While the 16th U.S. President has achieved an eternal legacy for the emancipation proclamation, this does not mean that his personal views on race were quite as evolved. Gates explains how over the course of Lincoln's public life people like Frederick Douglass had a galvanizing personal effect on him, leading to Lincoln's later conviction that there was no important difference between the races.
