It was in the failed Suez Campaign against Nasser in Egypt that the British and the French, aided by the Israelis, were humilated by the Americans and forced to withdraw. President Eisenhower ordered them out of Egypt and confirmed, by his action, the Americans were now in charge. After Suez the British and the French lost their will for empire. 'Europe' would be born to recruit the passions of the generation that would follow.
