Description

Dr. Andrew Weil, a familiar, bearded presence on PBS, presents his plan to "integrate body, mind, and spirit into a complete and balanced lifestyle" in this lecture filmed before an attentive audience. Weil begins by talking about how a "quality of resilience" can be developed to prevent the body from "being knocked out of balance." According to Weil, the human body has a natural healing system, and a person can take specific steps to support "natural healing." Though some of Weil's ideas may seem odd on the printed page, his presentation of his theory of "integrated medicine" is pleasant and engaging, and he offers a number of analogies and examples of therapies found throughout the world. Given his background in traditional medicine, including a degree from Harvard Medical School, Weil doesn't exclude traditional treatments, though he stresses constantly that "lifestyle choices" can prevent serious illnesses. Proceeding through a series of weekly lessons, Weil gives advice about physical exercise (citing, for example, an amount of daily walking one should do), diet (recommending specific organic foods and supplements), and "mental-spiritual" advice (such as meditative breathing exercises). A second feature on the DVD, Spontaneous Healing, consists of further lectures on how the body's natural defenses can be maximized to provide a better quality of life.

General Content: Dr. Andrew Weil is a leading promoter of “integrative medicine”, the synergy between traditional medicine and natural, homeopathic medicine. In this DVD, he covers two subjects. The first is a step-by-step plan for improving one’s health over an 8 week period of time. By making gradual changes to diet, exercise and emotional and spiritual practices, an individual can greatly reduce the likelihood of getting ill. Dr. Weil presents everything in an easy-to-digest fashion and makes being healthy seem much less menacing than many of his peers.

In the second part of this DVD, Weil covers “spontaneous healing” which is defined as the ability of all individuals to allow the healing mechanisms of the body. He talks about the seven characteristics of individuals who have historically been the most likely to cure themselves of disease. He also offers a stinging indictment of the conventional medical community for their inability to understand the role of nutrition, exercise and the mind-body connection on health.

In my opinion, Andrew Weil offers one of the most sensible (if not the most sensible) viewpoints towards health and wellness. After listening to him you are left with the very strong conviction that if most people followed his health guidelines, there would be a lot less sickness and disease in the world. The best part about Weil’s recommendations is that they are not really all that radical. Once you adopt the changes you really begin to enjoy them and have a lot of difficulty imaging what life was like before.

Video-Specific Content: I watched this title on DVD (1 disc, approx. 120 minutes, rented from Netflix). The video was well produced and although there wasn’t really anything on the DVD that you needed to “see”, Weil is an engaging speaker. Picking up this DVD in conjunction with one of Weil’s many great books would be an excellent combination.
