How to Practice

How to Practice

The Way to a Meaningful Life

by His Holiness the Dalai Lama

As human beings, we possess one common desire: the need for happiness and a meaningful life. According to His Holiness the Dalai Lama, the ability to find true fulfillment lies within each of us. Now, the spiritual and temporal leader of Tibet, Nobel Prize winner, and best selling author helps listeners begin the path to enlightenment in a very special audiobook - an easy-access reference for daily practice as well as a stunning new illumination of the timeless wisdom of His Holiness.

How to Practice will guide you toward nurturing compassion, refraining from doing harm, maintaining mental tranquility, and how to develop wisdom. Divided into a series of distinct steps that will lead spiritual seekers of all faiths toward enlightenment, this accessible audiobook is a constant and daily companion in the quest to practice morality, meditation, and wisdom. The Dalai Lama shows us how to overcome our everyday obstacles, from feelings of anger and mistrust to jealousy, insecurity, and counterproductive thinking. Imbued with His Holiness' vivacious spirit and sense of playfulness, How to Practice offers the Dalai Lama's own sage and practical insight into the human psyche and what binds us all together.

Translated and Edited by Jeffrey Hopkins, Ph.D.

Write a Review of How to Practice

LOLJPB, February 17, 2006
Reviewer: LOLJPB

General Content: I’ve always enjoyed the writings and teachings of the Dalai Lama. His ideology of compassion towards one’s enemies and love for all creatures of the Earth is an admirable one that we should all aspire to. However, while I don’t find any fault in his words, this book was not among my favorites from him. I think part of this was reflected in the fact that the book seemed geared more towards those looking to practice Buddhism, rather than the layperson simply looking for a way to apply Buddhist principles to daily life. I felt that his previous books such as The Art of Happiness did a better job of this.

Having said that, I don’t feel that the Dalai Lama needs to (or perhaps even should) appeal to a Western audience. The fact that his teachings do appeal to many in the West is indicative, I believe, of a growing dissatisfaction with materialism and a longing to return to a simpler life. These were points that are made throughout the Dalai Lama’s teachings. My only concern would be that his teaching becomes “pop culturalized” by editors, publishers, etc. in an attempt to make them more accessible to those less familiar with the Tibetan way of life. So if the trade-off is that this book has more of a religious feel and less practical applications to life, then perhaps it’s not a bad trade-off at all.

For those looking for a deeper insight into Buddhism and practices of contemplation and meditation that can make life more meaningful, this book might be quite enjoyable. It’s not “Zen for Dummies” but in the end, I think that’s a very, very good thing.

Audio-Specific Content: I listened to the unabridged (5.5 hours in length) version of this title through Audible.com. It is narrated by Jeffrey Hopkins. One of my reasons for a lower rating of this title was that I didn’t find this title to be highly listenable. I’m not 100% sure why. Probably a combination of the content and the narration. This is perhaps one of those titles that might be a better book than it is an audiobook.
