Thu, Dec 22, 2016

Jack McCallum is the most important, respected basketball writer of the last 50 years. We talk to Captain Jack about how basketball players will respond to a trump presidency, the career resurrection of my kids and toni, and the differences – from the three-point shot to basic muscle tone – of players in the league. I also speak about what it would look like if Donald Trump could name our sports commissioners. We respond to a hotline call about Jim Brown meeting the President-Elect, and finally we have a first-ever Just Stand Down award, handed to the Minnesota football team.

Wed, Nov 16, 2016

Legendary sports sociologist Dr. Harry Edwards has been working with Colin Kaepernick and speaking in locker rooms around the country. We speak with him about the recent elections and the challenges as well as the opportunities it creates for this new generation of athlete-activists. We also ask Dr. Edwards what inspiration can be drawn from the life of his old friend Muhammad Ali. In addition, I have some choice words about critics of Colin Kaepernick's decision not to vote, we have an extended just stand up award section for every athlete already standing up to Trump and we take calls about how folks are dealing with the altered political landscape.

Going Full Dissident with Howard Bryant

Author: Dave Zirin / Panoply
Fri, Nov 11, 2016

ESPN The Magazine's Howard Bryant joins the podcast to talk about the only issue that matters. The election of Donald Trump was a slap in the face to anyone who believes that racism, sexual assault and anti-immigrant sentiment are are bad. But the election of Trump - with a minority of the vote remember - is far more complicated that just saying it's racism. It's the Democratic Party, it's the Clinton campaign, and it's the way working class people - white, black and brown - have been crushed in this country. We also have an inspiring Just Stand Up award to the only three-time winner Wisconsin's Nigel Hayes.

Author: Dave Zirin / Panoply
Wed, Oct 26, 2016

In a week dominated by stories about former New York Giants place kicker Josh Brown and the NFL's continual coverup of domestic violence, we speak to Jessica Luther, author of the book “Unsportsmanlike Conduct: College Football and the Politics of Rape.” This week I also have some choice words of my own about the Giants’ shameful handling of the Josh Brown incident and why Roger Goodell should, in my opinion, no longer be employed. Say Everything: John Cusack on Kaepernick, The Cubs, Snowden & Things that Can and Cannot Be Said

Author: Dave Zirin / Panoply
Fri, Oct 21, 2016

John Cusack is a renowned actor, best known for classics like Being John Malkovich, Better Off Dead, Say Anything, and for my money, the greatest sports movie of all time, Eight Men Out. Cusack is also a serious political thinker with a new book “Things That Can and Cannot Be Said: Essays and Conversations,” co-written with Indian author Arundhati Roy about a range of subjects from patriotism, war, resistance, and empire – most centrally a reflection on a trip Cusack took with Roy and famed whistleblower of the Pentagon Papers, Daniel Ellsberg to meet with NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden. We speak with Cusack on his book, his beloved Chicago Cubs, patriotism, the anthem protests of Colin Kaepernick and I slip in a couple of movie questions as well. I also have some "choice words" about Kaepernick's first start of the season in Buffalo and “Just Stand Up” awards go to Wisconsin Badger Nigel Hayes and LA Dodger Adrian Gonzalez.

Not In My Locker Room: DeAndre Levy of the Detroit Lions Speaks Out

Author: Dave Zirin / Panoply
Sat, Oct 15, 2016

In an attempt to excuse his own repugnant behavior, Donald Trump unwittingly started a real conversation on what he dubbed “locker room talk” about sexual violence against women. Our guest, Detroit Lions linebacker DeAndre Levy, is the rare pro athlete who is awake to this issue. Levy writes, advocates, and fundraises to fight domestic and sexual abuse. We also speak to him about the Kaepernick protests. Then, we have ’Choice Words’ about my own experience with "locker room talk" and the ‘Just Stand Up’ award goes to Mets broadcaster Ron Darling for speaking out against the “rage of the inarticulate.”

Author: Dave Zirin / Panoply
Thu, Oct 06, 2016

We speak to Dr. Walter Beach, starter on the Cleveland Browns 1964 Championship team and member of the famed Muhammad Ali Summit about the politics of sports and racism: what has changed and what remains the same from his days in the NFL. He is as deep a thinker as you will find and this will "wow" you. We also speak about Colin Kaepernick's comments about the Trump=Clinton elections, the gorilla taking the field with an All Lives Matter sign, and we have a Just Stand Up award for a player released from the NFL after taking a knee in London, and the East Carolina band.

John Carlos: “Follow Kaepernick to the Rainbow”

Author: Dave Zirin / Panoply
Wed, Sep 28, 2016

We bring sports and politics icon John Carlos in-studio to talk about how it feels to see a new generation of athletes replicate his anthem protests of 1968. Dr. Carlos - who is having a wild week - also speaks to us about the opening of the new National Museum of African American History and Culture where he was part of the unveiling of a statue of himself, and two other two men on that iconic medal stand: Tommie Smith and Peter Norman. Carlos is also in town to visit the White House. He speaks about what it feels like to be re-embraced and who he still feels owes him a damn apology (spoiler: it's Brent Musburger.) We also have some choice words for Mike Ditka, we take listener calls and a Just Stand Up Award for the Castlemont Knights football team, showing some A plus solidarity with the protest of Colin Kaepernick.

We also have choice words about everyone who says that they support Colin Kaepernick but just "disapprove" of his methods. The Fire Last Time: Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf

Author: Dave Zirin / Panoply
Wed, Sep 07, 2016

Before Colin Kaepernick, there was Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf. In 1996, the Denver Nuggets guard said that on principle he could not stand for the national anthem because the flag in many countries represents "oppression and tyranny." He was fined, suspended, attacked, and yet we will hear on this week's podcast why he has no regrets. We will also hear what advice Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf has for Kaepernick and why he holds the words of Arundhati Roy and Malcolm X close to his heart. Abdul-Rauf also answers listeners questions including what it felt like to drop 51 points on John Stockton. This is - in my humble opinion - the best interview we've done in the history of the show.

We also have some Choice Words about Megan Rapinoe's decision to stand - or kneel - in solidarity with Kaepernick. We also answer a listener call from Patrick, who left a message on our hotline: 401-436-EDGE (3343.) Our question for next week is: what athlete do you want to hear from on the issues that Colin Kapernick has raised. Lastly we have our "just stand up" award for someone who has yet to become visible.

Swimming With Sharks: Kaepernick's Protest, Backlash and Resistance

Author: Dave Zirin / Panoply
Wed, Aug 31, 2016

We speak to Olympic gold-medal swimmer Anthony Ervin about Colin Kaepernick's anthem protest against police violence, Ervin's book ‘Chasing Water,’ and life since winning gold in Rio. Then, choice words about, and then from, an athletic activist who walked in Kaepernick's path, Toni Smith–Thompson. The ‘Just Stand Up’ award goes to Khaled Beydoun for his look at how Kaepernick is being dealt with in the sewers of sports radio. Finally, we answer a phone message from listener Ronnie that asked the Edge of Sports hotline why we speak about athletic resistance at all.

Speak your mind by calling (401) 236-3343 (EDGE.) Let us know what you think of Colin Kaepernick’s actions. Also, at this crucial moment, which sports talkers are doing it right, and who is making a fool of themselves? (401) 236-3343 (EDGE.)

Breaking: Colin Kaepernick and the backlash he faces. Guest: NFLPA head DeMaurice Smith

Author: Dave Zirin / Panoply
Sat, Aug 27, 2016

San Francisco 49er Colin Kaepernick decided to sit during the national anthem because he is "not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses Black people and people of color." In a special edition of the podcast, we have DeMaurice Smith, Executive Director of the NFL Players Association who speaks on what the union can, and cannot do, to protect Kaepernick, and why the NFLPA - and not the NFL - is his "family" at this moment in time.

We want to hear your opinion of Kaepernick’s actions and statements or what you thought of DeMaurice Smith’s interview. Call the Edge of Sports hotline at (401) 426-EDGE (3343.)

Real Olympic Drama: Caster Semenya, Feyisa Lilesa and Rio

Author: Dave Zirin / Panoply
Fri, Aug 26, 2016

As Feyisa Lilesa of Ethiopia crossed the finish line to win silver in the olympic marathon in Rio, he raised his arms and crossed them above his head in protest against his own government. With this simple act, Lilesa brought the world’s attention to the plight of his Oromo people and the struggle to keep their land out of Ethiopia’s ruling party's hands. Feyisa Lilesa has etched himself into Olympic protest history and we salute him with the ‘Just Stand Up’ award. But first, I speak with scholar Katrina Karkazis about Caster Sememya. Not only did the South African blaze past all her competitors for gold in the women’s 800 meters, Semenya did so under the most intense media scrutiny, while guarded by an ever-present security detail, and with her sport’s governing bodies, the IOC and IAAF, still governing women’s bodies in invasive and illogical ways. ’Choice Words’ is about the real Olympic drama, which begins now that the games are over. And finally, we hear from listeners who called the Edge of Sports hotline at: (401) 236-3343 (EDGE). This week, we want to know: who was your most iconic athlete or performance of the Rio Games? And why?

In the run-up to Brazil’s year of mega-events, Theresa Williamson made her website RioOnWatch.org into an essential independent news source. In our final Olympics podcast, Theresa Williamson joins me for a wide-ranging and insightful talk that you will not find on any other show. We’ll also stop by a party at the oft-discussed Vila Aut?dromo, site of a high-profile battle for over residents rights that is just a stone’s throw away from Olympic Park. My ‘Choice Words’ are about the stalwart Brazilian teachers who went on strike in Rio, and the ‘Just Stand Up’ award goes to Anthony Ervin, 35-year-old gold medalist and author of: “Chasing Water: Elegy of an Olympian.” Special thanks to our youngest guest, nine-year-old Kay, who summed up the Olympic effect on Rio so well: “It means so many things, and most of them aren’t good.”

Edge of Sports Hotline: (401) 236-3343 (EDGE). This week, we want to know: What would you do if the Olympics came to your town? Buy tickets? Volunteer? Perhaps protest?

Author: Dave Zirin / Panoply
Sun, Aug 14, 2016

We are in Olympic Rio shining light on the dark corners of these games. First up: Jules Boykoff, a razor-sharp critic of sports culture and the author of “Power Games: A Political History of the Olympics.” Then, Stephanie Reist, a PhD candidate from Duke, based in Rio and writing about the Rio suburbs for the essential site RioOnWatch.org’Choice Words’ is a column about the intoxicating nature of the Olympics - and resistance to them. The ‘Just Stand Up’ award goes to Gabby Douglas in response to utterly inane criticism of this great athlete. Finally, we share messages from you, our listeners, left on our our Edge of Sports hotline: 401-236-3343 (EDGE.) We asked: were you still going to watch the Olympics, or had the controversies dampened your excitement? Thank you to Sam, Toby, Jacob, Andy and Candace. Road To Rio, Russia, and The Grief Of The Khans

Author: Dave Zirin / Panoply
Thu, Aug 04, 2016

The Olympics are here and as I head to Rio, Edge of Sports has David W. Larkin, an attorney who focuses on the corruption of sports organizations like the International Olympic Committee, about the decision to not suspend Russia from the Olympics. We ask him which is more corrupt: the IOC or FIFA? His analysis may surprise you. We also have some "choice words" about the Rio Olympics - of course - and why ten years ago, almost no one thought having Brazil as a host was a bad idea. But I start the show by speaking about the Khan family, and remember when a Gold Star Mother was attacked ten years ago because she stood up to the war that took her son's life. I speak about Cindy Sheehan. The Just Stand Up award goes to activist WNBA players who refused to bow to NBA and WNBA chiefs Adam Silver and Lisa Borders, and won.

The Politics of Basketball ...or... Keeping Adam Silver Honest

Author: Dave Zirin / Panoply
Tue, Jul 26, 2016

In response to North Carolina’s discriminatory HB-2 'bathroom bill,' NBA Commissioner Adam Silver stood up for LGBTQ rights and pulled the 2017 All-Star game from Charlotte. Yet in the very same week, Silver and WNBA President Lisa Borders levied fines on female players who donned black t-shirts in pregame warmups to support the Black Lives Matter movement. To understand this tricky political moment, we have Howard Bryant, a friend of the show, author, commentator and columnist for ESPN. Then, in ’Choice Words’ we have a column about this new era of player power in basketball, and the ‘Just Stand Up’ award goes to WNBA players Tina Charles, Tanisha Wright and Swin Cash for standing up and speaking out.

Today there is largely universal praise for the ESPY statements of Carmelo Anthony, Chris Paul, Dwayne Wade and LeBron James. But what about athletes who stood up in much more difficult environment? Today we take a critical look at the ESPY statement with 2012 NBA first round draft pick Royce White. This is an NBA-level talent who has been pushed out of the league for standing up. We talk to Royce about the ESPYS and his future. I also have some "Choice words" about the way this discussion of athlete activism is being framed in the #BlackLivesMatter era.

Muhammad Ali's Funeral: Live From Louisville

Author: Dave Zirin / Panoply
Thu, Jun 16, 2016

Today we bring you the emotions, sounds, and voices of Muhammad Ali's funeral in Louisville. This was a day that will go down in history as the last act of resistance by the 20th century’s most iconic fighter. People came to pay respects from near and far, both young and old, in every shade of color, media professionals and everyday folks alike; all bound together by a love for Muhammad Ali. This show is dedicated to our LBGT - and specifically Latino LGBT - brothers and sisters who were killed in Orlando the very day after Ali's funeral. We address this horrific juxtaposition with a statement against anti-LGBT and anti-Muslim bigotry.

We break down roller derby, why it has proven to be more hospitable to trans athletes than other sports, and what it's like to be trans in Texas - a place where scapegoating has run rampant. In addition to Fifi, I have some Choice Words about anti-trans bigotry and the 2017 Super Bowl. Finally my Just Stand Up award goes to an icon of my sports-loving youth, NFL Hall of Famer Harry Carson, and his efforts to ban tackle football for kids.

Clap Back on WaPo's Bad Poll with Jacqueline Keeler

Author: Dave Zirin / Panoply
Fri, May 27, 2016

The Washington Post caused a furor when they released a new poll, claiming that 90% of Native Americans are not offended by the home football team’s controversial name. We read this article with great interest and came away with more questions than answers. Today, we offer the Post, and our listeners, a moral reality check with Jacqueline Keeler, Navajo/Yankton Dakota Sioux writer and co-founder of the group ’Eradicating Offensive Native Mascotry.’ Then, Dave reads a response from Washington Post polling manager Scott Clement, and finally, Dave updates his open letter to Dan Snyder, originally published in Grantland.

The Olympics and the Battle for Rio's Future

Author: Dave Zirin / Panoply
Fri, May 20, 2016

This is the Olympics edition of the Edge of Sports podcast, and it is a news making edition of the show. I am just back from Rio de Janeiro snd the show reflects this in rather dramatic fashion. I sat down face to face with the mayor of Rio de Janeiro Eduardo Paes for a no holds barred discussion about the Olympics, displacement, and corruption and whether Rio is ready to host the games. Then, I sit down with Rio-based activist Theresa Williamson from Catalytic Communities. Theresa does a point-by-point rebuttal to Mayor Paes. Then I have some 'Choice Words' about the Zika virus and the removal of Brazil's President Dilma Rousseff. And lastly, the 'Just Stand Up Award' goes to the independent journalists of RioOnWatch.org.

Author: Dave Zirin / Panoply
Fri, May 13, 2016

This week, an extensive interview with Pink Floyd founder Roger Waters on Israel, Palestine, US politics, and the power of music. We also discuss the role of sports in these ongoing discussions. The impetus for this interview was a new documentary that Waters narrates called The Occupation of the American Mind" put out by the Media Education Foundation.  I also have some choice words about traveling to Rio - where I will be when you are listening to this pod - to look at the pre-Olympic planning. Will report back! Lastly, our Just Stand Up Award goes to the resistors on the ground in Rio, still standing up for working people in the face of the Olympics.

Author: Dave Zirin / Panoply
Thu, May 05, 2016

Michael Sam, the first openly gay player drafted into the NFL, tells his fascinating story to Dave Zirin, on-stage at University of Colorado Denver. Despite a great college career at Mizzou and slot in the 2014 draft, Sam hasn’t found a home in the NFL. Today on Edge of Sports, Michael Sam weighs the undeniable good he has done for society with honest reflections on what could have been different. Then, our ‘Just Stand Up’ award goes to Julie DiCaro, who, along with fellow journalist Sarah Spain, helped to call out sexist internet trolls with the powerful video ‘More Than Mean’ shot by the ‘Just Not Sports Podcast.’ We salute you.

Glenn Greenwald, the Rio Olympics & Our Tribute to Prince

Author: Dave Zirin / Panoply
Fri, Apr 29, 2016

Despite heavy hearts due to the passing of Prince, we are honored to welcome one of the most prominent journalists of our time, co-founder of The InterceptGlenn Greenwald. We speak to Greenwald primarily about the political crisis roiling Brazil and the effect it could have on the 2016 Summer Olympics… as well as the effect the Olympics could have on this political crisis. Greenwald is based in Rio and his recent writings on this subject are vital for anyone seeking to understand what is happening, with the Games less than 100 days away. Dave also pays a heartfelt tribute to Prince, reading a column about what it meant to go to college in the Twin Cities, the place Prince ruled. And sure enough, our ‘Just Stand Up’ award is to his Purple Highness for turning the 2007 Super Bowl on its head.

Student Athletes vs. Nike Sweatshops: Isabelle Teare of Georgetown Sailing

Author: Dave Zirin / Panoply
Fri, Apr 22, 2016

This week, a show for all the student-athletes, student-activists, and the advocates like us who cheer them on. Isabelle Teare is a member of the Georgetown University Sailing Team. She’s also a leader in ‘Athletes and Advocates for Workers,’ a movement that’s pressured Georgetown’s administration and athletic department to confront Nike sweatshop abuses. Despite the school's long and entwined relationship with Nike, Teare and her cohort are winning. Then, comedian W. Kamau Bell has a new CNN program, ‘United Shades of America,’ debuting Sunday at 10 Eastern. We will find out why he is interviewing Klansmen on deserted country roads and what the mission is of this altogether original show. Then, a column read about Steph Curry's small- but significant- stand against anti-LGBT legislation in North Carolina. Finally, our ‘Just Stand Up’ award comes in defense of Cardale Jones, a man who deserves nothing but a larger platform for his critical views of big time college football. We thank our intern Dustin Foote for all his dedicated work over the last few months. This episode is dedicated to the memory of Prince Rogers Nelson. We will have a full tribute to Prince on next week’s show.

Robert Lipsyte Suffers No Fools, Takes No Prisoners

Author: Dave Zirin / Panoply
Fri, Apr 15, 2016

Today's guest hold the informal title of "greatest living sportswriter," Robert Lipsyte. Lipsyte distinguished himself with multiple stints at the New York Times, covering Muhammad Ali when he was still known as Cassius Clay. He is also noted for his recent tenure as an unflinching Ombudsman at ESPN. The author of celebrated books such as "SportsWorld: An American Dreamland" and his memoir “An Accidental Sportswriter,” Lipsyte offers Dave Zirin unvarnished opinions on the likes of Muhammad Ali, Billie Jean King, Bill Simmons and ‘Grantland,’ Derek Jeter and ‘The Player’s Tribune,’ the delays besetting ESPN’s ‘The Undefeated,’ Donald Trump, and his most indelible memory in sports: helping a Nigerian boxer named Dick Tiger mail his medal back to the Queen of England in protest.

Ken Burns: "Jackie Robinson is a true, authentic hero because he is complex."

Author: Dave Zirin / Panoply
Wed, Apr 06, 2016

This week, we have the most acclaimed historical documentary filmmaker on earth, Ken Burns. He made ‘Baseball’ and ‘Jazz,’ and now we talk to Burns about his  new two-part PBS documentary 'Jackie Robinson.' It's a powerful back-and-forth about the actuality of Robinson's complicated legacy that goes beyond puff-pieces and Hollywood-myth-making. Burns connects Robinson's struggle to the #BlackLivesMatter movement, Trump, and the warmed over racism that infuses the modern Republican Party. In our ‘Choice Words’ segment, Dave speaks in detail about one of the unsung heroes of Robinson's journey, radical sports journalist Lester Rodney. And for the ‘Just Stand Up Award,’ the loudest possible solidarity with the U.S. Women's National Soccer Team and they push for far wages and equality.

Remembering Miles & Phife with Don Cheadle & Bobbito Garcia

Author: Dave Zirin / Panoply
Thu, Mar 31, 2016

Today we pay homage to two departed legends of music. First, we have Don Cheadle, star and director of the Miles Davis biopic “Miles Ahead.” Then, DJ Bobbito Garcia remembers his friend Malik Taylor, AKA Phife Dawg of A Tribe Called Quest who passed away last week. Dave’s ‘Choice Words’ are call for NBA Commissioner to move the 2017 All-Star weekend away from Charlotte in light of a recent North Carolina anti-trans law, and a somber ‘Just Stand Up’ goes to Dave’s departed friend Kevin Turner. The former Alabama and NFL running back lived with dignity and strength before succumbing to ALS a week ago.

Judah Friedlander

Author: Dave Zirin / Panoply
Fri, Mar 25, 2016

Amid political chaos, Edge of Sports looks to a comic mind for order: author and actor Judah Friedlander. As Frank Rossitano on 30 Rock, Friedlander was known for his “World Champ” trucker hats, and it does not escape Judah that Donald Trump’s “Make America Great Again” cap bears more than a passing resemblance to his signature look. Dave Zirin and Judah talk politics, comedy and ping pong, recorded in a Montgomery County, Maryland library. Then, Dave has some ‘Choice Words’ about baseball diplomacy in Cuba laced with music by Machito, and the ‘Just Stand Up’ award goes to Serena Williams for rebuking Raymond Moore, former director of the Indian Wells tennis tournament disgraced by his comments belittling female players.

Author: Dave Zirin / Panoply
Wed, Mar 16, 2016

As college basketball fans descend into March Madness, Edge of Sports offers a wake-up call from Dr. Harry Edwards, renowned sports sociologist and author of the seminal text “The Revolt of the Black Athlete.” Dr. Edwards prescribes a stringent tonic for the NCAA’s ills: a complete dissolution and ground-up reformation focused on academics and athlete equity. Our host Dave Zirin also offers his ’Choice Words’ to the NCAA, drawing inspiration from John Oliver’s brilliant 2015 sendup. Finally, the ‘Just Stand Up’ award goes to Rory Fanning, an Army Vet and co-author of Craig Hodges’ forthcoming memoir who was among a group of protesters that shut down Donald Trump’s planned rally in Chicago.

Author: Dave Zirin / Panoply
Thu, Mar 10, 2016

This is one of those dream shows for us at Edge of Sports. We’ve spoken to Kareem. We’ve spoken to Martina. Now we talk to Mick, as in pro wrestling legend Mick Foley. The hardcore legend is also a militant anti-sexist, a Tori Amos fan, and a national spokesperson for RAINN – the Rape Abuse Incest National Network. We in addition get him to answer whether Pro Wrestling deserves some of the blame for the rise of Donald Trump. To help me, I have my friend pro-wrestling aficionado Damian Smith riding shotgun. Also, in our Choice Words section, I speak about the alarming rise in the use of “Trump” as a racial slur at high school sporting events. Lastly, in the just stand up award, a big shout out to the first US Olympian to compete while wearing a hijab: fencer Ibtihaj Muhammad.

#NerdlandForever and Hall Of Famers Willie Lanier & Ken Houston

Author: Dave Zirin / Panoply
Fri, Mar 04, 2016

We have a show this week that fills me with pride and anger. The pride comes from the fact that we interview two NFL Hall of Fame players who grew up in the Jim Crow south, went to Historically Black Colleges, and played in the 1960s: Willie Lanier and Ken Houston. We hear their stories and it is – to put it mildly - powerful stuff. The anger comes with our opening topic: my thoughts on the cancelling of MSNBC’s The Melissa Harris Perry Show, a place where I was regularly accorded a platform to discuss the politics of sports. After giving my own thoughts, I speak to original Melissa Harris Perry Show producer - and current MTV News journalist - Jamil Smith about the abrupt cancellation of the show. I also give the Just Stand Up Award to a college football team trying to end sexual assault.

Martina Navratilova: The Refusal to Go Backward

Author: Dave Zirin / Panoply
Thu, Feb 18, 2016

Edge of Sports welcomes Martina Navratilova, one of the greatest tennis players ever and one of host Dave Zirin’s political-athlete heroes. Martina made history not just with her utter on-court dominance of the 1980s, but through a remarkable journey away from her family in totalitarian Czechoslovakia, and to a life where she lives today as a political, open LGBT American. This week’s column read is “The Past Is Never Dead: Peyton Manning and Today’s Jock-Rape Culture at Tennessee,” and we give “Just Stand Up Awards” to musicians Win Butler and Kendrick Lamar.

First, we discuss the indomitable of Cam Newton with former NFL pro, Harvard Business School grad and columnist Domonique Foxworth. Next, we get in ‘formation’ for Beyonc? with Dr. Brittney Cooper AKA Professor Crunk, who schools us on the rich symbolism of Beyonc?’s latest cultural touchstone. Then, Dave Zirin delivers an antiseptic column read: “Super Bowl 50: Brought to You by Toe Fungus,” and finally, a smackdown challenge to Rob Lowe (yes, the actor) who had some choice words for Cam Newton on twitter.

Noam Chomsky Super Bowl Special & Cam Newton: The Bridge to Somewhere

Author: Dave Zirin / Panoply
Thu, Feb 04, 2016

The Edge of Sports Super Bowl Blockbuster Special features radical linguistic theorist Noam Chomsky giving his first-ever sports interview. Today, the MIT professor drops knowledge on the gladiatorial spectacle capturing the world's attention, but far from a sports-grinch, you'll also hear Chomsky re-live his early love affair with baseball. He assesses the phenomena of Bernie Sanders and Donald Trump after the Iowa caucuses, and to top it all off - he even gives the long-awaited Chomsky Super Bowl pick. Dave’s column this week is about transformational Panthers quarterback Cam Newton, and the ‘Just Stand Up’ award goes to Greek soccer teams who stood up for Syrian refugees by sitting down.

Who Killed Lawrence Phillips?

Author: Dave Zirin / Panoply
Fri, Jan 22, 2016

Lawrence Phillips was a phenomenal football talent, a back-to-back National Champion at the University of Nebraska and a top NFL draft pick in 1996. But a childhood marred by trauma and violence undercut Phillips’ promise of a fruitful life. Despite his obvious athletic gifts, a pattern of disturbing off-field behavior pushed Phillips out of the league and into legal trouble. In 2008, Lawrence Phillips entered Kern Valley State Prison. He would never get to see the outside again. In January of 2015, while awaiting trial for the alleged murder of his cell-mate, Phillips was found dead in his cell - a suspected suicide. Today, Dave Zirin seeks clarity and lessons from the tragic life of Lawrence Phillips. Our guests are Damon Benning, a Cornhusker teammate of Phillips and a current radio host in Lincoln, Howard University Professor Christian-Dotson Pierson, and Neil Irvin, Executive Director of ‘Men Can Stop Rape.’

This week, Edge of Sports is traveling to LA to interview Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. Instead of taking the week off, Dave Zirin is dropping into your podcast feed to call for questions and give listeners a window into his thought process going into this once-in-a-lifetime interview. Dave also reads his current column from The Nation about Lebron James and the competing opinions about his lack of comment after Tamir Rice’s police killers scandalously avoided indictment. Finally, the ‘Just Stand Up’ award goes to Baltimore-based activist Tariq Tour? who started this conversation by thinking up the hashtag #NoJusticeNoLeBron.

A Chamique Holdsclaw Christmas

Author: Dave Zirin / Panoply
Thu, Dec 24, 2015

Today, women’s basketball great Chamique Holdsclaw joins us to discuss the recent comments of Gilbert Arenas, and her own fascinating history in the game. For years, the #1 WNBA draft pick waged a silent battle for mental wellness, but she eventually chose to go public, becoming a powerful advocate and role model. Her journey is chronicled in the film ‘Mind Game.’ Then, we visit with Sporting News columnist David Steele, who found himself in the crosshairs of Trump-Nation and Patriot-Nation after criticizing Tom Brady for evading a political stance while displaying a “MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN” hat in his locker. Finally, the ‘Just Stand Up Award’ goes to NBA referee Bill Kennedy, who came out as a gay man as a show of pride and defiance in the face of Rajon Rondo’s on-court slurs. Thanks for listening. The Edge of Sports team wishes all our listeners a safe and happy holiday.

NBA Champs Craig Hodges & Samaki Walker Speak Out

Author: Dave Zirin / Panoply
Thu, Dec 10, 2015

Today, we learn what it’s like to be blackballed from your job for speaking your mind, and what it means to play pro ball…in Syria. Craig Hodges was a three-point specialist during the dawn of the Jordan-era Bulls, who won their first of six titles in 1991. As the team visited the White House for its obligatory photo-op, Hodges donned a Dashiki to highlight his African heritage and hand-delivered then-President Bush a letter about racism in America. The next time Hodges came up for a contract, Hodges found himself frozen out of the league by agents and teams alike. Hodges tells the inside story of that consequential time in his life, and gives his thoughts on present-day Chicago, which is reeling after the police murder of Laquan McDonald and the subsequent cover-up. We also hear from Samaki Walker, NBA Champion with the Lakers in 2002 who finished his playing career in Syria, of all places. Walker is the only NBA vet to suit up in Syria, and shares an incredibly unique perspective on their culture. Then, Dave reads a column calling out Donald Trump’s dangerous rhetoric on Muslims, and finally, the ‘Just Stand Up’ award goes the US Women’s National Soccer Team who refused to play on a substandard field, giving their fans a lesson in real backbone. Dave Columns: 1) http://www.thenation.com/article/why-donald-trump-wants-to-render-muslim-athletes-invisible/2) http://www.thenation.com/article/laquan-mcdonald-and-the-politics-of-black-athletes/   3) US Women's National Soccer Team statement: http://www.theplayerstribune.com/uswnt-match-canceled-field-conditions/ Craig Hodges: http://twitter.com/craighodgesnbaSamaki Walker: http://twitter.com/samaki_walker & http://samakiwalker.com Tweet Dave at https://twitter.com/edgeofsportsEmail edgeofsports@slate.com Music:Alan Parsons - Sirius (Pretty Lights Remix) https://soundcloud.com/prettylightsSonido Berserk - Oh! https://soundcloud.com/sonidoberzerk, https://soundcloud.com/tentoesturboBaby Namboos - Ancoats 2 Zambia - Dillinja Remix (Kator Footwork Bootleg) https://soundcloud.com/katorskidnbFranjazzco - Get Up http://soundcloud.com/franjazzco, https://soundcloud.com/tentoesturboJohn Coltrane - Giant Steps

Thu, Nov 26, 2015

Orioles Owner John Angelos Gets Real, Son of Nun Raps In-Studio In April, protests in Baltimore over the police murder of Freddie Gray reached the gates of Camden Yards during a game. In response, Orioles front office chief John Angelos refused to vilify the protesters, instead offering a nuanced history of public policies that sapped cities like Baltimore of their well-paying jobs, tax base and working-class opportunities. As Baltimore braces for the accused officers' trials, we speak to John Angelos about his bold statement, the healing comments of O’s manager Buck Showalter and star outfielder Adam Jones, and the role of sports in shaping our society. We also hear Baltimore rapper, activist, educator, and former medic ‘Son of Nun’ spit a verse about awareness and social justice. The Soul of Sports After Paris & Beirut

Author: Dave Zirin / Panoply

“Intellectual and material walls are not the way to progress.” The words of today’s guest, George Atallah from the NFLPA, in response to knee-jerk bigotry against refugees after attacks in Paris and Beirut. Atallah’s own family fled Lebanon’s civil war for the United States decades ago and he denounces passionately, as Aaron Rogers did on Sunday, the prejudicial ideologies which lead to hardened hearts and wrongheaded policies on all sides. Then our host, Dave Zirin, expounds on the conscientious sentiment so aptly expressed by French Forward for the Utah Jazz, Rudy Gobert, when he tweeted: “Ne Vous Laissez Pas Manipuler,” or as Dave translates, #staywoke. Finally, the ‘Just Stand Up’ award goes to the Northwestern women’s basketball team, who modified their warmup shirts to read: “We stand with Mizzou,” also issuing a strong statement of solidarity. The all-new Edge of Sports podcast is here, and our host Dave Zirin calls on the Hard Rhymer himself, the legendary Chuck D of Public Enemy, to bless the first show. As it turns out, this activist lion of hip-hop actually had boyhood dreams of becoming a sportscaster. Chuck tells the story of Public Enemy’s national breakthrough on Soul Train, revels in the greatness of Ali, praises LeBron James as a modern-day thought leader, and then…Chuck D bigs up his pilates instructor. Also in the studio is Christian Dotson-Pierson, a PhD candidate at Howard University. Her focus is media advocacy of concussion awareness, handy expertise for a reading of Dave’s latest column in The Nation magazine, entitled: “Why Does Anybody Play Football Anymore?” Finally, the ‘Just Stand Up’ award goes to Atlanta Hawks forward Thabo Sefolosha for defending himself in court against the NYPD, and winning.
