Listen to 200 Free Audible Audiobooks Without a Subscription

We’ve been subscribers to Audible for over 15 years and have never known them to give free audiobooks away to non-members. But in the past year, they have done just that, now offering over 200 of their professionally narrated audiobooks absolutely free! All that is needed is an Amazon.com account and you can start listening for free on Amazon.com, Audible.com, or on the Audible app. Below, we’ll list all 200 of their free audiobooks we now feature in our Free Audiobooks Section (which now has over 4,000 free audiobooks). We’ll link to Amazon.com, where you can listen to them for free. If you use Audible.com, you can browse most of these free audiobooks at this link:

Free Audiobooks on Audible

This page doesn’t have all of their free audiobooks though. We had to dig a little deeper to find even more free audiobooks in their catalog for you. Along with many unabridged classic literature audiobooks, their free offerings include some contemporary Audible Original audiobooks. These contemporary audiobooks include their excellent Words and Music series featuring top musicians talking about their careers and playing music. Below, we’ll list the contemporary audiobooks first, followed by over 150 free classic audiobooks of some of the greatest literature of all time.

Another thing we wanted to mention is that these free audiobooks allow you to listen immediately through their web players on Audible.com or Amazon.com. But you can also add these audiobooks to your Amazon/Audible library and listen to them on the Audible mobile app. That is probably the best option for listening as the app will automatically bookmark where you left off on the audiobook and will also allow you to utilize all the navigation options from Audible’s user-friendly mobile app. In the Audible app you’ll also be able to download the audiobook to your mobile phone for offline listening.

One last thing we wanted to emphasize is that if you see an audiobook here you like, then listen to it as soon as possible. In all of our years running LearnOutLoud.com, we’ve seen thousands of free audiobooks come and go, and there’s no telling if Audible will keep these generous offerings free forever. Seize the day and listen away!

We’ll start with this list of about 20 contemporary audiobooks that Audible offers for free:

Academic Ableism: Disability and Higher Education by Jay T. Dolmage

The Big Store: Inside the Crisis and Revolution at Sears by Donald Katz

Next, we’ll highlight 25 of their free audiobooks from their superb Words and Music series. And lastly, in this blog post, we’ll feature over 150 free works of classic literature that Audible offers. Many of these free audiobooks were by the publisher AudioGO (formerly BBC Audiobooks) that Audible must’ve acquired the rights to distribute. They are outstanding professional narrations, which are almost all unabridged recordings. Add them all to your library, and you’ll have a very nice collection of audiobook classics! Spotify Now Offers 200,000 Audio Books to Premium Listeners

If you’re in the United States and a Spotify Premium member, then update your Spotify app! We knew it was coming, and Spotify has rolled out its offering of 200,000 audio books included in its Premium membership. Starting today, you can listen to 15 hours per month of audio books as a Spotify Premium member at no additional cost (plenty of monthly listening time for most audio books listeners). This premium audio book catalog access was already rolled out in the UK and Australia last month for about 150,000 titles in those countries. Here’s the USA Spotify Premium Audio Book Announcement.

This makes Spotify Premium even more appealing for audio junkies who already use it for music and podcasts. Apple made it a pain for Spotify to sell audio books through their iPhone iOS app, so Spotify decided instead to give audio books away and pay publishers royalties based on streams just like they do for music. It’s an interesting model that has worked for Scribd, which offered a large catalog of streaming audio books that we subscribed to for many years. Scribd was referred to as “the Netflix for books.” But I guess Spotify is now the Netflix for audio books at least! Scribd has recently pivoted and rebranded its ebooks and audio books business as Everand for $11.99/month.

It will be interesting to see what Amazon’s Audible now does in response to Spotify’s new audio book program. Audible does offer about 50,000 audio books to members with unlimited access in their Plus Catalog. Many of the titles in the Plus Catalog are exclusive to Audible, and you can get access to the Audible Plus Catalog for $7.95 per month currently with a 30-day free trial. And then there is the Audible Premium Plus Subscription that gets you a free audio book with a 30-day free trial and is $14.95 per month after that. The Premium Plus subscription is the one-audio-book-credit-per-month model that Audible users have become accustomed to, which gives you one credit to purchase one of over 500,000 titles they offer each month. Audible has been publishing like crazy for years and many of their audio books are exclusive.

But a catalog of 200,000 audio books ready to stream from Spotify is very impressive. At $10.99 per month for Spotify Premium you get 100 million music tracks, 5 million podcasts, and now 200,000 audio books. Sounds like a good deal! We’ve been adding audio books we want to listen to into our Spotify library all day.

The user experience for audio books on Spotify is pretty straightforward and easy to use. Audio books are broken up into chapters or tracks. While the audio books sometimes include the chapter names, they often just list the chapter or track numbers. When you pause an audio book in your Spotify library, you can always hit play and pick up where you left off. And you can download the audio books for offline listening.

They have audio books from most of the major publishers, including the following ones. I’ll just link to the publisher pages on our site to show what they have to offer as there is no way to link to publishers directly on Spotify.

Penguin Random House Audio which includes both Random House Audio and Penguin Audio
Simon & Schuster Audio
Harper Audio
Hachette Audio
Christian Audio
Tantor Audio
Recorded Books which includes the Modern Scholar Courses
Highbridge Audio
Nightingale-Conant
Oasis Audio
Better Listen
Gildan Media
New World Library
Thomas Nelson Word
Phoenix Audio
Zondervan

And there are many, many smaller publishers that are also included in the Spotify Premium catalog. Note that not all the audio books from these publishers are available to stream with the Spotify Premium membership. Some of the authors probably elected to opt-out.

Notable exceptions of publishers whose audio books are NOT available to stream through the Spotify Premium subscription currently include the following publishers. Their audio books might either not be on Spotify at all, or they are listed on Spotify but are locked and must be purchased individually through Spotify.com:

-Macmillan Audio
-Blackstone Audio (Many of their titles are available in the Audible Plus Catalog)
-Sounds True
-Hay House
-The Great Courses
-Brilliance Audio (they’re owned by Audible so that makes sense)
-Pimsleur Language Learning Programs
-Naxos Audiobooks

And, of course, nothing published directly by Audible is on Spotify Premium! Well, this is bound to shake up the audio book industry, and we’ll see what the results are. As for now, we’re staying subscribed to both Spotify and Audible for the best of both worlds and a truly impressive collection of hundreds of thousands of audio books to choose from.

If you aren’t a Spotify Premium member or aren’t in the USA, UK, or Australia and can’t yet access this new audio book program, then you might want to check out our Spotify playlist of over 1,000 of the Best Free Audio Books on Spotify that are available to stream whether you’re a Spotify member or not:

We’ve browsed around for a few hours and noticed that most of the titles are ones published directly by Audible.com or they’re published by the large independent audiobook publisher Blackstone Audio, which appears to have offered up a hefty portion of their audiobooks on Audible Plus. I’m sure the Audible Plus catalog will change and expand over time, but it’s already very impressive!

Audible Plus is eventually going to be offered as a stand-alone subscription service for $7.95/month. But you won’t get your monthly audio book credit if you’re subscribed to only Audible Plus. And that monthly Audible credit can be applied to the hundreds of thousands of audiobooks available on Audible. If you want to dive into Audible Plus, sign up for a free Audible trial today:

Unlimited Audiobooks Subscription from Scribd

scribdunlimitedaudioboks.jpeg

I’ve had a little bit of a revelation recently. That revelation being unlimited audiobooks services! Like many fans of audio books I’ve been a subscriber to Audible.com for years, getting my one credit per month for $14.95 and amassing a sizable library of audio books over the past decade.

Earlier this year the popular e-book and audiobook subscription service Scribd opened up their subscription service to offer unlimited e-books and audiobooks for $8.99/month after a 30 day free trial. I was skeptical of the selection I could get, but then I started browsing around. On Scribd you can browse around without having to create an account or log in to see the different audio books they have to offer. It’s easier to browse their offerings on a desktop or laptop computer, but you can also browse on a mobile phone. And you can search for specific audio books on their site as well, sorting results by “Everything” or just “Books” or “Audiobooks”. I decided to subscribe and after subscribing I’ve now got unlimited access to 90,000 audio books and 900,000 eBooks! Check it out for yourself:

Browse and Get Access to 90,000 Audio Books on Scribd

Scribd works with almost all the major audio book publishers amounting to over 50,000 titles from the following publishers:

Penguin Random House Audio (9600 Titles)
HarperAudio (4200 Titles)
Simon & Schuster Audio (2800 Titles)
Hachette Audio (1600 Titles)
Macmillan Audio (700 Titles)
Tantor Audio (9500 Titles)
Recorded Books (9000 Titles)
Brilliance Audio (8100 Titles)
Christian Audio (1800 Titles)
Oasis Audio (1600 Titles)
Zondervan Audio (1600 Titles)
Highbridge Audio (1400 Titles)
Naxos Audiobooks (800 Titles)
Thomas Nelson Audio (500 Titles)
Listen & Live Audio (500 Titles)
Gildan Audio (400 Titles)
L.A. Theatre Works (300 Titles)
Made for Success Audio (300 Titles)
Audio Holdings (300 Titles)
Better Listen Audio (200 Titles)
Penton Overseas Audio (130 Titles)
New World Library (40 Titles)
Berlitz Audio (30 Titles)

Once I had joined and was into my Scribd account, I started browsing the categories of the site. I began adding dozens of audio books to my saved library, and it was a bit like the first time I added streaming movies to my Netflix queue or starting listening to any album I wanted to on a streaming music service like Spotify. I wasn’t just creating a wish list of audio books I would someday like to buy, but I was making a list of audio books that I could access and listen to as much (or as little) as I wanted to immediately! And that’s what I’ve been doing since I subscribed last month. I’ve been trying out new releases along with audio books that used to be in my Audible Wish List, and I’ve also listened to titles that I might’ve never have purchased on Audible.

When it came to listening, I found the Scribd app on iOS to be very user friendly and assume that Android is the same experience. The titles are divided up by chapters and the app bookmarks your place wherever you’ve left off listening on your desktop or mobile app. On your phone you can stream audio books over your mobile network or download them on a WiFi connection for offline listening. The app specifies how large the files are for storing on your phone.

While I’m still an Audible.com subscriber since it has the largest selection of audio books at about 180,000 with many titles I can only get there, I’ve been impressed by Scribd’s selection of 90,000 audio books. Some publishers not currently offered on Scribd include Blackstone Audio, Nightingale-Conant, Pimsleur, Phoenix Audio, Sounds True, The Great Courses, Hay House, AudioGO, and, of course, they don’t have the titles published exclusively by Audible Studios (which includes about 30,000 audio books).

After looking around I discovered Scribd is not the only unlimited audiobooks subscription service currently. Here are a few others:

Playster.com – Has 100,000+ audiobooks available unlimited for $14.95/month. They have apps for iOS and Android, but their app is not as well reviewed as Scribd.

Otto Radio – I think they started as a radio and podcast app on iOS, but now have 55,000 audio books with two plans:
– Otto Select is $9.99 a month for unlimited access to 20,000+ Audio books.
– Otto Premium is $14.99 a month for everything included in the Select plan, plus one premium audio book per month.

And if you’re looking for more a la carte options or one audio book per month subscriptions then you can try these:

Audible Free Trial Offer:
Get your first 30 days of the Audible membership plan free, which includes two free audiobook credits. After your 30 day trial, your membership will renew each month for just $14.95 per month so you can continue to receive one audiobook credit per month plus members-only discounts on all audio purchases. 180,000 Audio Books available!

Downpour Audio Books – Owned by our friends at Blackstone Audio, members get 1 Credit per month for $12.99 per month along with saving up to 70% off retail prices for members.

Kobo Audio Books – The popular eBook platform also features one audio book per month for $9.99/month.

Audiobooks.com – Offers an impressive 100,000 audio books with a free book and trial before it is $14.95 for one audio book per month.

Google Play Audiobooks – And with the growth in the audio book market, Google decided it was their turn to jump in, offering no subscriptions, but audio books for sale a la carte at discounts. They launched in January with audio books in their Google Play Books app for both Android and iOS.

LearnOutLoud.com Audiobooks for Sale – And we offer 10,000 educational and inspirational audio books to download or stream on MP3 audio.

You can also purchase audio books through Amazon.com (which owns Audible) and iTunes (which Audible distributes to). There is also the ability to get audio books through libraries with Hoopla and Overdrive. Many options, but we recommend trying:
