Description

James D. Watson, Nobel Laureate and Chancellor of Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, describes the years leading up to his 1953 discovery of the structure of DNA, for which he won the Nobel Prize with Drs. Francis Crick and Maurice Wilkins (1962). Dr. Watson explains that the key to uncovering the causes of brain disorders such as schizophrenia, depression, fragile X syndrome, Alzheimers, etc. is in our genes. He depicts the strides being made by scientists at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, a research institution in the biological sciences, as they search to find the genetic basis of neurological disorders. CSHL scientists' seach to root out disease genes related to mental illnesses, such as schizophrenia and autism and devise strategies for treating a variety of neurological disorders will be discussed.

Brain Mysteries

The brain is one of the most difficult organ for scientists to decipher. Therefore, brain disorders too, posed a mystery to the medical world as there had been little knowledge about most of the functioning of the brain. But, with the advent of DNA technology introduced by Dr. James Watson in 1953 many of these questions were answered. According to the DNA theory, most of the characteristics a specie enjoys, are embedded in the form of genetic information in their DNA. Not only this DNA provides genetic material, it also remains a key to explore brain disorders such as Alzheimer’s, Schizophrenia etc. Over the past few decades, a lot of research has been focused on understanding the basics of these disorders in order to attempt a solution. The video talks about strides taken up in this direction and the future prospects.
