Quebec and the French (1608)

The Rival Empire

While the English were trying to establish their own empire, their French enemies were trying to do the same. Samuel Champlain sailed up the St. Lawrence and founded Quebec, the future Capitol of French Canada. The St. Lawrence was the path into the interior of North America. All that was needed was boldness and the wisdom to make allies of the Indians. While the Algonquins became friends of the French, Champlain managed to provoke the powerful Iroquois. This mistake yielded consequences that undermined the French supremacy-but not before they had the time to invent Detroit.
