Description

The 1936 U.S. Resettlement Administration documentary The Plow That Broke the Plains tells the history of the great plains region from the 1880s to the Dust Bowl of the early 1930s in order to spotlight New Deal programs. In 1999 the film was selected by the Library of Congress for preservation by the National Film Registry because it is "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant". Directed by Pare Lorenz, this was the first film that the U.S. government produced for commercial release and distribution.
