The greatest century of Greek culture was the fifth century B.C. It is the century of the Persian Wars and the amazing victory of the Greeks over a formidable empire. It is the century of Athenian glory with the Parthenon and Pericles. It is the century of Greek drama with the wondrous productions of Aeschylus, Sophocles and Euripides. It was Euripides who was the greatest of the dramatists. His voice is more secular and his heroes are more human.
