General Content: John Gottman does some very important work in one of the most important areas I can think of: Marriage therapy. According to his research he claims he can determine (with something like 90% accuracy) which couples will be divorced within 10 years. It comes through a concept called "emotional bidding" and that concept lies at the heart of The Relationship Cure.
The concept of emotional bidding is both interesting and potentially revolutionary. I found the first half of the book very interesting as Gottman discussed the impact of "turning towards" versus "turning away from" others in our interpersonal interactions. Indeed, I have become more attuned to my own emotional bidding since listening to Gottman's book.
The second half of the book tends to drag a bit as Gottman offer more general advice on relationships. While some of it was good much of it seemed like common-sense. I do applaud Gottman for his work and overall I would recommend this book to anyone seeking to improve their relationships.
Audio-specific content: I listened to the abridged version of this title (approx. 6 hours) available through Amazon.com. The title was narrated by the author. He did a satisfactory job but I also was not fully engaged by his presentation. The book does tend to "sag" a bit at the end and I wonder if this might have been helped by having a different narrator.
