Hegemony or Survival

Hegemony or Survival

America's Quest for Global Dominance

by Noam Chomsky

For more than half a century, the United States has been pursuing a grand imperial strategy with the aim of staking out the globe. Our leaders have shown themselves willing, as in the Cuban missile crisis, to follow the dream of dominance no matter how high the risks. Now the Bush administration is intensifying this process, driving us toward the final frontiers of imperial control, toward a choice between the prerogatives of power and a livable Earth. Noam Chomsky investigates how we came to this moment, what kind of peril we find ourselves in and why our rulers are willing to jeopardize the future of our species.

Lucid, rigorous and thoroughly documented, Hegemony or Survival is Chomsky's most urgent and sweeping work in years. Certain to spark widespread debate, it is a definitive statement from one of the world's most influential political thinkers.

Introduction read by Noam Chomsky.

If Noam Chomsky wasn’t so educated in world affairs, his projections about the future of the American Empire might seem like conspiracy theory. But his vast knowledge of the military history of the U.S. since the end of World War II show how critical of a time this is for foreign policy and how scary it may quickly turn if the U.S. continues it’s unilateral approach of aggression toward “perceived threats” throughout the world. From our state-sponsored terrorism strikes throughout the 1980s in Latin America to the military aid of tyrannical regimes around the globe, Chomsky deconstructs the notion of America as an innocent and enlightened nation which attacks only in the name of defense and democracy. Chomsky’s rhetoric is effective and intelligent as he emphasizes the need for America to see its own standards of military action through the eyes of the rest of the world and comprehend how biased we are. Chomsky does see a counterpart to America’s Imperial Grand Strategy through the power of world opinion which has recently opposed the U.S., particularly in regards to the war with Iraq. Brian Jone’s intense narration brings forth the intelligence of Chomsky, but not Chomsky’s rye, wise voice which provides the recent and little known violent history of the American military as something he’s been following closely for decades.
