Rick Steves' France Audio Tours Podcast

by Rick Steves

Rick Steves' Audio Tours provide history and art commentary while navigating through sprawling museums and historic sites. Rick's audio tours are humorous, insightful, and a third less dry than the audioguides you rent in Europe.

Historic Paris

Author: Rick Steves
Mon, Apr 3, 2006

On this audio tour of Historic Paris, Rick Steves gives his history and art commentary. Orientation: Many sights that charge admission are covered by the Museum Pass, which for many travelers is a great time- and money-saver (1 day-18 euros, 3 consecutive days-36 euros, 5 consecutive days-54 euros, sold at participating sights). The Archaeological Crypt is a convenient, uncrowded place to buy your pass. Notre-Dame: Free, church open daily 7:45-19:00; treasury-2.50 euros (not covered by Museum Pass), daily 9:30-17:30; Sunday Mass at 8:30, 10:00 (Gregorian), 11:30 (international), and 12:45. Organ performances are usually on Sun at 16:30. The tower climb (entrance along left side of church) is 400 steps and costs 7 euros, but it's worth it for the gargoyle's-eye view of the cathedral, Seine, and city (July-Aug Mon-Fri 9:00-19:30, Sat-Sun 9:00-23:00; daily April-June and Sept 9:30-19:30, Oct-March 10:00-17:30, last entry 45 min before closing, covered by Museum Pass but no bypass line for passholders; to avoid crowds in peak season, arrive before 10:00 or after 18:00). For those lucky enough to be here either on Easter or the first Friday of the month (15:00-16:00), Jesus' Crown of Thorns is on display. Paris Archaeological Crypt: 3.50 euros, covered by Museum Pass, Tue-Sun 10:00-18:00, closed Mon, entry 100 yards in front of the cathedral. Deportation Memorial: Free, daily April-Sept 10:00-12:00 & 14:00-19:00, Oct-March 10:00-12:00 & 14:00-17:00. Sainte-Chapelle and Conciergerie: 7 euros each, 10.50 euros combo-ticket for both, both covered by Museum Pass; Sainte-Chapelle daily March-Oct 9:30-18:00, Nov-Feb 9:00-17:00; Conciergerie daily April-Sept 9:30-18:00, Oct-March 10:00-17:00; last entry 30 min before closing for both. Versailles

Author: Rick Steves
Wed, Mar 22, 2006

On this audio tour of the Versailles Palace, Rick Steves gives his history and art commentary. Versailles Palace Orientation: There are several different parts of the palace, each with a separate admission. The State Apartments cost is 7.50 euros, 5.50 euros after 15:30. The gardens are free, except on weekends from April-Sept, when the fountains blast and the price shoots up to 6 euros. Entering the Grand and Petit Trianon Palaces costs 5 euros together. All are covered by Museum Pass. Palace hours are Tues-Sun 9:00-18:30 April-Oct, Tues-Sun 9:00-17:30 Nov-March, closed Mon. Last entry is 30 minutes before closing. The Grand and Petit Trianon Palaces open at noon. The gardens are open daily from 7:00 (8:00 in winter) to sunset (as late as 21:30 or as early as 17:30). In summer, Versailles is especially crowded between 10:00 and 13:00, and all day Tue and Sun. Remember, the peasant mobs gave Marie-Antoinette a pain in the neck, too, so relax and let them eat cake. For fewer crowds, go early or late. Excerpted from Rick Steves' Paris 2006 Copyright 2005, Avalon Travel Publishing Related travel information at www.ricksteves.com
