The Great Gatsby

The Great Gatsby

by F. Scott Fitzgerald

Hear Sample Windows Media Player

Feel the texture of Fitzgerald's language as master reader Alexander Scourby, with cool precision, unfolds the mystery of Jay Gatsby.

A true classic of American literature, The Great Gatsby celebrates a "heightened sensibility to the promises of life," an American capacity for hope that remains unsullied even by the falsity of what it pursues. Fitzgerald's clean, elegant style evokes to perfection the glitter and charm of the Jazz Age, as well as the falseness of its values.

Gatsby embodies the naive American notion that it is possible to invent oneself and persuade the world to accept that definition. Gatsby's youthful neighbor, Nick Carraway, fascinated by both the display of enormous wealth and the essential integrity that he perceives in Gatsby's vision, becomes his confidante and accomplice in his plan to recapture the heart of Daisy Buchanan.

Classic narration of a classic book, February 17, 2006
Reviewer: learnoutloud from Los Angeles, California

The Great Gatsby is easily a classic, but its reading by Alexander Scourby makes it a five star audio book. Scourby captures all the wit and insight that Fitzgerald has created through the voice of Nick Carraway, making the observations and descriptions very vivid in the listener's mind. This book demands a strong voice and skilled actor Scourby fully embodies the main character telling us the story of Jay Gatsby.

For those who've never read it, The Great Gatsby is marvelous. It's a fresh and fun portrait of the roaring 20s in New York and it's not really that dated. The writing is thoroughly modern and Gatsby's attempt to realize his dreams through popularity and material wealth are still very much with us today. This unabridged version is as good an audio edition of The Great Gatsby as one could hope for.
