Moliére was the son of a successful upholsterer who became a writer and actor in the new prosperous world of the Parisian stage. His power lay in his boldness. He mocked the aristocracy, the clergy and the ambitious bourgeoisie. He was both censured and censored. But he was a favorite of the king who protected him. The philosophy behind his mockery anticipated the Age of Reason.
