In this episode of On Being, host Krista Tippett interviews Vietnamese Buddhist monk Thich Nhat Hanh about his ideas on mindfulness and their application towards creating compassion and peace. Hanh became known during for his opposition to the Vietnam War in the 1960s and he influenced Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. to speak out against the war in 1967. Hanh was exiled from his country for nearly 40 years and lived in France where he gave countless talks and published 130 books.

In this interview Krista Tippett caught up with Hanh in Wisconsin where he was leading a mindfulness retreat for law enforcement officers. Hanh emphasizes that he changes his teaching in an attempt to meet the particular suffering a group might be facing. The law enforcement officer who organized the retreat talks with Tippett about how mindfulness training had helped her confront difficult situations as a police officer. Through compassion and communication Hanh stresses that peace can be achieved in most situations whether between individuals, groups, or nations.
