Bill Bryson
Biography Bill Bryson was born in Des Moines, Iowa, in 1951. He is the best selling author of several humorous and informative books on travel, as well as books on the english language and scientific subjects. While backpacking in England in 1973, Bryson met his wife and settled there. For the next 20 years, he worked in a mental hospital, as a copy editor, as a journalist and finally he became the travel story author we know today. His books have been embraced enthusiastically as funny, well written guides to such disparate locales as Australia, Africa, Europe and the rural Midwest of the U.S. Bryson is also a well regarded writer on the subject of languages, publishing guides on word usage and dictionaries. When it comes to his audio books (most of which he reads himself) be prepared for a great time as Bryson guides you through some of the most interesting places in the world.
We Recommend You may be wondering where the best place to start is with Bill Bryson. One idea is "Notes From A Small Island", a great opportunity to experience Bryson's lightning wit. Before leaving Britain to live in his homeland of the United States again, Bryson insists that he and his family take a final trip across the UK. His aim: to take stock of modern day Britain, and understand why he loves it so much. For a sample of Bryson's work on the subject of science, you should try "A Short History Of Nearly Everything". With this audio book, Bryson starts off knowing nothing about science, but finds his footing and leads listeners in an illumaniting and accessible exploration of modern science. Even the most hardened scientist succumbs to Bryson's affable charm to reveal how he figures things out. For further terrestrial journeys, there's "I'm A Stranger Here Myself" which chronicles Bryson's triumphant return to America and the tours he takes as he tries to acclimate himself to American life after living in England. Whether you are interested in Science, Language or what Australia is like in the summer, Bryson is the perfect guide. LearnOutLoud.com is excited to present everything available by Bill Bryson on audio. We know it will bring you hours of laughs and learning.

A Walk in the Woods (Bantam Doubleday Dell Audio) by Bill Bryson Available on: Audio CD ($23.96) | Audio Cassette | Digital Download
Following his return to America after 20 years in Britain, Bryson decided to reacquaint himself with his native country by walking the 2,100-mile Appalachian Trail, which stretches from Springer Mountain in Georgia to Mount Katahdin in Maine. The AT, as it's affectionately known to thousands of hikers, offers an astonishing landscape of silent forests and sparkling lakes - and to a writer with the comic genius of Bill Bryson, it also provides endless opportunities to test his own powers of ineptitude, and to witness the majestic silliness of his fellow human beings. |

In a Sunburned Country (Bantam Doubleday Dell Audio) by Bill Bryson Available on: Audio CD ($39.96) | Audio Cassette | Digital Download
Australia exists on a vast scale, a shockingly under-discovered country with the friendliest inhabitants, the hottest, driest weather, the most peculiar and lethal wildlife to be found on this planet, and more things that can kill you in extremely malicious ways than anywhere else: sharks, crocodiles, the ten most deadly poisonous snakes on the planet, fluffy yet toxic caterpillars, seashells that actually attack you, and the unbelievable box jellyfish. In a Sunburned Country is a delectably funny, fact-filled and adventurous performance by a writer who combines humor, wonder, and unflagging curiosity. |
