Jeff Novitsky - UFC VP of Athlete Health and Performance

Jim McDonaldAuthor: Jim McDonald
Thu, Dec 22, 2016

(Old Feed)  If you downloaded this episode from iTunes, you may need to update your iOS to continue to receive podcast subscriptions.Jeff Novitsky, UFC’s vice president of athlete health and performance, is our guest for episode 178. He provides the connection between the UFC and the United States Anti-doping Agency or (USADA), the entity that’s contracted to oversee testing for performance enhancing drugs for the UFC (and USAPL Powerlifting, by the way). Many of you will know that in his previous job as a federal agent, Jeff was at the center of the investigations of Barry Bonds, Balco, Lance Armstrong, etc. In some circles, he was known as the Steroid Cop.It was very interesting to hear that those investigations were not originally centered on athletes, but on suppliers, and how his current job is really more about helping and supporting UFC athletes than anything else. He takes us inside Bones Jones latest suspension, and talks about some of the other athlete health initiatives UFC is involved in, like concussion testing and the effects of severe weight cuts.Mark Bell hosts with Michael Farr and Jim McDonaldVISIT OUR SPONSORSApeman StrongCompex USA[code: powercast for 28% off]AndBodybuilding.comVisit theSling Shot websiteSubscribe to Power Magazine.PowerCast theme and opening music bed by Aaron Moore of AddressandAttackProductions.com. PowerCast logo by Joseph Manzo.Follow us on Instagram@markbellspowercast,@marksmellybell,@silentmikke@jimmcdsttv

Urijah Faber | Team Alpha Male | UFC Fight Night

Jim McDonaldAuthor: Jim McDonald
Wed, Dec 14, 2016

Urijah Faber is our guest for episode 177. We’ve been trying to get him on the show since the beginning, and now we have him right before he takes his last trip to the octagon this Saturday night at UFC Fight Night here in Sacramento. As luck would have it, we had some last minute technical trouble, and I had to use a backup system to record this interview so it’s going to sound a little bit different. Sometimes you just have to punt. Faber’s 33-10 professional MMA record in the WEC and UFC is impressive, but he has an even better record as a businessman and entrepreneur. It was awesome to finally have the California Kid on the show.Mark Bell hosts with Michael Farr and Jim McDonaldVISIT OUR SPONSORSApeman Strong: http://www.apemanstrong.com/CompexUSA: https://www.compexusa.com/ [code: powercast for 28% off - Edge model excluded from this offer]And Bodybuilding.com: http://www.bodybuilding.com/Visit the Sling Shot website: http://www.HowMuchYaBench.netSubscribe to Power Magazine: http://ThePowerMagazine.comPowerCast theme and opening music bed by Aaron Moore of AddressandAttackProductions.com. PowerCast logo by Joseph Manzo.Follow us on Instagram @markbellspowercast, @marksmellybell, @silentmikke @jimmcdsttv

Cody "No Love" Garbrandt | Team Alpha Male | UFC 207

Jim McDonaldAuthor: Jim McDonald
Wed, Dec 07, 2016

We recorded this show with Cody “No Love” Garbrandt right after it was announced that he’d fighting Dominick Cruz in the co-main event of UFC 207 for the World Bantam Weight title in Las Vegas on December 30th . Cody fights out of Team Alpha Male here in Sacramento. This was a great interview. Maybe one of the best of 2016. Cody takes us on his journey from growing up as he says “in the struggle” to this title fight in the octagon. If you’re watching the video version, check out how his hands move as he’s explaining his approaches to other fighters. So fluid…and this video is probably the slowest you’re ever going to see the move. Next week on this show we finally have Urijah Faber. A guest we’ve been hoping to book from the very beginning.Mark Bell hosts with Michael Farr and Jim McDonaldVISIT OUR SPONSORSApeman Strong: http://www.apemanstrong.com/CompexUSA: https://www.compexusa.com/ [code: powercast for 28% off]And Bodybuilding.com: http://www.bodybuilding.com/Visit the Sling Shot website: http://www.HowMuchYaBench.netSubscribe to Power Magazine: http://ThePowerMagazine.comPowerCast theme and opening music bed by Aaron Moore of AddressandAttackProductions.com. PowerCast logo by Joseph Manzo.Follow us on Instagram @markbellspowercast, @marksmellybell, @silentmikke @jimmcdsttv

Wed, Oct 19, 2016

The title of this episode is inspired by something Mike said while we were recording…but sometimes that sums up the show pretty well. We talk about an often-quoted study on the effectiveness of steroids on the untrained, and whether or not we told a bunch of inappropriate ethnic jokes at Bart Kwan’s expense when he was on the show last year.We watch and comment on the live stream of USAPL Raw Nationals, and Mark rips into politics within the IPF and USAPL. Find Something You Love...

Jim McDonaldAuthor: Jim McDonald
Wed, Jun 22, 2016

This episode gave us a chance to catch up with each other and talk through some recent events. We covered a number of things, including a meet some of our gym members just competed in, a crazy Instagram video from Barbell Brigade you've got to check out, the sad situation of the mass shooting in Orlando, and a great loss to the strength community -- the passing of Chris Moore.Chris was one of the original hosts of the Barbell Shrugged podcast. He was a guy who was at least as interested in the strength of the mind and the heart as he was the strength of the body. The title of this episode refers to a piece of advice that Chris liked to give, "Find something you love and let it kill you." His dream of producing high quality, thought-provoking content is continuing with Iron Heart Studios. If you feel so moved, you can contribute at https://www.gofundme.com/mooreironheartThe world can be a scary place, and none of us knows what's around the corner for ourselves, our family, our friends, or our heroes. Tom Finn - Still Crazy After All These Beers

Jim McDonaldAuthor: Jim McDonald
Wed, May 18, 2016

Our guest for episode 147 is Tom Finn. He’s an incredibly strong powerlifter from the Chicago area, but you might know him from the clips of him doing crazy lifting stunts that keep showing up on Fox Sports One and the buzzer -- like benching a flaming barbell in the back of a moving vehicle or walking a 600 lbs. squat out into the parking lot. This one sounds a little different than normal because Jim McD was on vacation, so it was recorded with different equipment. Tom actually tore his pec while lifting in Sacramento and has since had surgery. We definitely wish him a speedy recovery.Mark Bell hosts with Michael Farr. Production by Jim McDonald.EndFragment
