Before their popular
Joseph Campbell and the Power of Myth
documentary series from 1988, Bill Moyers sat down with mythologist Joseph Campbell in 1981 for a two-part conversation. In this first part, Moyers questions Campbell on the definition of myth and the role that the psyche plays in developing myths across cultures. Campbell also describes the hero's quest and what it involves. Moyers questions Campbell about Christianity in the modern world and its being the one true religion, which Campbell finds incompatible in a global community with many religions. Campbell describes the mythological significance of man landing on the moon in 1969, and the mythic imagery at play in Stanley Kubrick's film
2001: A Space Odyssey
