get three heavy hitters like this all in one show, and I think you're going to learn a lot from hearing what they have to say. Enjoy.

In our conversation we cover a broad range of questions, like:

  • What is Ancestral health?
  • What's the best dietary sources of vitamin K?
  • And whether or not there are any studies to back up our intuitions about organic produce and grass fed meat.

Last week on the podcast you heard Tony's 2016 Ancestral Health Symposium talk, "Get Up Stand Up: A brief history of sedentarism and why movement is good medicine," and if you didn't, we encourage you to go back and check it out.

If you did, we hope it motivated you to get up out of your chair, to move around, and to start getting healthier by giving your body more of the movement nutrients that it needs. But, as passionate as we are about exercise, we know that it is only one piece of the Paleo, Ancestral health puzzle.

That's why we were so pleased to be able to attend AHS this year and to see such diversity in the talks and poster presentations which covered everything from mind-controlling microbes to adrenal fatigue, and everything in between.

We left the conference feeling informed and inspired, but also a little sad because coming home meant leaving the amazing AHS tribe of attendees, presenters, vendors, and volunteers behind.

We really can't think of a better group of people to spend a weekend with and think it's the people that really make these events so special. And to celebrate those people, we made sure to record conversations with as many of them as we could.

On Today's episode of Paleo Magazine Radio:

  • We share an uber ride from Denver International Airport into Boulder with AHS co-founder Aaron Blaisdell.
  • We dive deep into conversations on the show floor.
  • We stop by the movement sessions
  • We even take some time to appreciate the beautiful scenery in Boulder, Colorado.

PRB 52 - Get Up Stand Up, A Brief History of Sedentarism and Why Movement is Good Medicine

Thu, Aug 18, 2016

PMR Bites Feature Image

Tony just got back from the 2016 Ancestral Health Society symposium and has some great audio for you.

During the conference, which was held on the beautiful, Rocky Mountain surrounded, University of Colorado Boulder Campus, Tony recorded a Facebook Live conversation with Dr. Terry Wahls, Chris Masterjohn, and Darryl Edwards. He got a one on one interview with the Paleo Mom Dr. Sarah Ballantyne that reveals her latest fitness hack and also listened in as a group of Plant experts called into question one of the bedrock beliefs of Paleo. And, throughout the conference, captured numerous mini-interviews with a diversity of entrepreneurs, academics, and medical specialists that will give you a chance to really experience what it's like at AHS.

Getting all this audio together is going to require a little bit of editing, so we're going to kick things off with Tony's Ancestral Health Symposium presentation "Get Up, Stand Up: A Brief History of Sedentarism and Why Movement is Good Medicine."

In "Get Up, Stand Up", Tony shares his own personal experience with chronic low back pain, and how it opened his eyes to the dangers of sitting down. If you are interested in finding out the relationship between our movement environment and chronic disease, when chairs were invented, and how sitting might not be the new smoking, but it might be the new McDonald's, stand up, or even better, walk, and give it a listen.

Paleo Radio Bites 51 - Mixing up Paleo Preworkouts with Harrison Levy of Rootz Nutrition

Thu, Aug 04, 2016

PMR Bites Feature Image

Harrison Levy was a fan of the Paleo lifestyle, and ate, moved, and lived as closely as he could to Paleo principles. However, there was one area of his life that avoided the ancestral health approach.

He was an avid exerciser and would routinely take pre-workout supplements prior to lifting weights. The boost of energy was welcome, but the artificial colors, flavors, and ingredients were not. In a fit of inspiration, Harrison decided that he could do it better, and went to work creating his own, all-natural, paleo friendly pre-workout.

On today's Paleo Radio bite, we talk to Harrison about this initial moment of inspiration, what his original recipe looked like, and how he grew his company with Instagram.

OUR MISSION
To restore our health, strength and vitality by providing history's healthiest whole food nutrients to the modern world.

AncientNutrition.com

Most of us spend our days in front of computers, on the phone, or in our cars, working, stressing, succeeding, and striving all while remaining seated and stationary.

This wouldn't be a problem if our ancestors were a sedentary species like pine trees, but unfortunately for us, our lineage comes from a dynamic group of animals who made their way through the world by employing a broad scope of movement patterns. Squatting, lunging, gripping, hanging, pressing, pulling, twisting, and sprinting, we are meant to be on the move and our biological machinery demands more than just a daily dose of gym time. To truly thrive, we need to reintroduce movement into our daily lives.

Today's show is part one of a two part series dedicated to the idea that movement is more than just exercise and features a conversation with world renowned movement expert Dr. Kelly Starrett.

Best known for his hit Mobility WOD YouTube channel and New York Times best-selling book "Becoming a Supple Leopard", Dr. Starrett has dedicated his life to fixing broken bodies.

CLICK HERE for the full transcript.

In our conversation we discuss:

  • What it was like to grow up in a mountain town outside of Munich.
  • The "aha" moment of satori he experienced while surfing.
  • His early influences and mentors in the world of CrossFit and Weightlifting.
  • What he learned by studying the movement traditions of martial arts, yoga, and gymnastics.
  • Why we need to stop "fitnessing".
  • How to cultivate physical competence in kids.
  • The problems with physical education and how to fix them.
  • What he thinks about the statement "sitting is the new smoking".
  • How to sit correctly.
  • Transitioning to a standing workstation.
  • How you can join the Mobility WOD movement.

Paleo Radio Bites 50 - Losing 100lbs and Finding Your Purpose with Stephanie Dodier

Tue, Jul 26, 2016

PMR Bites Feature Image

Stephanie Dodier spent fifteen years climbing the corporate ladder and while she projected an image of success on the outside, on the inside, trouble was brewing.

One day, while Stephanie was giving a presentation, an alarming sensation came over her, her heart raced, she felt lightheaded, and she thought she was having a heart attack. Her co-workers rushed her to the hospital and after being thoroughly examined, the prognosis was that she had experienced a panic attack brought on by stress. Instead of talking to her about her diet and lifestyle however, the doctor simply wrote a prescription for anti-anxiety and antidepressant medications and sent her on her way.

Intuitively, Stephanie knew that this was the wrong approach and in that moment decided to take a different path. The journey that she began on that fateful day has not only resulted in health, it has also reinvigorated Stephanie's spirit, her sense of connection, and ignited her purpose.

On today's show, she tells her story and shares the lessons she learned along the way.

When we found out that we'd be talking to Brad Kearns, former pro triathlete, host of the Primal Endurance Podcast, and co-author of Mark Sisson's new book Primal Endurance, we thought it would be a straightforward conversation about athletic performance, the mechanics of the cardiorespiratory system, and why chronic cardio is a bad idea.

The conversation we actually had was much different, and much more interesting in my opinion, covering a much broader scope of subjects and diving deep into the areas of mindset, intuition, and awareness.

Brad has been working alongside Mark Sisson for many years, but he has his own unique and valuable voice within the Paleo/Primal space. His experience as a professional athlete, a parent, and educator have given him valuable insights into his own mind, and by extension, the human condition as a whole. We really enjoyed this interview and think you will too.

Click Here for the full transcript.

On today's show, we discuss:

  • The art of deciphering media messages about fitness.
  • What we can, and can't learn from gurus.
  • Why success by conventional standards doesn't guarantee happiness.
  • The importance of balance and intuition.
  • Why improving your endurance doesn't necessarily require struggle and suffering.
  • The fat burning benefits of training below your anaerobic threshold.
  • How to do CrossFit right.
  • When you should stop or even skip a workout.

Paleo Radio Bites 49 - Teenage Paleo Blogger Sadie Radinsky

Tue, Jul 19, 2016

PMR Bites Feature Image

Every once in awhile you come across someone who just has "it", that difficult to quantify quality of energy, enthusiasm, confidence, and presence that makes other people pay attention and take notice.

While at Paleo f(x) this past year we met someone who has "it", teenage Paleo blogger Sadie Radinsky.

She wowed Paleo f(x) founder Michelle Norris, chatted up Robb Wolf, and definitely made a mark on us as well. You might remember her from our 2016 Paleo f(x) wrap up episode, but we wanted to bring her back to tell a little more about her story, her Paleo mission, and to share with you some of the magic that she brings to this world.

So without further ado, Sadie Radinsky of Goodies Against the Grain.

One of Tony's first assignments for Paleo Magazine was to cover the original Paleo f(x) conference and the first person he met in Austin was a fellow Paleo fan named Charissa Talbot.

At the time, Charissa had just taken a job working as a virtual assistant for Diane Sanfilippo, whose Balance Bites blog and 21 Day Sugar Detox program had just started to become a little too much for her to handle on her own.

They became fast friends and spent much of that weekend fanboying and fangirling over the talks, presentations, workshops, and experiences that defined the original Paleo f(x) event.

Fast forward several years later and Tony's still working for Paleo Magazine and Charissa too is still heavily involved in the Paleo community.

Her current role as COO for ThePaleoMom.com involves overseeing an entire team of coaches, writers, editors, and social media specialists. She's Dr. Sarah Ballantyne's right hand woman, working behind the scenes to ensure that all the book projects, blog posts, programs, and podcasts featured on ThePaleoMom.com arrive on time, in shape, and ready to rock.

We are thrilled to have the opportunity to interview our friend Charissa and to share her story with all of you.

Click Here for the full transcript.

On today's show, we discuss:

  • Her pre-paleo diet of bagels, cream cheese, beer, and cigarettes.
  • How high intensity exercise helped her cope with a long distance relationship and the death of her brother.
  • The Balanced Bites seminar that changed her life and led to her first job in Paleo.
  • How to grow a blog into a business.
  • The importance of building teams.
  • Her advice for becoming a digital nomad, doing what you love, and getting paid for it.

Paleo Radio Bites 48 - A Prayer for Understanding

Mon, Jul 11, 2016

PMR Bites Feature Image

As you all must know, the past few weeks have been tragic, so much so that the word tragic seems insufficient.

When we check the Facebook news feed we're confronted with such unbelievable violence. Violence against gay nightclub goers, violence against African Americans, violence against police, and we feel compelled to address this rift in our collective consciousness as ignoring it and pretending it doesn't exist or didn't happen seems disrespectful to the deceased, their families, and to society at large.

We realize that this is a podcast largely focused on health, exercise, entrepreneurship, and food, but none of these things exist in a vacuum.

We also realize that it can be tempting to hide ourselves from the world by focusing on the minutia of our lives, whether we drank enough bone broth, ate enough kale, or made ourselves sweat. These things are important, personal health is important, but we are all part of a tribe and right now our tribe is not well.

We don't pretend to have any solutions but do know that as humans we are capable of doing good just as much as we are capable of committing acts of evil and we're certain that there is more good in this world than not.

We think our own words are exhausted at this point, so we're going to play something that feels particularly relevant to the moment we are in today.

What you're about to hear is a speech Robert F. Kennedy gave on April 4, 1968 in Indianapolis Indiana. At the time, he was running for the Democratic presidential nomination and while one his way to what was supposed to be a typical campaign rally, he was given the news that Martin Luther King had been shot and killed.

This was before 24 hour cable news and before the internet, so many of the people assembled did not know what had happened to Dr. King. Kennedy's aides, local officials, and law enforcement were concerned about security and the potential for a riot, but he decided to speak anyway and gave the speech from a podium mounted on the back of a flatbed truck.

When news of Dr. King's death broke, there were riots in over 100 US cities including New York, Chicago, Boston, Detroit, and Baltimore, but Indianapolis was not one of them and it is thought that the speech given by Robert Kennedy was one reason why the city, unlike so many others, remained calm in the aftermath of Dr. King's assassination.

63 days after giving this speech Robert Kennedy was also shot and killed, but his words and the impact that they had on the people who heard them lived on.

Our hope in sharing this speech with you today is that Robert Kennedy's words will live in you as well and that in the face of so much tragedy, evil, and despair, you will choose love, hope, and understanding.

So you’ve read the “The Paleo Diet," "The Primal Blueprint," and “The Paleo Solution” and are ready to dive headfirst into the Paleo lifestyle. You hop in your car, head to the local supermarket, and start looking for Paleo-friendly foods.

If you’re like most people, somewhere between the sugar-infused tomato sauces, CAFO meat, and wheat gluten everything, you throw your hands up in frustration, realizing that while the Paleo concept is simple, shopping Paleo isn’t. Luckily however, you’re not alone, and if there is a positive side to frustration, it’s that it’s a great stimulus for invention.

Jen Reissman, co-founder of OneStopPaleoShop.com, remembers her Paleo-shopping frustration well. She and her co-founder Devon would visit upwards of seven different stores to get everything they needed, and it was after one particularly trying day of shopping that Jen and Devon had an idea. They decided that they would create a website that brought together all sorts of Paleo-friendly products under one roof, a one stop paleo shop if you will, which they also realized was a great name for their business, and so the website onestoppaleoshop.com was born.

Click Here for the full transcript.

On today's show we discuss:

  • Turning her mom's mail order supplement company into an online Paleo superstore.
  • How they decided on their original inventory of products.
  • How they created buzz for their new business with a Paleo Magazine ad.
  • Her favorite Paleo staples.
  • The Paleo treat that her French bulldogs demand each and every day.
  • Her favorite customer testimonials.
  • What the future has in store for their store.

Paleo Radio Bites 47 - Olympic Lifting with Stephanie Gaudreau

Tue, Jul 05, 2016

PMR Bites Feature Image

The 2016 Summer Olympics will be held next month in Rio de Janeiro Brazil, and along with the gymnastics, track and field, soccer, boxing, and other sports, there's weightlifting.

But unlike the weightlifting most of us are familiar with, Olympic weightlifting doesn't involve targeting specific muscle groups. There is no biceps curl, bench press, or dip, no leg press, hamstring curl, or seated row.

In Olympic weightlifting there are two moves; the clean and jerk and the snatch, that's it, but despite their superficial simplicity, the clean and jerk and snatch require thousands of hours of practice and the patience of a zen monk to master.

On today's show, Stephanie Gaudreau, Paleo Magazine Radio regular and host of Harder to Kill, breaks down the details of Olympic lifting. Why it is her chosen sport, and why the pursuit of Olympic Lifting mastery is worth it's weight in gold medals even if you're not planning on going to the Olympics.

OUR MISSION
To restore our health, strength and vitality by providing history's healthiest whole food nutrients to the modern world.

AncientNutrition.com

This week, we had originally planned on featuring an interview with Jen Reissman of One Stop Paleo shop, but we couldn't wait to share what we recorded a couple days ago. It's a conversation with Dr. Andy Galpin, a professor at the Center for Sport Performance at California State University and Director of their Biochemistry and Molecular Exercise Physiology Laboratory.

We met at Paleof(x) while moderating a panel called "Swole by Science". He was a featured panelists that struck us by his ability to take complex physiological processes, like how muscle contractions occur thanks to millions of tiny protein filaments called actin and myosin, and to break them down into an understandable and relatable form.

The plan going into this interview was to get Dr. Andy to reiterate the points he made during the panel discussion, but what we didn't expect is to get into some seriously awesome side conversations.

Click Here for the full transcript

On today's show we discuss:

  • The nature of academia.
  • Why mediocre athletes make great researchers and what it's like to really train superstar pro athletes.
  • What his father and grandfather taught him about extreme responsibility.
  • How to cut through the "smoke and mirrors" of health marketing.
  • The difference between knowledge and wisdom.
  • How he went from being a Paleof(x) skeptic to a full on fan.
  • And, of course, how muscles work, what they're made of, and how to make them bigger.

Paleo Radio Bites 46 - Obstacle Dominator Podcast Preview

Mon, Jun 27, 2016

PMR Bite 38 Feature Image

On last week's episode of Paleo Magazine Radio, we had a great conversation with professional obstacle course racer Hunter McIntyre. We dove deep into Hunter's past and how he overcame difficulties with school and societal expectations to become who he is today.

It was a great conversation full of incredible stories as well as practical takeaways for crushing obstacle course races as well as the hurdles life itself throws your way.

At the end of the episode, we mentioned that we would be previewing an episode of Hunter's podcast, the Obstacle Dominator show that he co-hosts with Paleo Magazine Radio alum Ben Greenfield, so that's what you'll be hearing today.

The episode you'll be listening to features Hunter and Professional Racing Coach Dennis Welch.

They discuss the evolution of Obstacle Racing and how it is now attracting serious athletes and professionals from other sporting domains like Randy Moss and Lance Armstrong, Coach Dennis' favorite training implements and how he cultivates future Hunter McIntyre's by working with youth athletes.

OPTIMAL NUTRITION WITHOUT COMPROMISE
DnxBar.com

At some point in human history, physical movement became a luxury and gyms opened up to serve exercise to the masses. As our lifestyles got worse, so did our health, and as statistics for obesity rose, some of us continued to dive into the growing exercise industry.

Host Tony Federico has been in the fitness industry for ten years and when not podcasting, is the director of a fitness center in Jacksonville Florida serving approximately 500 members and offering a variety of services such as group exercise classes, personal training, massage, free weights, and cardio training equipment. In the past, he coached crossfit and thinks a large part of the crossfit movement is a protest of the traditional fitness model, no pun intended. But going beyond crossfit, there seems to be a growing number of people interested in even more extreme departures from the fitness norm.

Obstacle racing, mud running and super spartan events range in size and scope but all advertise how completely dirty you will be when you finish. Far from our sanitary "regular" lives, mud running is a wild romp through physical, mental, and spiritual hurdles.  It totally sucks, but that's the point. Obstacle races take us out of our comfort zone and we pay good money for it. For some participants, this is an occasional catharsis, but for others, it's something more.

Today's guest, Hunter McIntyre, is widely considered to be one of the best obstacle course racers in the world. Sponsored by the Spartan Race organization and Reebok, he travels around the world, putting on a display of incredible attitude, confidence, and primal energy wherever races.

Click Here for the full transcript

On today's show we discuss:

  • Growing up as a wild child, dropping out of college, and training as a lumberjack.
  • Learning about nutrition from Tim Ferris' book the 4-hr body.
  • How he ran his first spartan race, slightly buzzed, in his underwear, and still finished in the top 10 in a field of 8,000.
  • What it took to become a professional obstacle course racer.
  • How he trains to be the best in the world.
  • Why he's now spending his time cross-country skiing across Greenland and running across the Moab desert.

Paleo Radio Bites 45 - Magical Pork from The Piggery

Tue, Jun 21, 2016

PMR Bite 38 Feature Image

One of the very specific benefits of being Paleo podcasters is that we occasionally receive packages of meat in the mail. For some, this might seem odd, but for us it's about as exciting as christmas day. We tear into the cardboard and foam packaging anticipating what sort of meaty delights are hidden inside and given that Paleo is all about quality grass-fed, sustainably sourced, humanely raised, heritage breed meats we're rarely disappointed but sometimes, there's that rare occasion where we encounter a game changer.

This is what happened after we got a package from The Piggery, a pastured pork collective based out of Ithaca, New York. Their rosemary thyme rubbed pork chops were a revelation, pork unlike any we've ever experienced, more like beef or steak than pork, and after that first bite we had to know how they did it, and after this episode of Paleo Radio bites, you will too.

On today's bite we chat with Piggery owner Brad Marshall who shares some of his secrets to making magical pork products.

OUR MISSION
To restore our health, strength and vitality by providing history's healthiest whole food nutrients to the modern world.

When we think of physicians we typically think of doctors in white coats and when we think of medicine, we typically think of prescription pharmaceuticals.

But this particular form of healthcare, one which predominates in contemporary Western culture, is actually a relatively new phenomenon which only took shape in the past 100 or so years. So before the white coats and before the drugs what did people do when they got sick?

Using the plants, animals, and minerals around them, ancient peoples were remarkably adept at maintaining health and often incorporated physical, mental, and spiritual practices into a holistic way of life. One example of a traditional healthcare system, and one which predates our western medical model by thousands of years, is ayurveda.

Developed by vedic culture of ancient India, Ayurveda, translates literally as "the wisdom of life".  In Ayurveda, health is a vital, energetic, and balanced state of being, rather than just the absence of disease, and ayurvedic practitioners use a variety of diagnostic methods to customize health prescriptions for each patient's individual needs.

Ayurvedic teachings were originally passed from one practitioner to another by apprenticeships and oral traditions, but they were eventually codified around 300 BC in a sacred text known as the Rig Veda.Since then, knowledge of Ayurveda has spawned thousands of books, health retreats, blogs, and beyond. Thanks in large part to it's effectiveness, this ancient health practice has found a home in the modern age.

On today's show, we're joined by Ayurveda expert, Dr. Akil Palanisamy, who is also a Harvard trained physician. His new book, "The Paleovedic Diet", combines the best of Western medicine, ayurveda, and paleo into a complete program that will help readers to burn fat, increase energy, and reverse disease.

PMR Bite 38 Feature Image

In April 2015 we interviewed Nick Mares, an 18 year old entrepreneur who, along with his brother Justin, had just launched a food startup called Bone Broth's Co. When we last talked to Nick, the company had just secured a contract with a co-packer who could produce bone broth to their exacting standards. It had been a long process, with many ups and downs, and if you want to listen to this episode first, check out Paleo Magazine Radio Episode 81, titled Startup Paleo.

Today we're checking in with Nick to see how far the company has come in the past year. We think you're going to find that it's grown exponentially.

Rowing to the Olympics with Joe Seaman - PMR #129

Thu, Jun 09, 2016

PMR Episode 128 Feature Image

Every four years, the elite athletes from all across the globe gather to compete in the Olympic games. Those 17 days are filled with triumph, tragedy, heartbreak, and exaltation. Some rise, some fall, and all of us are entranced.

Most of us watch the spectacle with a sense of awe, a feeling that we are witnessing feats that are incredible, impossible for mere mortals, but for some, watching the Olympics ignites a deep hunger, a drive, and a purpose.

For every Olympian that competes in the games, there are hundreds, thousands, perhaps even millions more who dedicate themselves each and every day to the goal of competing, of winning, of proving themselves to the world and becoming an Olympic athlete.

Today's guest, Joseph Seaman is one of those hopefuls. Born in the UK, Joe now lives in Austin Texas where he trains and competes in the sport of rowing.

From afar, rowing is a graceful endeavor, with streamlined boats gliding across the water, but if you zoom in closer, you'll see that it is a brutal sport that pushes the body and mind to it's limits.

Click Here for the full transcript

On today's show we discuss:

  • How he was introduced to the sport.
  • What it's like to work a 9 to 5 job while training for the Olympics.
  • The key elements of rowing technique.
  • How eating Paleo has helped fuel his athletic performance.
  • Why rowing is the perfect high-intensity exercise.
  • How you can implement rowing into your routine.

Tue, Jun 07, 2016

PMR Bite 38 Feature Image

Regular listeners of this show know who Diana Rogers is, but if you don't, she's the author of two books, The Homegrown Paleo Cookbook and Paleo Lunches and Breakfasts On The Go, a podcast host, a farmer, and a regular contributor to Paleo Magazine. Diana has also been working diligently for the past few years to complete her education as a Registered Dietitian.

Getting your RD is no joke, it is a lot of work and requires serious commitment especially when you have multiple businesses and a family to take care of as well.

Diana persevered through a slew of challenging situations while going through this process, but ultimately prevailed and is now officially a Paleo RD.

On today's show, Diana tells the story of how she made it happen, which Paleo experts encouraged her along the way, and how she plans to change the nutritional world from the inside out.

UFC, CBD, Books, Blogging, and More Live from Paleo f(x) 2016 - PMR Special Report

Thu, Jun 02, 2016

PMR Special Report - 2016 Paleo f(x)

This past weekend was the fifth annual Paleo f(x) conference, and as usual, it was bigger and better than ever before. With dozens of lectures, mastermind panels, cooking demos, and hundreds of vendors it's a veritable Paleo wonderland, but the best part is the people. If you walk in any direction, it's only a matter of seconds before you run into someone exceptional, and that’s not being hyperbolic. That's literally how today's show was recorded.

With a portable mic at the paleo magazine booth, we picked a direction, started walking, and grabbed the first person we came across. The result is a slew of on the spot interviews and conversations that feature everyone from a 14 year old Paleo blogger to a UFC superstar. Since everything was recorded on site, and right in the middle of the action, there is a good amount of ambient noise, but this is what it's like at Paleo f(x). There's always something going on and it's hard to decide what to pay attention to. Inevitably you'll get pulled into someone's orbit and have a conversation you'll never forget.

This is the closest you'll get to Paleo f(x) without actually attending, which we obviously recommend, and if you missed this year's show, or if you were there and just can't wait to go back, this will hopefully hold you over until 2017.

Paleo Radio Bites 42 - Deep Dish Preview, The Meatloaf Episode

Tue, May 31, 2016

PMR Bite 38 Feature Image

Last week on the podcast we mentioned a project host Tony Federico and PMR regular Russ Crandall have been working on called Deep Dish. It's a four episode podcast series as well as an ebook that's laser focused on a single meal, the all-american combination of meat loaf, mashed potatoes and gravy, peas and carrots, and apple pie. The show dives deep into the history, science, and cultural significance of each element of the dish, starting with meatloaf, and it's main ingredient, beef. The ultimate version of this dish is then created, using the highest quality ingredients, and a preparation that honors the history of the dish while elevating it with modern culinary techniques. All the recipes start off gluten free, but optional dairy-free, Paleo, Primal, Whole30, Vegetarian, and Vegan substitutions are provided as well.

For today's Paleo Radio bite, we're going to play for you Deep Dish Episode 1: Meat Loaf, and hope you enjoy the deep dive into this seemingly ordinary food. We think you'll find that there's much more to meatloaf than meets the eye.

Ancient Nutrition with Maker's Diet Author Jordan Rubin - PMR #128

Thu, May 26, 2016

PMR Episode 128 Feature Image

The Paleo community is, by and large, a secular universe. We frame our perspectives on health and healing in terms of evolutionary mismatches, and lean heavily on science to explain the unfolding of our lives, But most of the worlds population has another world view, one that places god at the center of the universe.

It's often assumed that these two worlds, the secular and the spiritual, are mutually exclusive, but is that necessarily true? Can someone believe in the almighty and in science?

Today's guest, Jordan Rubin, is the author of the international best-selling Maker's Diet books, and is sometimes referred to as America's Biblical Health coach. Jordan's studies of naturopathic medicine, nutrition, and scripture led him to conclusions about diet and health that will sound very familiar to even part-time Paleos.

Click Here for the full transcript

On today's show Jordan and I discuss:

  • How he recovered from a chronic wasting disease that left him wheelchair bound and near death at the age of 19.
  • What he did to turn a part-time job at a health food store into a highly successful career.
  • His favorite thing about running a grass-based farm.
  • Why "juicing" should really be replaced by "brothing”.
  • Why he's so excited about "ancient nutrition"

NOW AVAILABLE!
Deep Dish: Season One
with
TONY FEDERICO & RUSS CRANDALL

This first season of Deep Dish focuses on the quintessential American meal: meatloaf, mashed potatoes and gravy, peas and carrots, and apple pie. Join us as we discuss the history and cultural significance of each dish, and how this seemingly simple meal truly captures the American spirit.

The recipes contained in Season One are all gluten-free, with optional dairy-free, Paleo, Primal, Whole30, Vegetarian, and Vegan substitutions provided.

Paleo Radio Bites 41 - Does This Gluten Make Me Look Fat?

Mon, May 23, 2016

PMR Bite 38 Feature Image

Gluten is the main protein found it wheat and it's what gives bread its chewiness and pastries their texture, but despite gluten's gustatory appeal, this particular plant protein has been increasingly implicated in a wide range of health conditions ranging from gut related gluten allergies and celiac's disease to neurological conditions like ALS, epilepsy, and autism.

Recently however, Examine.com, the internet's only independent encyclopedia on supplementation and nutrition, broke down a new study which found another reason why you might want to reconsider eating gluten, and to explore why, we're joined by the director of Examine.com Kamal Patel in another installment of Smart Supplementation.

How to Scientifically Engineer a Six Pack with Dr Mike T Nelson - PMR #127

Thu, May 19, 2016

PMR Episode 127 Feature Image

We've seen more than our fair share of gimmicky abdominal exercise machines and over-the-top core training routines. These products and programs consistently promise miraculous results. Six packs in six weeks, inches off your waist with no effort, or improved posture and athletic performance. Do they really work well? Slick marketing can mislead us with doctored before and after photos. Real scientific inquiry is not so easily deceived. In the spirit of deconstructing core training we brought in a real expert on the subject, Dr. Mike T. Nelson.

Dr. Mike holds a PhD in Exercise Physiology, a BA in Natural Science and an MS in Mechanical Engineering, so he definitely knows his stuff.

CLICK HERE for the full transcript

On today's show we discuss:

  • How he went from building actual ray guns to studying exercise science.
  • What the core really is and how your current training program is affecting it.
  • The difference between training for life versus training for the gym.
  • Why a gymnastics hollow position might be a better core exercises than a CrossFit GHD sit-up.
  • What your squat tells you about core stability.
  • What core training equipment actually works.

Paleo Radio Bites 40 - It's Good to be a Meat Dork

Mon, May 16, 2016

PMR Bite 38 Feature Image

While competing in Korean Crossfit, weightlifting, and powerlifting competitions, Kenneth Chung discovered Paleo but while he was excited to embrace this new lifestyle, he also discovered that sourcing grass-fed meat wasn't easy.

A chance job assignment consulting for an international meat packing company gave him a crash course in the meat industry, and in 2012, he joined the team behind Bos Creek, a subscription box service that shipped customized boxes of grass-fed meat nationwide.

Always the competitor, Kenneth knew he could do better, and with their just launched Meat Dorks kickstarter campaign, he hopes to change the meat delivery game with source verification, Whole Animal Journeys, and even greater customer customization.

Today on Paleo Radio Bites we're joined by Kenneth Chung, creator of Meat Dorks, to find out more about the project, their mission, and how to cook zabuton, the most popular cut of beef in Japan.

Growing Healthy Kids from the Ground up with The Dirt Cure author Dr. Maya Shetreat-Klein - PMR #126

Mon, May 09, 2016

PMR Episode 126 Feature Image

Kids today are expected to sit still, pay attention, and behave like little adults and when they don't, they're diagnosed with ADD and medicated with stimulant drugs. But can you really blame them when most of their calories come from processed food and most of their fun comes from a computer or smartphone screen?

Just as adults get sick when their modern lifestyles run counter to their ancient DNA kids too suffer and what makes it all worse is the sad fact that most of the medical and educational establishment hasn't made this connection. Thankfully however, some doctors are breaking rank and trading in their prescription pads for cooking classes.

One practitioner who exemplifies this is Dr. Maya Shetreat-Klein, a board-certified adult and child neurologist, lifelong foodie, and environmental activist, who from her New York City based practice, has successfully treated hundreds of children with neurological issues with an integrative approach, that includes functional medicine, herbs, mind-body techniques, and homeopathy.

CLICK HERE for the full transcript

On today's show we discuss:

  • How she became interested in the field of psycho-neuro immunology.
  • Why she is concerned about use of stimulant drugs to treat pediatric behavior and attention disorders.
  • How she started to use things like food, outdoor time, and dirt to treat her patients.
  • The life-changing transformations she's seen with her approach.
  • The childcare revolution she hopes to start with her new book The Dirt Cure Growing Healthy Kids with Food Straight from Soil.

Rewriting the Cider House Rules with Robert and David Cordtz of the Sonoma Cider Co - PMR #124

Thu, Apr 28, 2016

PMR Episode 124 Feature Image

The word "cider" has it's roots in the ancient hebrew word sekar, or "strong drink" and as apples moved from the mountains of Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan, the "strong drink" made from the fermented juice of apples followed.

Cider was brought to America by the pilgrims, and for many years, cider was the beverage of choice for peasants and presidents alike. During the early part of the 19th century however, prohibitionists turned their ire towards cider, smashing kegs and uprooting orchards.

For decades, American cider production was almost nonexistent, but now we are on the cusp of a veritable cider boom. More and more people are looking for alternatives to beer, and as a naturally gluten free product, cider is happy to oblige.

On today's show, we discuss the nature of today's cider business with Robert and David Cordtz, the father and son team behind the Sonoma Cider Company.

CLICK HERE for the full transcript

Sonoma Ciders feature bold flavors like sarsaparilla vanilla and Kentucky bourbon and in our conversation we discuss...

  • How the pair got into the cider business.
  • Their process for developing new flavors.
  • How hundreds of pounds of habanero peppers made their way into one of their limited runs.
  • Why they think their particular brand of uncompromising, craft ciders appeal to the palates of foodies and health fanatics alike.

Paleo Radio Bites 38 - A Meaty Conversation with Butcher Box CEO Mike Salguero

Mon, Apr 25, 2016

PMR Bite 38 Feature Image

While some people are satisfied with the grain-fed, CAFO raised, industrial meat that is passed off as beef in much of our restaurants and grocery stores, there is a growing demand for something different.

In the past, that "something different" might have taken the form of tracking down a local farmer to arrange for the purchase of a "cow share", a whole, half, or quarter steer that required significant freezer space and a big investment.

While this, or better yet, growing your own, likely represents the gold standard for grass-fed beef acquisition, many people don't live in agricultural areas, so access is limited. And even if you do live in a rural part of the country that hosts large domestic herbivores, there's no guarantee that the farmer is following grass-fed and grass-finishing standards, or that he or she will even sell to you.

Thanks to the internet however we now have a third option, from the comfort of our own home, we can purchase carefully selected grass-fed and grass-finished meats and have them delivered right to our door.

One such service is getbutcherbox.com, a new type of meat delivery service that started off as a wildly successful Kickstarter campaign and is now shipping customers a new, carefully curated box of meat, steaks, bacon, short ribs, and the like, each and every month.

Making Millions with Momma's Salad Dressing - a Conversation with Tessemaes All Natural Co-Founder Greg Vetter - PMR 123

Wed, Apr 20, 2016

PMR Episode 123 Feature Image

Everybody knows that mom does it best; whether it's her homemade lasagna, chocolate chip cookies, apple pie, or if you're Tessemae Vetter, a signature salad dressing.

As the mom of 3 active boys, Tessemae had to figure out a way to get her kids to eat their veggies. She succeeded by whipping up a simple combination of lemon juice, olive oil, mustard, and salt. Tessemae's dressing was not only a hit with her own kids, there are even instances of salad dressing theft perpetrated by her son's friends.

Hearing this story alone would be well worth your time, but what comes next is the real kicker. After years of eating the house dressing, Tessemae's oldest son Greg decided that there really was something special about that signature blend. With a bit of stage craft, Greg convinced Whole Foods, and then his mom to go into business bottling the family recipe and the rest, as they say, is history.

Today we're joined by Tessemae's all natural co-founder, Greg Vetter.

CLICK HERE for the full transcript

In our conversation we discuss:

  • His experiences as a college athlete.
  • The lightening bolt of inspiration that convinced him that he needed to quit his job and start Tessemae's.
  • How he used a Tupperware of romaine lettuce to convince Whole Foods to carry their product.
  • How he, his pregnant wife, his mom, and his brothers built the business over the course of many late nights and weekends.
  • What it's like now to be running a multi-million dollar company.

The Ancestral Health Symposium Past and Present with J. Brett Smith and Aaron Blaisdell - PMR #122

Wed, Apr 13, 2016

PMR Episode 222 Feature Image

If you really want to know why the Paleo lifestyle works so well in combating chronic disease, reversing the aging process, and turning everyday people into fat burning beasts, you'll inevitably encounter a concept called Evolutionary Mismatch. An evolutionary mismatch occurs when our body, a collection of trillions of cells beautifully programmed by millions of years of evolution, encounters something completely unexpected and descends into chaos. In the past evolutionary mismatches arose from natural events, cataclysms like super volcanoes and asteroid impacts, as well as cyclical climate changes, but these mismatches ultimately spurned new evolutions and adaptations. Unfortunately for us modern humans, the radical technological and societal changes that we have initiated have transformed our world, and have changed so many things so quickly that our bodies just can't keep up, and evolutionary mismatches abound.

Eating processed food like substances instead of whole foods is a mismatch. Sitting down all day staring at a computer screen instead of experiencing dynamic movement within mother nature is a mismatch. Replacing our intimate tribal relationships of community and family with text messages is an evolutionary mismatch, and as the process of evolution and natural selection runs its course, millions of us suffer and die from chronic disease and millions more live in states of dis-health. But all hope is not lost Paleo Nation, as someone listening to this podcast and living the Paleo lifestyle, you are part of the solution, and now more than ever, there are resources at your disposal that can help you manage the evolutionary mismatches in your life.

There are books, blogs, podcasts, and even events dedicated to the practice of ancestral health. Today we'll be talking to two proponents to the ancestral health model. J. Brett Smith and Aaron Blaisdell. Both of these guys are so passionate about the subject that they've dedicated countless hours towards organizing one of the premier Paleo events of the year. The Ancestral Health Symposium.

CLICK HERE for the full transcript

In This Episode We Discuss:

  • What inspired Aaron to create the Ancestral Health Symposium.
  • How J.Brett Smith went from being an AHS attendee to becoming their Program Chair.
  • Favorite moments from past years events.
  • The unforeseen consequences that caused the cancellation of AHS 15.
  • Their thoughts about the mainstreaming of Paleo.
  • The role of AHS and other events in the evolution of Ancestral Health.
  • What we can look forward to at this years event which will be taking place at the University of Colorado Boulder campus August 11th to the 13th.

When we're kids, we're told to wash our hands, taught to keep our clothes clean, and to never eat something that has dirt on it. But what if all that sanitation has side effects?

Despite the fact that we're living in what is arguably the most disinfectant happy society to ever walk the face of the earth, many of us still suffer from chronic health conditions, many of which start in the gut. Perhaps all that bacteria, all that dirt, was doing something good for us. Maybe it's time to start getting back to our roots by eating food, and dirt, the way nature intended?

On today's show, we're joined by one of the most vocal proponents of eating dirty, Dr. Josh Axe, author of the brand new book, Eat Dirt: Why Leaky Gut May Be the Root Cause of Your Health Problems and 5 Surprising Steps to Cure it.

In This Episode We Discuss:

  • How his mother's illness inspired him to pursue a career in health.
  • The strategy he used to grow his practice.
  • What he learned by working with a wide range of clients, from regular families to professional athletes.
  • His secret to health success.
  • Why he thinks we could all benefit from eating a little dirt.

National Food Policy Conference Disinvites Real Food Activist Nina Teicholz - Paleo Magazine Radio Special Report

Tue, Apr 05, 2016

PMR Special Report Image

When Nina Teicholz (author of international best-seller, The Big Fat Surprise) was invited to participate in a panel discussion at the 39th annual National Food Policy Conference taking place this week in Washington DC, she was excited for the opportunity to bring her ideas about food and nutrition to the BIG table. This conference brings together the food policy insiders who create position statements that have far reaching consequences for how our nation eats, and it's hard to argue against the fact that we need to eat better. We're fatter, sicker, and unhealthier than ever.

But, when Nina's co-panelists found out she would be participating, they threatened to drop out of the conference unless she was disinvited, and so she was.

Click Here for the full transcript.

In This Episode We Discuss:

  • The events leading up to her invitation and subsequent removal from the food policy panel.
  • How she felt about the news.
  • And what she's doing about it.

Energy Systems and Enlightenment with Liz Nierzwicki - PMR #120

Tue, Mar 29, 2016

PMR Episode 220 Feature Image

One of the idiosyncrasies of the human brain is that it's hardwired to put things into boxes. Not literal boxes necessarily, but figurative boxes. Just think, if you see a person walking past you on the street, you immediately, reflexively, and instinctively categorize them based on qualities like age, gender, skin color, clothing, and attractiveness. From these generalizations, we then extrapolate even further, projecting our own prejudices onto the other person in the form of our expectations about their intelligence, socioeconomic status, and character. In responding to this feature of our primate brains, we can either deny that we do this, or we can actively override our instincts. Doing this takes energy, but it is in this act that we exemplify our humanity.

One person who constantly works to break down boxes, whether it is in the business world or in the gym, is Liz Nierzwicki. Liz is the owner of Solace Yoga Studios. She is an online fitness entrepreneur and the author of the new book, "Happy Healthy Fit: Transform Your Life In 90-Days With The figureFIT! Lifestyle Program".

Click Here for the full transcript

In This Episode We Discuss:

  • Her thoughts on winning the 2015 Paleo f(x) Women's Fitness Challenge.
  • The ins and outs of our human energy systems.
  • Why she would rather run 10 sprints than a half marathon.
  • The effects of training for specificity vs general athleticism.
  • How she has merged mindfulness practices like yoga and meditation with traditional strength and conditioning.
  • The mental blocks that hold us back from success.
  • Her 90 day figure fit lifestyle transformation program.

If you're a health-focused web surfer, you've probably seen a new acronym floating around the interwebs recently. MTHFR, short for methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase, refers to a gene that produces an important enzyme in the body. This enzyme helps convert the amino acid homocysteine into methionine, an essential amino acid for numerous functions.

Like all genes, MTHFR comes in several variations. Some work better than others, and some don't work at all. Dysfunctioned MTHFR gene could be a contributing factor in a wide variety of illnesses, including vascular disease, neural tube defects, Alzheimer's, dementia, colon cancer, and leukemia, just to name a few. Obviously, this is very concerning, and as a result, genetic testing services, as well as specific websites and coaching services have popped up in response to the MTHFR threat, but is it really a threat? Is MTHFR the new gluten, or is it, like shark attacks and lightning strikes, something that most of us really don't have to worry about?

One outspoken critic of the commercialization of MTHFR treatment is Craig Pickering. Craig is a former world-champion sprinter who currently works as the Head of Sport Science for DNAFit, a company dedicated to providing DNA-based diet and exercise recommendations for both Olympic athletes and everyday folks alike.

Click Here for the full transcript

In This Episode We Discuss:

  • What MTHFR is and what are it's effects.
  • What your chances of being affected by this genetic mutation are and what you can do about it.
  • Which dietary supplements and even Paleo foods can help those with MTHFR disfunction.
  • What the scientific research really says.
  • The really interesting genetic testing Craig and his team at DNA?t are doing.

Becoming a Hair Shaman with Anthony Morrocco - PMR #118

Wed, Mar 16, 2016

PMR Episode 118 Feature Image

It was New York City in the 1960s and Anthony Morrocco, an aspiring hairstylist, had just landed his dream job. He had been taken on as an apprentice of Kenneth's, the Manhattan salon of the world's first celebrity hairstylist, Kenneth Battelle. At Kenneth's, the regulars included the most famous women of the day, and it was not uncommon to see Jackie Kennedy, Audrey Hepburn, Marilyn Monroe, Lucille Ball, Fay Dunaway or Lauren Bacall at the salon. This was the golden age of style but there's also a dark side to all that glitter.

In the 1930s, the cosmetic industry successfully lobbied for and received exemptions from the FDA for its cosmetic products. This meant that the chemical formulations used in skin moisturizers, perfumes, lipsticks, fingernail polishes, eye and facial makeup, cleansing shampoos, and deodorants did not have to be registered with the FDA and were not subject to pre-market safety analysis. As a stylist, Anthony was constantly exposed to these chemicals, and he question their safety. So, at the age of 27, he walked away from the conventional hair care world and embarked on a quest to find an alternative path. His travels took him across the United States and eventually to Europe where he began to develop his own hair care line based on pure botanical ingredients. When he returned to the US, he launched his all-national products and began using them with clients. The Morrocco Method International company was born.

Click Here for the full transcript

In This Episode Tony and Anthony discuss:

  • What it was like to cut his teeth in the hair care industry's first celebrity salon.
  • How illness in clients and fellow stylists inspired him to find natural alternatives to conventional hair care products.
  • His interest in esoteric energy work.
  • What his wild crafted 5 elements hair product line can do for your hair.
  • How you can "awaken your roots" and become your own personal hair shaman.

Paleo Radio Bites 33 - Be The Change with The Legendary Life's Ted Ryce

Mon, Mar 14, 2016

PMR Bites Feature Image

In Paleo Radio Bites episode 33 host Tony Federico interviews Legendary Life Podcast creator Ted Ryce about his Be the Change Movement Kickstarter campaign.

Ted Ryce is a motivational speaker, ?tness expert, wellness coach and host of the Legendary Life podcast. He's based out of Miami Beach, and over the years he's worked with celebrities and businessmen like Richard Branson. It hasn't been all glitz and glamour though.

When Ted was 14, his mother died in a car accident, only a few years later, his younger brother Jimmy Ryce was kidnapped, raped and murdered in a high publicity case that led to the creation of the Jimmy Ryce foundation by Ted's father and step mother. The Jimmy Ryce foundation funds the training of bloodhounds to help law enforcement groups ?nd missing people. The foundation is struggling however, and Ted's on a mission to keep the foundation, and it's mission alive.

Urgent Action Needed IconAlong with his partner Giselle Oliveira, Ted has launched a Kickstarter campaign called the Be The Change Movement. Be The Change supporters will receive tools to empower, inspire, and achieve their own personal goals and the money raised will help fund the Jimmy Ryce foundation. Currently, they are at $3,000 of an $8,000 goal. The way Kickstarter works is that if you don't reach your goal you don't get anything. There is about a week left in the fundraising drive, so if everyone listening to this only donated $5, about as much as you'd pay for a coconut milk coffee at Starbucks or kombucha at Whole Foods, The Be The Change Movement will reach it's goal.

I'll Help: Take Me There!

The Bare Bones Broth Cookbook

There's a lot more to recipe writing than meets the eye. Previous blogging experience is certainly helpful, but with a cookbook, the pressure is on to make the reader's experience truly remarkable. Unlike a free blog post, someone paying $20 or $30 for a cookbook expects that they will achieve their desired culinary results right away. Therefore, getting a recipe cookbook ready means rigorously testing every element, scrutinizing the measurements, and refining the process, but perhaps more importantly, it requires that the author use empathy, thinking about cooking from their reader's point of view.

Famous for meticulously testing and retesting recipes for everything from chocolate chip cookies to Tuscan-style beef stew, America's Test Kitchen has built their brand on developing and sharing bulletproof recipes that literally anyone can make, so when I heard that ATK had tackled Paleo, I had to find out more. On today's episode, I'm joined by ATK Chief Creative Officer Jack Bishop.

In this conversation, Jack discusses his background as a food writer and cookbook editor, how many times America's Test Kitchen tests a recipe, and how one ATK author actually developed a rotator cuff injury from stirring 2,000 pounds of test fudge, what it's like for his kids growing up in a household led by 2 professional food writers, where he does his grocery shopping, how ATK heard about Paleo and the approach they took to producing their book "Paleo Perfected", and which perfect Paleo recipes are now in Jack's regular dinnertime rotation.

Click Here for the full transcript

In This Episode Tony and Jack discuss:

  • His background as a food writer and cookbook editor.
  • How many times America's Test Kitchen tests a recipe, and how one ATK author actually developed a rotator cuff injury from stirring 2,000 lbs of chocolate fudge.

Discovering The Paleo Way with Chef Pete Evans - PMR 116

Thu, Mar 03, 2016

In America, there's nothing unusual about celebrity chefs. Starting with the incomparable Julia Child, we've seen the rise of giants like Emeril, Mario Batali, and Gordon Ramsay, as well as trend setters and taste makers like Thomas Keller, David Chang, and Wylie Dufresne. We're also familiar with activist chefs like Jamie Oliver who used his platform and reach to challenge the American school system to wake up to real food.

By and large, these chefs are embraced by the media and applauded for their efforts, and on the surface, Australian celebrity chef Pete Evans' story seemed like it would follow a similar trajectory. Along with numerous cookbooks, a decades-long career as a chef and restaurateur, and multiple broadcast television credits, Pete Evans is an outspoken advocate for the paleo approach, but instead of applause, he often receives derision. His critics, a broad coalition that includes tabloid news outlets like the Daily Mail and the Dietitians Association of Australia which said, "Our primary concern is that some aspects of the Paleo diet are inconsistent with the Commonwealth Department of Health's Australian dietary guidelines."

On today's episode of Paleo Magazine Radio, we're joined by Chef Pete Evans in a conversation that goes beyond the headlines, focusing instead on the heart of the matter, his lifelong passion and dedication to empowering and educating with real food. During our conversation, we dive deep into Pete's training as a chef, his first real restaurant job, how Tony Robbins temporarily turned him into a vegan, how Nora Gedgaudas' "Primal Body Primal Mind" changed his life, why it took him more than a year to publicly come out as Paleo, as well as his books, TV shows, and Paleo Way 10-week Transformation Program.

Mastering Your Mind with Chris Kresser - PMR 115

Thu, Feb 25, 2016

We spend a lot of time focusing on what we eat, how we move, and how we sleep, but rarely do we discuss who is doing the eating, moving, and sleeping. In other words, we talk about actions, things we do, but not so much about being, who we are. Turning our attention within to the complex and mysterious realm of mind, emotion, and spirit can be challenging, but there is a reason why so many of the great thinkers, entrepreneurs, athletes, and high performers of the world make exploration of their inner world a priority.

In this episode of Paleo Magazine Radio, we’re joined by Chris Kresser. You probably know him best for his uber-popular website chriskresser.com, top-rated podcast Revolution Health Radio, and bestselling book The Paleo Cure, but what you might not know is that Chris is a long-time practitioner of Zen meditation, and he's someone who understands the role that the mind can play in both health and disease.

Tony and Chris discuss:

  • His background in traditional Chinese medicine
  • The nature of the placebo effect and why he thinks it should actually be called the meaning response
  • Studies of the placebo effect's opposite, the nocebo effect
  • The benefits of meditation
  • How to cultivate the witness and break the cycle of reactivity
  • The connection between mindfulness and health
  • How to start your own personal meditation practice

It's where they take a group of overweight people, move them out to an isolated compound, pair them with a trainer, and see who can lose the most amount of weight in the shortest amount of time. The show consistently gets huge ratings and it's made a star out of the program's biggest personality, Jillian Michaels.

Unfortunately, we see the damage shows like this have done. Losing weight at all cost, only to gain it back, and then some, as many Biggest Loser contestants have, only serves to perpetuate the good and the bad, black and white, binge and purge mentality that so many people suffer from, but what if there was a different way to do a TV show about weight loss? What if the contestants were able to pick their own trainers, work out and cook in their own homes, and had to show that they could sustain change even when their trainer wasn't yelling at them?

Well, that show does exist. It's called My Diet is Better Than Yours. The whole season is available now on demand and on streaming services like Hulu. What's even more amazing about My Diet is Better Than Yours is that Paleo Magazine Radio alumni Abel James was one of the coaches on the show, and his client, despite being the oldest, unhealthiest, and perhaps most unlikely contestant, gave the standout performance of the season.

In this episode of PMR, we’re joined first by Abel, and then in the second half of the show, by his client Kurt. In our conversations, we discuss -

  • How they got recruited to join a network reality TV show. (Hint, one of them used Twitter and the other a newspaper ad.)
  • What it's like to live on camera for weeks at a time
  • How Abel's wild version of Paleo stacked up against the competition, and why Kurt found it so appealing.
  • The results Kurt achieved over the course of the show and the controversial finale
  • How you can apply the principles Abel outlines in his book, The Wild Diet, to create sustainable, enjoyable weight loss.

Spoiler alert! During the interviews, we discuss the outcome of the show, so if you haven't seen My Diet is Better Than Yours yet, go watch it and then come back to this podcast!

All About AIP with Sarah Ballantyne PhD - PMR Eps 113

Thu, Feb 11, 2016

You've gone Paleo and cut out grains, beans, dairy, industrial seed oils, refined sugar, processed food and crappy animal products. You're eating grass-fed beef, drinking almond milk, and cooking with more herbs and spices, but despite all these changes, you're still not feeling one hundred percent. For most people, going Paleo is enough. For others, it isn't. Years of eating the sad, standard American diet can sometimes cause more damage than standard Paleo can fix, but this doesn't mean all hope is lost. This is where the autoimmune protocol comes in.

Our guest, Dr. Sarah Ballantyne, AKA the Paleo mom, is one of the foremost experts in the autoimmune protocol. Her two books on the subject, "The Paleo Approach" and "The Paleo Approach Cookbook" have both been New York Times best sellers. Sarah recently released her third book, The Healing Kitchen, co-authored by Alaena Haber. In this episode, Sarah and Tony discuss what makes the autoimmune protocol different from your standard Paleo diet, why paleo foods like nightshades and nuts might not be a good idea for some individuals, her favorite AIP super-foods, how quitting diet soda quick-started her own paleo transformation, what she did to make The Healing Kitchen an invaluable resource for those trying to go AIP, and the super exciting, not-so-secret secret project that she's been working on for the past year.

Why you should put bones in your broth with Dr. Kellyann Petrucci - PMR 112

Thu, Feb 04, 2016

Today's guest, Dr. Kelly Petrucci is a board certified naturopathic doctor, who built a practice that caters to celebrities and everyday folks alike by offering alternatives to pharmaceutical pills and surgeries. Instead of drugs, she prescribes anti-aging foods, bio-identical hormones, and nutritional supplements. She's the author of the Paleo Cookbook for Dummies series and co-authored Living Paleo for Dummies with Melissa Joulwan and Paleo Workouts for Dummies with Patrick Flynn. Her latest book is The Bone Broth Diet, which promotes a 21-day plan focused on nutrient-dense whole foods as well as plenty of bone broth.

In this episode Tony and Dr. Kellyann discuss:

  • Why she started to feel invisible in her middle age, and what she did about it.
  • What our innate nutritional blueprint tells us about maximizing health, performance, and longevity.
  • Why "no money and no time" are excuses she doesn't accept.
  • How she helps patients go Paleo without feeling deprived
  • Why becoming a natural fat burner with a healthy gut is so essential.
  • Why she starts off each day with fermented foods and bone broth.

How to MELT Chronic Pain with Sue Hitzmann - PMR #111

Wed, Jan 27, 2016

Sue Hitzmann is the New York Times best-selling author of the Melt Method, and a former massage therapist who realized that she needed to teach her clients to take better care of themselves between sessions. Sue used her knowledge of the body’s connective tissue to develop the MELT Method®, a simple self-treatment technique that helps people get out, and stay out, of chronic pain by getting out of "fight or flight" and into "rest and digest".

In this episode, Tony and Sue discuss:

+ What connective tissue is and why it's so important

+ The Aha moment when she made the connection between bodywork and total body wellness

+ How her practice went from treating 30 people a year to 500 people a year

+ Why she believes a soft foam roller is best

+ Why she is so passionate about training other practitioners in her MELT techniques

Paleo Magazine Radio Episode 110

Thu, Jan 21, 2016

It's hard to imagine that in a society obsessed with diet soda, reduced fat milk, and lean cuisines that anyone would intentionally try to eat more. Of course many people do overeat, but typically overeating is framed as a failure of self-control, a food addiction, or some other negative psychological or behavioral state.

Whether this perspective is valid or not is fodder for a future podcast episode, but the bottom line is that most of us live in a world defined by a level of caloric abundance never before seen in human history, therefore, it's logical that our challenge would be to willfully impose scarcity, aka calorie restriction in some form or another, in order to maintain our health.

But, there is one group in particular who has consistently bucked this trend without earning the social stigma typically attached to a overly hearty appetite. We're talking about athletes, and whether it's your local high school football team's epic pre-game meal or Michael Phelps’ olympic breakfasts, calories, pure and simple, are the name of the game.

Today's guest, Everett Rosette, is the son of an NFL defensive lineman and all he knew growing up was football and food. Filling out a linebackers frame required a serious dedication to eating, but years of ice cream infused protein shakes, taco bell, and McDonalds took their toll. He would be so tired from the pasta, pancakes, and pizza that he would need to chug red bull to get through games. He played in college ball for Alabama State, but even though he wasn't picked up by the NFL, his athlete eating habits continued.

On today's show, Everett and Tony discuss:

  • How walking into a Crossfit box changed his life
  • The chronic health condition that he resolved by going paleo
  • The steps he's taken to bring Crossfit and paleo to his office job
  • Why he's passionate about photography (hint: it's all about perspective)
  • The awesome experience he had shooting a cover for Paleo Fitness magazine
  • Why he was nervous going to his first Paleo fx
  • How he's learned to embrace his inner Paleo Fat kid

Upgrading Your Operating System with Dan Pardi

Fri, Jan 15, 2016

In this episode of Paleo Magazine Radio, host Tony Federico talks with Dan Pardi about how his father's battle with cancer taught him that information isn't everything. What he learned by talking to low-fat proponent Dr. Dean Ornish what a behavior model is, and how it can explain we make the choices we do. Why failure and hard work are essential ingredients in changing behavior. How he hopes to create a system that will serve up long term sustainable change to the masses. This conversation goes a little long - good news for those of you who are eager to get equipped with some knowledge bombs and start blowing up old habits and negative behaviors ASAP.
