On the NBA Beat Ep. 2.31: Dane Carbaugh: Blazers Approaching “Make-It or Break-It Offseason”

Author: Almighty Baller Radio
Fri, Apr 21, 2017

The Portland Trail Blazers’ prospects of advancing look grim, but the future is fairly bright, according to NBC Sports Pro Basketball Talk’s Dane Carbaugh, who also runs the popular YouTube channel, Dane Not Dan, where he breaks down the NBA in video form. Compared to the previous season, the relative strength of the 2016-17 Western Conference relegated the Blazers to the No. 8 seed where they had the misfortune of drawing the otherworldly Warriors in an all-but-impossible first-round series. With Golden State up 2-0 and prized trade acquisition Jusuf Nurkic nursing a leg injury, much of the conversation’s focus turns to how the Blazers can best solidify their roster and improve defensive performance. Importantly, Dane also explores the strengths and challenges that come with the Damian Lillard-C.J. McCollum backcourt pairing. Blazing hot excerpts can be found below: 3:26-4:14 While the typical Blazers fan would love to see Jusuf Nurkic grace the court against the Warriors, Dane advocates for a more cautious approach: “The Nurkic trade, I think, really re-solidified his [GM Neil Olshey’s] position; the same thing for [head coach] Terry Stotts. So nobody’s going into this playoff series thinking, ‘We need to win a series or win a game, even, to save someone’s job.’ No one’s going to get fired because of that. And on the flip side, you have the guy that they believe is going to be the third guy for this team for years to come, and so I don’t see a reason to risk him [worsening his injury] in any way, shape or form. He’s got a non-displaced fracture in his leg, and he’s a 7-foot tall, 280-pound man, and it’s the Portland Trail Blazers; maybe just let him rest. So it’s possible he comes back for Game 3. If he comes back at all, that is the game he’s going to do it in. If they’re down 3-0, there’s no reason for him to play in Game 4, so it would have to be Game 3. I don’t think he should come back at all.” 8:35-9:17 Our guest details Golden State’s Game 2 defensive adjustments that so effectively combatted Portland’s explosive guards: “I think what they really did was they figured out what points on the floor Damian and C.J. were attacking to and where on their drives. I saw a lot more drives that were ineffective as opposed to the first game in which both Damian and C.J. had the ability to hit floaters or runners from certain points on the floor where they were very clearly trying to avoid some of the shot-blocking that, say, Javale McGee or Draymond Green brings to the floor for the Warriors. And I think they really adjusted to that and saw, ‘Look, this is where a lot of their shots came from on the floor when they had those drives. This is where we’re going to try to concentrate. This is where we’re going to try to make them take an extra dribble or take a dribble away from those drives so they can’t get to that specific spot and make them uncomfortable.’ I think combined with locking down on 3-point land, that’s really what happened to them.” 18:51-21:22 Despite the defensive shortcomings of Lillard and McCollum, it’s premature to break up the talented duo, according to Dane: “If the Blazers need to do something else, that trade is not coming until summer of 2018. They have to go through an entire season together with a fully built roster that they think is ready to compete with a starting center that works for them, and that would be Jusuf Nurkic, [Al-Farouq] Aminu at the 4, Mo Harkless at the 3. They have to go through a whole season with an actually complete roster with honestly guys defensively who can back them up. Remember this is a team that played with… Nic Batum, Wes Matthews and Robin Lopez, three players that really from different positions helped eliminate some of the deficiencies for those guys…They had to get through this season, figure out what they were doing, they’re going to have to trade [Allen] Crabbe and somebody else, get their real roster together, play a whole other year with it,

The guys explain whether or not they are sold on the Bulls being able to complete the 8th seed upset. The guys talk about the young Bulls stepping up in each of the first two games and who might impact Game 3 on Friday. Robin Lopez has been dominating Boston on the glass, is there any hope for the Celtics to match his performances? Even if the Bulls win this series, what does it all mean for the front office's plan for the summer? Does this sudden click between 'the Three Alphas' bring Wade and Rondo back next season? Jordan believes there is a scenario in which the Bulls pursue notable name superstars in their strive to 'retool, not rebuild'. Speaking of summer, Jordan and Matt finish the show by understanding whether the Bulls will match Nikola Mirotic's offer sheet with another team this summer. How does Mirotic stack up against some of the other leagues underperformed players' contracts? All of this and so much more on The Debate-A-Bulls.

Does his addition make the backcourt duo viable going forward long term and will it be enough to overcome the Warrior's backcourt of Steph Curry and Klay Thompson? - We take a bit of tangent discussing the overall change from "typical lineups" to the evolution of small ball. Does Nurki? offer enough to keep the Warriors from staying in their small all lineups? What kind of player does it take to change the paradigm? - Is Noah Vonleh the small ball big the Blazers have been looking for? Can he show something, or enough of something in this series to prove it one way or the other? - Ben and I break down the overwhelming odds facing the Trail Blazers in their first round match up with the Warriors? What's the most likely scenario and what would be a "good" outcome for Portland, save winning the series? - Moving past the playoffs, we discuss Portland's offseason priorities. What does a successful offseason look like? What can Portland do about their precarious salary situation? - Reviewing Ben's thoughts and ideas about the series and big picture takeaways. What do the Blazers need to see from Damian Lillard? - Can CJ McCollum go from a star player to a superstar? Can he take his game to an even higher level? - What does a successful post season look like for first timer Nurki?? What can he show that will give the Blazers hope heading into the 2017-18 season? - Wrapping things up with something new, NBA on Netflix. Here we've taken some suggestions from others as well as some of our own and suggested remakes of some classic and not so classic films fitting NBA personnel into starring roles! On the NBA Beat Ep. 2.30: Jovan Buha: Clippers “Much Closer to (Dominant) Team From Beginning of Season”

Author: Almighty Baller Radio
Fri, Apr 14, 2017

On this playoff edition, ESPN's Jovan Buha joins us to help preview the Los Angeles Clippers-Utah Jazz matchup, an opening-round series that pits the league's No. 4 offense against the No. 3 defense. The series comes at a pivotal time for the Clippers, who year after year have failed to meet high postseason expectations and will likely see three of their stars enter unrestricted free agency in the offseason. Do the Clippers have a fatal flaw, or have they merely not yet gotten over the hump? Jovan ponders that very question and much, much more. Sample some clip(per)s below: 9:25 - 10:10: Jovan discusses the legitimacy of the Clippers-as-chokers narrative and whether it affects the team:  "It's much easier to say a team choked than provide the context of it. With that said, there really is no other way to frame the Thunder series or the Rockets series. Both series, the Clippers should have won, or the Thunder series at least should have gone to seven. I do think the Clippers choked in both instances, but I don't think that necessarily is their identity, and I don't think necessarily they should be judged that way...I do think that the media narrative has gotten to them a little bit, and I do know that a lot of these guys pay attention to the media more than they let on, and it does seem to bother them more than they admit." 19:20 - 20:29: Our guest dissects the importance of home-court advantage to the Clippers' chances in their first-round playoff matchup with the Utah Jazz: "I think home-court [advantage] is important generally in the playoffs. We can look at the statistics and percentages, it's like 79 percent of the time the home team wins Game 7, so I definitely think it's a factor. What's funny is the Clippers might be one of the few teams where it's not really a factor, because this team...doesn't really have the best home-court advantage...you go to a Clippers game and it's not the loudest crowd. It's not the most active or engaged crowd. This isn't Oracle. This isn't Oklahoma City. This isn't Utah. This isn't Portland...With that said, it's always nice to play at home...I definitely think it's important for them. With that said, they have proven that they can win big games on the road. They did win that Game 7 in Memphis. They won two road games in San Antonio in the Spurs series. " 27:06 - 28:11: Jovan analyzes the tantalizing big man matchup of Rudy Gobert versus DeAndre Jordan down low: "I think that's gonna be a huge matchup. Literally. It's a matchup that DeAndre has tended to do well in, but I think that this season you saw, with the rise of Gobert, we would probably all agree that they're about equal or Rudy's probably a little better, and I think that DJ knows of that perception shift...Rudy is just so big. I think he's probably the second most important player for them, obviously behind Gordon Hayward. That matchup is gonna be really important. I know part of the Clippers' game plan has been to get [Gobert] in foul trouble, and they've been successful with it, but...if Rudy Gobert can get away with certain stuff on the floor, that's a massive advantage for the Jazz." 39:56 - 41:14: Finally, why does Jovan believe that the Clippers might have trouble against the Warriors in a potential Western Conference semifinals clash? "The issue with the Warriors is they're so big on the perimeter and they have so many wing guys that I really think that bothers the Clippers. It's funny: Chris Paul guarded Kevin Durant in the OKC series for like a quarter and shut him down, but you can't ask Chris Paul to do that for a seven-game series. You just look at all the matchups. Klay Thompson's three inches bigger than J.J. Redick. Steph Curry's three inches bigger than Chris Paul. Kevin Durant's three inches bigger than Luc Mbah a Moute. Blake's bigger than Draymond [Green], but Draymond might be stronger than him or as strong as him. Then you go to the bench.

Buzz Beat Ep. 20: Hornets’ Playoff Hopes Dashed

Author: Almighty Baller Radio
Mon, Apr 10, 2017

The Hornets are officially out of the playoffs with their loss to the Boston Celtics. Richie and Spencer breakdown the past three losses to the Wizards, Heat, and Celtics. They discuss the highlights of those games but focus mainly on what's been causing Charlotte issues — defending the three-point line. They question Clifford's inability or unwillingness to adjust on the fly. The crew also discuss some "On/Off Court" stats in reference to Batum, Kaminsky, Kemba, and Zeller. The combo of Batum and Kaminsky has turned out to be disappointing while the Kemba, Zeller combo has been great. The team's offense runs much smoother with those two on the court and they work the pick and roll game to near-perfection. Spencer throws out a name, one that could seem controversial, that he thinks should be in trade talks this offseason. The Buzz Beat co-hosts look to offseason and where their priorities should lie — the draft, free agency, or the trade market. On the NBA Beat Ep. 2.29: Salman Ali: Rockets Enjoying “Perfect Synergy” Throughout Organization

Author: Almighty Baller Radio
Fri, Apr 07, 2017

The Rockets embody one of the best storylines of the 2016-17 season. After badly underwhelming a year ago, the front office adeptly moved around pieces, Mike D’Antoni was brought in to lead the team and James Harden has taken his game to unparalleled heights. As a result, Houston enjoys the league’s third best record. Salman Ali, Managing Editor for Red Nation Hoops and host of the podcast with the same name, visits to discuss all those topics and more including how various role players are thriving and what Houston’s chances are against the rest of the Western Conference’s elite teams. Before the episode blasts off and we journey through the cosmos, you may prepare by scanning some of the highlights below: 0:50-1:26: From Salman’s perspective, just in time for the postseason, Harden is looking more like himself as he recovers from his wrist injury: “I think the Rockets did a good job at sandwiching that rest day to where he’d get a full five days of rest. And let’s be real, that was a rest day. It was listed as a flu, but we kind of know it was because he didn’t want to sit and the Rockets had to say it was a flu day, so I think they did a good job of finding ways to sit him. His shooting stroke looks good. He’s getting to the rim, and he’s not tentative when he gets there, which is a problem that he had last week. And he’s not grimacing after shots, which was a big issue. Through the TV, you could just see that that wrist was bothering him, and now it looks a lot better.” 7:08-8:17: Even before the season, our guest began to notice that Harden was training his focus on the Houston Rockets to an extent he never had before. The adjustment has benefitted the team immensely: “He seems really invested. Obviously, the bigger, high profile thing that Harden did this year is he signed that big extension to stay with the Rockets. To me, that showed a huge commitment to the franchise that may not have been there last season. Let’s be frank. He did not try as hard as he could have last year, and I think that reflected in how poor the Rockets played…he’s treating basketball as his job as opposed to something he’s doing on the side. That’s a really, really important distinction to make. Calvin Watkins of ESPN sat down with Travis Scott. He’s actually a local Houston rapper. He was talking about his opinion of James Harden, and he basically says, ‘James Harden doesn’t even want to go out with me anymore. All he does is he wants to stay inside and play basketball.’" 11:30-13:14: James Harden, Mike D’Antoni and much of the organization have worked together to translate an innovative vision into success, according to Salman: “The hire in Houston of Mike D’Antoni was actually approached with a lot of skepticism at first, which I thought was warranted, right? You have a coach coming off of two miserable stints with the Knicks and the Lakers, and one common cause there is you have a superstar that isn’t willing to adapt to your system whether it be Carmelo Anthony or Kobe Bryant. And I think that’s been the greatest success here in Houston. James Harden is willing to buy into the system. If you remember at the beginning of the system, that shift to point guard was so widely discussed, and it’s worked out really well for the Rockets…I wouldn’t say he has a perfect comparison to Steve Nash, but I think he’s kind of that right blend of a modern-day superstar in terms of scoring and the facilitating of a Steve Nash. And he’s been able to generate like 58 points per game for the Rockets, which is pretty insane…That’s pretty much been the biggest difference. You have a superstar that’s willing to buy in to your system, the role players are willing to buy in, and you have an organization that supports Mike D’Antoni.” 21:12-21:38: Salman reveals what he terms the "insane strategy" the Rockets plan to utilize against the Warriors in the playoffs: "Daryl Morey came out in an interview after they acquired Lou Williams and said,

On the NBA Beat Ep. 2.28: Andy Liu Actually Believes the "Warriors Are Underrated"

Author: Almighty Baller Radio
Fri, Mar 31, 2017

Our favorite Golden State Warriors guest, Andy Liu of Warriors World, is back for a record fourth episode to discuss his team with us. After a brief stumble during which they lost five of seven games when Kevin Durant went down with injury, the Warriors look like they’ve righted the ship. They're currently on a nine-game win streak, including four convincing wins against teams that will make the playoffs in the Western Conference: the Thunder, Grizzlies, Rockets and Spurs. Andy explains how a team that has by far the best Net Rating in the NBA, the best Offensive Rating and the second-best Defensive Rating, could possibly even be underrated heading into the playoffs. Check out these golden excerpts from the episode: 7:22-8:09: Andy explains why he never bought into overreaction that the Warriors were collapsing during the team's recent slump: "Kevin Durant had just gone down, and these guys were really shook up about it, and they had to adjust. In that adjustment period, Steph couldn't hit a shot, the worst slump of his entire career. Klay was going through a slump as well. Draymond Green hadn't shot the ball well all year and still isn't. So they had a lot of issues on that end. They ended up going 2-5, and they played eight games in 13 nights. Since then, they've been great. They've also played a ton of trash teams. And the scheduling is going to get better from here. They've got six of seven at home to end the season…If there was a Finals game today, [Durant] would be playing, but he'll be back in a week and a half or two weeks, so the team is fine again. That's why I was never too worried about it." 13:40-14:23: Next, our guest explores how the Warriors feel about resting their players and whether commissioner Adam Silver's memo on rest has any impact on Kerr's coaching decisions: "Him and Popovich are the greatest at [managing minutes]. If you look at the minutes, Steph, Klay and Dray, those guys average about 33, 34 minutes a game only, and this has been going on for the last two and a half years. He really plays 10, 11 guys no matter what, and he doesn't like to overexert his players...Here's the other thing. They also don't like to rest. Kerr, if he had a choice, would love to, but the players would not allow that, and some of the coaching staff also would like these players to remain in rhythm as well." 21:10-22:45: From the Warriors perspective, Andy is only really concerned about one potential opponent this postseason. He also highlights which Western Conference upstart the Warriors should probably fear within the next couple seasons. "LeBron James, that's about it. Concern. Even though the Cavs aren't playing well right now…Honestly, it would be kind of disappointing to see if it wasn't LeBron [in the Finals]…In terms of matching up with the West teams, that's fun because I think the Jazz are going to be there next year or the year after. I think they're going to be the one that challenges the Warriors, because they replicate the Grizzlies' style the most while adding a little more firepower. The Grizzlies had a 2-1 lead over [the Warriors] a couple years ago. They're able to bang, they're able to hurt the Warriors…You've got the Rockets who want to shoot 3s with the Warriors, which is not happening, so that's an easy win. That's the type of team the Warriors love playing. And then you've got the Clippers, who the Warriors have owned the last couple of years. And then you've got the Spurs, which is obviously the big Bogeyman for the Warriors, who still haven't beaten [the Warriors] in a playoff series." 27:00 - 28:47: Finally, our insider asserts that, despite reaching the NBA Finals in consecutive seasons and breaking the single-season wins mark last season, the Warriors somehow have managed to become underrated again. "I think Draymond's underrated. I think the Warriors are underrated honestly. People just don't understand how great this team's defense is and how great Steph Curry is,

Sun, Mar 26, 2017

Eric Bledsoe, Brandon Knight and Tyson Chandler have already been shut down for the remainder of the Phoenix Suns’ season, but Fox Sports Senior NBA Writer Andrew Lynch isn’t convinced full-on tanking is in the team’s best interest. Andrew’s appearance comes fresh off 20-year-old Devin Booker’s history-making 70-point output in a loss to the Celtics Friday night. He contextualizes Booker’s rare night and breaks down many other integral Suns issues, such as Eric Bledsoe’s projected NBA future, the disappointing Alex Len, rookie Marquese Chriss’ potential and Phoenix’s approach to this June's draft. 2:31-2:57: “In this season, Suns fans needed something like that, I think. And it’s just perfectly fitting – I tweeted this last night – that it came in a loss. All of my favorite Suns memories are in losses. I know people want to maybe belittle the achievement a little because he was taking so many shots, because they were fouling, because they were calling timeouts…70 points is 70 points in an NBA game. Period.” 4:54-5:45: “Last year, Devin Booker looked like this savior-level phenom, the kind of player that Phoenix has needed since Steve Nash’s departure… This year, he’s taken a huge step backward, and I think that’s because there’s a lack of structure around him. Earl Watson is a great guy to get the players playing as hard as possible for him, guys love him, he’s a great locker room guy. And I love all that [but] it doesn’t seem like there’s necessarily a design for how this team improves moving forward as a unit and as individuals. And I hate to say this because it’s one of the worst things you can say about an NBA coach, but it’s borderline just rolling the ball out there and letting them play basketball. “ 6:46-7:00: “[The 76ers’ tanking] very rarely has succeeded, but at least the scaffolding is there to build something larger. With the Suns, you just have a bunch of people running around with hammers and masonry tools going, ‘Hey, this is fun. Bob the Builder. This is fun.’” 10:00-10:41: “[The injury history] is concerning in so much as he’s going to take a step back for sure. He’s not going to be an All-Star-caliber point guard when he’s healthy within the next year or even two maybe, but he uses angles so well. Part of his athleticism is his ability to rub his guy off of a screen at the exact right angle to create the maximum amount of space or to come off of a screen and maybe have his big flip it at the last minute. So he uses that geometry of the game so well, I’m not as concerned about a slip in athleticism with him as I might be with someone like Russell Westbrook…Bledsoe’s a little sharper than that.” 15:38 - 16:32: "When you have those kinds of young players, it comes down to defining roles for guys. Someone like Tyler Ulis has maybe had the best development arc on the Suns this year...Because his role has been defined, because the expectations have been set, he knows what he's supposed to do. He's flourished." 22:25-24:09: "Guys, he is so good…I almost shouted, "my man!" I love Tyler so much...Tyler brings that same leadership dynamic [as P.J. Tucker] even as a young dude. He comes in and he is immediately the guy that everyone in the locker room is looking at...Obviously there’s a ceiling on his capability because of his height…With that said, he is so smart, he is such a fundamental player, he is so good on defense. He doesn't just know where opposing ball handlers want to go with the ball. He knows how they want to get there...His hands aren't in passing lanes; they're in dribbling lanes. I haven’t seen anything like it honestly since going back to Stacey Augmon or Gary Payton...I am not going to put a cap on what I expect out of him, because every time anyone has done that with Tyler Ulis, he's proven them wrong." On the NBA Beat Ep. 2.26: Rest for the Weary in Today's NBA

Author: Almighty Baller Radio
Fri, Mar 24, 2017

Resting healthy starters is not exactly a new phenomenon, as LeBron James recently pointed out; heck, Spurs coach Gregg Popovich has been doing it for more than a decade. However, there hasn't been a time in NBA history where the practice has stirred up such a high level of controversy and discontent. The panel aims to explore the issue from the perspectives of the commissioner, NBA coaches, current and former players and, of course, the fans. Be sure to get your rest in advance of the stretch run (we won't blame you for taking care of yourself), but don't sleep on this episode. Just don't do it. On the NBA Beat Ep. 2.25: Blake Murphy: “Raptors Will Be Measured By What They Do Against Cleveland”

Author: Aaron Fischman, Joshua Jonah Fischman and Loren Lee Chen
Fri, Mar 17, 2017

O Canada! Our home and native land! Blake Murphy, who writes about the Raptors for ESPN TrueHoop’s Raptors Republic and The Athletic among other sites, joins the podcast to share his knowledge on Raptors topics such as how trade deadline acquisitions Serge Ibaka and P.J. Tucker enhance lineup flexibility and the irony of Jonas Valanciunas’ situation in that the better he plays seemingly the less chance he has of sticking around next season. Among other salient team-centric subjects, Murphy addresses how Kyle Lowry could have better handled his controversial wrist injury. Unfortunately, this episode does not come with universal healthcare, but here are some soothing excerpts to help alleviate those pains of yours. Plus, preexisting conditions do not preclude you from enjoying: 4:21-5:09 on Serge Ibaka’s fit with the Raptors: “He’s had a nice positive impact. The 3-point shooting, he’s knocking down 40 percent of his shots on 4.5 looks per game. The best thing for the Raptors is that most of them have been above the break. Normally the Raptors get a lot of corner shooting, especially from their power forward position, but as Ibaka has played some center, he’s given them a nice pop threat, which is a different wrinkle for guys like DeRozan, and when he’s back, Lowry to use. The Raptors defense has been much much better since the trade deadline. They’re seventh in the NBA in Defensive Rating over the last 10 games. That’s not all owing to Ibaka, but he’s been a nice rim-protecting presence…Ibaka’s seeing a lot of time at center and in close games they’re closing with Ibaka [there].” 9:16-10:09 on the injured Kyle Lowry’s importance to the team: “Lowry is the engine of the team. Dwane Casey referred to him as the ‘queen bee’…you look at the things they do offensively, and even though his usage is 10 percentage points lower than DeRozan’s, Kyle Lowry is their best 3-point shooter, so when DeRozan is operating, Lowry is the best floor spacer they have to help DeRozan’s game. Look at their 3-point shooting since he’s gone out. It’s almost all catch-and-shoot. They don’t have any pull-up 3-point threats, and Lowry is one of the best, alongside Stephen Curry, Damian Lillard and Kyrie Irving at pulling up, even from 30 feet, and that’s an element, especially in the transition game, that opponents have to pay attention to…The Raptors are obviously notorious for not moving the ball particularly well. Well, Lowry’s their best playmaker.” 27:16-28:36 on the Raptors’ chances against the Cavaliers in the playoffs: “It’s tough. What we saw last year was that, when Toronto is at its best, they can hang with Cleveland. The two games that the Raptors won in that series and the two they won in the regular season, they played a good game. They ground things down a little bit, they made the game physical, and they matched up with Cleveland well that way. But what we also saw that time was, in the four games Cleveland won, they ran Toronto off the floor. And in the regular season meetings this year, Cleveland didn’t have a ton of trouble with them. That talent gap is obvious there. The fact that Cleveland can spread the floor across all five positions, and the way they’ve killed the Raptors this year is posting LeBron up, forcing the Raptors to send help and zone up behind LeBron, and then LeBron pings passes to shooters all over the floor. You add Kyle Korver to that mix, who wasn’t there when the Raptors last played them, and that’s pretty deadly…The one thing the Raptors are better able to do now is they’re a little more flexible lineup-wise…When the Cavs downsize…The Raptors have that option in Serge Ibaka, where last year they tried Bismack Biyombo in that spot.” 32:41-33:51 on DeMar DeRozan’s stellar efficiency: “He might have the best post footwork now that Kobe is out of the league. What he’s been able to do is, a couple years ago those 20-footers he took became 18-footers, then they became 16-footers,
