But having a life often gets in the way of eating right. That's where the hundred easy-to-prepare recipes in The 20/30 Fat and Fiber Plan come in, including Southwestern Bean Dip, Extra Quick Chili, and Sicilian Minestrone. Few recipes require more than 10 ingredients, and most can be made in less than half an hour. More than 100 pages of fat and fiber counts for thousands of foods, including take-out and brand-name items, make it easy to follow the plan while eating on the run.

The 20/30 Fat and Fiber Plan recognizes that humans are, after all, fallible, so you're allowed to "cheat" on the diet. "The 19 Meals Rule" says that each week, if you follow the plan for 19 meals, you can eat whatever you want for 2 meals. While the authors say not to stuff yourself, this does make the 20/30 plan one you can follow even while eating out. They also avoid the a word (aerobics) and give guidelines for playing away excess weight.

Hallelujah, a sensible weight-loss plan that improves your health, rather than endangering it like so many diet fads of late!

General Content – This book stresses the importance of boosting fiber in the diet while reducing fat. It backs up this theory with lots of evidence of the benefits of a high fiber/low fat diet. I definitely agree with the book’s theories on fiber. However, I feel that the “fat is bad” mantra is not entirely correct. Although the book alludes to the importance of getting enough essential fatty acids, there really isn’t much discussion of this to counter the amount of discussing about reducing overall fat. I feel this could be harmful to the average reader as they may cut good fat out of their diet along with the bad fat.

The author’s section on exercise was pretty lackluster. He didn’t really propose anything any more revolutionary than referring to exercise as “play”. While the book was scientifically sound there are really only a few main points here and a lot of repetition.

Audio-Specific Content – I listened to the abridged (one cassette) version of this book. It was somewhat of a relief that this book was abridged because there aren’t a lot of points made by the author. You can essentially sum up his recommendations by saying “eat more fiber, eat less fat, exercise more.” Therefore the fact that it didn’t carry on more than an hour was nice. The book was read by one of the authors (Gabe Mirkin) and while his voice was decent, it was a bit annoying in places.
