One of the most important philosophical works of the twentieth century, Being and Time is both a systematization of the existential insights of Kierkegaard and Nietzsche and a radicalization of Husserl's phenomenological account of intentionality. What results is an original interpretation of the human condition leading to an account of the nature and limitations of philosophical and scientific theory. This account has important implications for all those disciplines that study human beings.

I just finished reading through division one of Being and Time (Maquarrie's translation) using Dreyfus's lectures as a supplement, and they're nothing short of wonderful helps for understanding this dense text.

Wonderful teacher

I find that having access to these lectures as podcasts - free of charge - is absolutely remarkable. Heidegger is rather difficult to get into (and teaching, I imagine), but Hubert L. Dreyfus apparently does a most wonderful job at explaining the key points of his arcane work.

A word of advice though.

This is not an introduction to modern western philosophy.
It is for the advanced student, and extensive knowledge of both (that is, reading) Heideggers predecessors and his work is absolutely necessary.
