The opioid crisis is out of control in the United States with over 64,000 deaths from drug overdoses driven by opioids and heroin in 2016. Drug overdose is now the most common cause of death for people under 50 years old in the U.S., outranking car accidents, AIDs, or gun-related deaths. In this new free lecture from The Great Courses, Professor Thad Polk, Ph.D. explains the different types of opioids and how they interact with the brain's dopamine system often leading to addiction. At the end of the lecture he goes over some of the leading treatment methods for opioid and heroin addiction and how effective these treatments are, and also how we can otherwise treat chronic pain so we never have to prescribe opioids in the first place. This lecture was recorded separately from Dr. Polk's course The Addictive Brain that outlines the neuroscience of addiction in 12 lectures covering addiction to different types of drugs along with other addictions like gambling. This lecture and over 300 other courses can be accessed with a subscription to Wondrium.
