Set in Puritan Massachusetts, Hawthorne's greatest novel is a philosophical exploration of sin, guilt, and redemption. Hester Prynne is sentenced to wear the letter A embroidered in scarlet on her breast, as punishment for her adultery. Despite threats from the Boston clergy, she steadfastly refuses to name the father of her child. Hester's husband, an old physician who had remained in Europe, arrives in America to see her on the pillory. Calling himself Roger Chillingworth, he plans revenge, and when he suspects the respected young minister, Arthur Dimmesdale, he uses hints and innuendo to torment him. This incredible study of sin and its effect on the human heart remains a classic without equal in American literature.
