Siddhartha is the story of an Indian man who sets out on a spiritual quest of discovery. Rejecting conventional spiritual practices and teachings, he attempts to find his own path to enlightenment. In his travels he encounters the Buddha, becomes engulfed in the worldly illusions of Sansara, and eventually finds peace in the oneness of all existence. Through Herman Hesse's simple prose, he elucidates many Buddhist and Hindu ideas on the stages and meaning of life.

I breezed through this audio book, which tells in straight forward language the story of Siddartha. I had assumed it was a fictional retelling of the life of the Buddha. Not so. Siddartha lives at the time of the Buddha but he's more of an every man character who goes through a number of stages in his life before reaching enlightenment. Hesse's language (translated here from German) is very simple and accessible. Many of the concepts of Buddhism and Hinduism are demonstrated in this novel. So it's more of an entertaining way of learning about these religions. The narration here is top notch and it was a very easy listen.
